บท 34: Part XXXIV
"Shall we begin." Sean's voice, calm but thick and powerful sends a shiver down my spine.
"How have you been faring Sean?" The man beside me breaks the awkward silence.
"Very well, thank you. Now, to the matter of the day." Sean responds curtly.
"For how long are we going to have humans meddle?" Miranda speaks, sounding a little less surprised and angry than before. Looks like she expected me this time.
"She's not meddling if it's her business too Miranda." He responds sternly.
"Yes yes," the young man speaks, "so what's the plan?"
"The wedding. The ritual. Then the coronation." Sean says, "three steps we're yet to take but have to take."
"And who's the bride?" Aiden says finally and my heart beat quickens along with sweat forming on my palms which I rub together, "is it this sick and defiled looking human?." Sean tightens his fists so strong under the table, his veins making strong evident lines on his arms but he stays silent, allowing him finish. "I will not stand by and watch while our kingdom is ruined into shards. I will not allow it."
"Adrian you should not speak in such manner." The man beside me says. I knew I was getting his name wrong all the while. It's Adrian and not Aiden.
"Let him Joe." Sean says before Adrian could respond to the man sitting beside me which I now know to be Joe. Funny how he reminds me of my dad. My dad's name is Joe.
"He is allowed to speak up his mind," Sean continues, "that's why this is a meeting."
"Finally we agree on something." Adrian says.
"If it is the ruin of the kingdom that's your fear, I assure it won't be because of her." Sean responds.
"That's the same thing she said." Adrian responds with bitterness and pure anger, "she said the same thing and we believed her. We trusted a human and that has been our biggest mistake till date!. We were silent because we respected her decisions. We were silent because we were ignorant. We were silent! But not anymore. There'll be no more jeopardy, not because of a human and definitely not because of your family again!"
"ADRIAN!." Joe yells and hits the table with both hands, "what has come over you!"
"Nothing has come over me father!" Adrian yells equally, "I just have the guts to say out what we all have in our minds. I have the balls to speak up for the multitude of you cowards!"
"You will not insult me." Joe says angrily, threateningly.
"No I won't. I dare not. But I will not be silenced."
"Sean," Joe turns to him and says in a calm tone. "Can I speak with you?"
"Sure." Sean says looking at him.
"Alone." Joe says and my heart sank in my stomach. Please say no Sean. I can't imagine being left alone with all these strange people who have nothing but hate for me. Whether I accept it or not, Sean is the only form of protection I have. Please say no. Please.
"Fine." One word that weighs so much and feels like a heavy yoke has been put around my shoulders. Immediately they both disappear and I suddenly feel naked, exposed. Like a deer in the midst of wolves. Few seconds pass and I stay frozen in my sit with my head bowed, praying deeply in my head that I'm invincible and Sean gets back soon.
"You." Miranda says sending my prayers down the drain. I stay put, not daring to respond nor raise my head.
"Look at me when I speak to you human." She says again and slowly, I raise my head up in fear of what she might do if I disobey. She looks at me obviously irritated by what she sees, with a frown on her flawless forehead and her pink lips upturned in disgust.
"You want to be queen?" She asks me and I look down in fear and shame. Ofcourse not. Queen of a kingdom I know nothing about? I have never dreamt to be a queen nor princess, not even a president's wife or a person of such significance. I've only ever wanted a simple life with a husband and two kids. That's the only thing I asked for.
"Are you dumb?" She asks mockingly and little laughters come from the others at the table, except Adrian. "So Sean's giving us a dumb human for a queen. How convenient!"
"Do you even love him?" She asks again and the way she said it, I can tell there's more to that question. I guess even if I did which I never would, I'd never love him the way she does. She wants to be queen.
"Do you?" She asks again but I stay silent, any form of answer evading me completely and my my brain stays blank. Only pleading for a quick return of Sean.
"You're weak. Frail. I could break you with a simple snap of my fingers," Miranda says to me and I look back down to my former position quickly, as the tears that's been threatening to spill finally does. "I have been here for years before you and I will not lose to you. I swear I will do anything to rid Sean of you. You will never be queen." Her threats only make me even more scared and I wanna just run and hide in Dylan's arms like I always did. I never asked for any of this. I don't want any of this. I got caught up in Dylan's family problems, I can't be caught up in some mysterious kingdom issues again! I can't and won't take it. I just want peace. I want to rest. I want to breathe a breath of fresh air!
"Are you okay?" Sean says touching my arm and I jump in my skin. He frowns at me and I look back down immediately, trying to hide tears and fears. He mustn't know what just happened. I nod my head slightly and he withdraws his arms.
"I have chosen who to marry." Sean says and I so earnestly desire to hear Miranda's name come next. "And my choice hasn't deviated from the initial. Only there's a condition." The whole room goes silent and I can hear my own heart thudding against my ribcage, like prisoners screaming to be released.
"Fate has to choose."
