บท 4: Impossible

Lying in my own pool of blood, I lifted my arm to feel the wound on my shoulder. My fingers carefully traced the edges of the torn flesh, eliciting a hiss of pain from my lips.

"..."

I groaned in despair, the reality of my situation finally sinking in...

I will die here, alone in this forest, without anyone ever knowing what happened to me.

One moment I was enjoying my favorite novel and the next, I was transported to this strange and dangerous place.

How is that even possible?!

Observing my surroundings, I noticed that the forest was unfamiliar, like nothing I had ever seen before.

The trees were twisted and gnarled, their trunks and branches covered in thorny vines and patches of moss.

It looked like a place from a fairy tale - dark and nightmarish, with no clear path or direction to follow.

"What is happening..."

I whispered to myself, my voice hollow and weak as I struggled to remain conscious.

Every breath was becoming a laborious task, my chest heaving with the effort. As darkness crept in at the corners of my vision, I tried to hold on a little longer, desperately trying not to close my eyes for fear of never opening them again.

'I don't want to die...'

My thoughts trailed off as the world faded to black, and I surrendered to the void of unconsciousness.

***

As I slowly opened my eyes, I realized I was no longer in the forest...

I was in the same meadow where I was transported beforehand, surrounded by the warm sunshine and the gentle breeze.

"What the hell!?"

Instantly I jumped to my feet, my heart racing with confusion as I tried to make sense of what just happened.

Tap... Tap...

Observing my body, I also noticed that the wounds on my shoulder and back were gone, as if they never existed.

Was it all just a dream?

Krank... Krank...

I felt my entire body tremble with fear as I heard a croak and turned around to see a large, black Raven perched on a nearby branch, watching me with its beady eyes.

Instinctively, I stumbled backward, my eyes widening in terror.

"How are you not dead?!"

I yelled at the Raven, my voice shaking with anger and fear.

However, the bird simply cocked its head to the side, as if amused by my outburst and hopped off its perch, flapping its enormous wings to soften the landing.

"No! Get away!"

I screamed as I started running in the opposite direction, jumping over the skeleton lying barely visible in the grass.

As I sprinted, my mind raced with questions and disbelief, meanwhile, the Raven took off into the air and soared above me, its wingspan larger than any bird I had ever seen before.

'How is it still alive?!'

I cursed to myself, I could clearly remember crushing its head with a rock just moments ago...

There was no way this could be real!

Swish...

I heard the sound of something cutting through the air, and before I could react, a sharp pain erupted in my side as the bird's claws dug into my flesh, piercing through my skin and muscle.

The intense pain caused me to stumble and fall to the ground, my body convulsing with shock and agony as blood started pouring out of the wound.

Thud...

My head hit the ground hard, and my vision blurred as I struggled to stay conscious, however, I managed to somehow scare the Raven off with a wild swing of my arm that connected with its beak, causing its head to jerk backward in surprise.

The bird rose to the sky once more, cawing loudly as it circled around me, preparing for another attack.

Krank...

My eyes scoured the area for any cover I could use to hide from Raven's aerial assault and surely enough, I spotted the same boulder I had huddled behind last time.

I scrambled to my feet, gritting my teeth against the pain and sprinted toward it, hoping to reach it before Raven could catch up.

Swish...

The sound of Raven's powerful wings filled my ears as it closed in on me once again, but I managed to make it behind the boulder just in time to avoid its talons.

I could even feel the air pressure from its wings as it passed overhead, causing me to gasp for breath and clutch at my side where the wound was bleeding profusely.

"..."

For some time, I lay there, catching my breath and watching in terror as the Raven continued to circle around me like a vulture waiting for its prey to die.

Its intense gaze never left me and I knew that it wouldn't allow me to escape easily.

This prompted me to relax a bit since it didn't seem like the bird was planning to attack me any time soon.

This gave me a moment to assess my situation and try to understand what the hell was happening.

'How could a bird come back to life after I killed it?'

I couldn't quite comprehend the possibility of a being coming back to life, especially after I had seen the raven's lifeless body on the ground just moments prior.

However, if that's not the case...

Unknowingly my eyes shifted to the same place where I had killed the monster and I noticed that there was no blood or any signs of a struggle on the ground.

It was as if it never happened...

Suddenly, a chilling thought crossed my mind. What if this was all just a hallucination caused by the blood loss?

What if I was still lying on the ground somewhere in the forest, bleeding and slowly dying, while my mind conjured up the image of my last memory?

"Too many unknown variables..."

I muttered to myself, trying to stop the blood from gushing out of my wound.

"Ah... here it comes..."

I felt my vision fading as I started to lose consciousness. The last thing I saw before I blacked out was the black silhouette of the Raven against the gray sky, still circling above me like a vulture.

This was the second time I was killed by the talon's of the Raven.
