Following a similar path, when they found a fork in the road, Connor took them in a different direction. Although there were no instructions or explanations, at least Xavier knew that this path led to the well at the top of the hill. At least their journey was a little quieter as the Goddess slumbered beneath her dreams. Their steps were quick and hurried.
Xavier was a little surprised that even though their body comparisons were quite far apart, he was almost overwhelmed by Connor's much faster and more agile pace. He was still wondering if Connor would accept his invitation as a partner even though a definite answer had already been given.
"We're almost there. Don't just jump in or sound-sensitive people will suspect this place." Connor warned.
Xavier cleared his throat. Their pace began to slow as Connor held up his hand, there was no other way but up the assistive device they had been debating. They climbed slowly and when their heads were at the end of the hole, Connor lifted his head slightly, checking the surroundings in case a stranger got lost near the well.
After making sure all was safe, Connor jumped up with the well wall as a reference, followed by Xavier making the same move after he threw the Goddess to the side of the well.
Even though he knew it was nighttime, he still didn't expect the forest to be so dark and sultry. There was hardly any wind through the forest even though he wanted it to cool down after running around underground.
"I'm sure there can't be anyone wandering around here. We shouldn't be too wary of them, Connor."
"Who says? Jack once left the well and accidentally ran into villagers. What's worse is that the villagers are planning to spread a story that there's a well on the hill that's inhabited by monsters."
"I understand. You just don't want the secret of the underground room to be revealed, right?"
"Exactly. It's lucky that Jack killed him right away or that guy would have destroyed what we've worked for all these years."
"Killed him? That's so sadistic!" Xavier was so shocked that he forgot about the still sleeping Cytherea.
"It's better than the worst, Mr Xavier..." While they were discussing, from the direction of the village they could see a roaring red light. "It seems the show has begun. It would be nice to witness a disaster that rarely happens in this village."
Although they were not close to the village, at least the warmth from the fire was carried by the wind that slowly entered the forest. The leaves danced and the friction of the fallen leaves created a gurgling sound, slowly they clung roughly to Cytherea's body and face, instantly realising
"Hmm... Where am I?" Her face was that of a fool and confused.
None of them cared and watched as the villagers began to panic and leave their homes, trying to put out the fire that was raging in the market.
Ten minutes passed, and half the market had been reduced to ashes. Enrique had deliberately targeted the market where many sellers had reneged on their agreements and contracts. His face showed no mercy, quickening his pace and strengthening his magic so that the fire would not go away before all their possessions were destroyed. Hundreds of vendors, some of whom had already given up their careers in the market, cried hysterically and hit the ground repeatedly.
They strongly condemned the perpetrators who set fire to the market intentionally or unintentionally. Behind the face of misery, there was one person who laughed while circling the market and cursing at them. Unable to hide his happiness, he hurriedly left the village after wearing a face covering and clothes that they almost never saw.
The guards and some of the villagers tried to catch him, but their efforts were futile and meaningless. Enrique was so nimble and agile that they couldn't even touch his clothes.
From the top of the hill, the two of them could see one man being chased by hundreds of people through the village gates. Roars and cries combined to create the deepest hatred for Enrique.
"Don't tell me he's taking them to this well." Xavier gritted his teeth and panicked slightly.
"Take it easy, Mr Xavier. Master Enrique has already prepared everything. Our job and his request is only one, to see what surprises he has in store."
Although his words sounded full of confidence, it did not rule out one of the villagers having abilities as a fighter or a wizard. If that happened and they won in terms of quantity, Connor would inevitably follow to the scene of the clash.
'What the hell are they doing? I've run far enough from the village but their stamina hasn't decreased at all. Is there something I don't know after all this time on the surface?'
That irregularity shook Enrique a little mentally, knowing that hundreds of people simultaneously and unitedly did not stop their footsteps before catching the market arsonist. The locals didn't stop spewing abuse and insults. Many of them wanted to kill Enrique. Even earlier, the villagers had left their sharp weapons outside the village, scattered on the grass. Although there were many of them, that one man was still ahead in terms of nimbleness to avoid attack.
'I should take them to the 'crocodile pit' we've prepared. Let's hope they're all stupid and desensitised.'
Enrique's ignorance of the stamina of the locals was quite troublesome. But he hoped this low-grade trap would catch them in one go. The trap, which Enrique had prepared months earlier, was located near the hill used as access to the 'basement'.
'Good, they're all hooked. Now I'll leave everything to you, Connor."
They had known each other for a long time and understood each other. Connor had always been a disappointment to Enrique in any matter. Even so, he didn't want to give up his trust in his friend. Of course, as a wise person, Connor was very grateful to be trusted and would not continue to disappoint his master.
His task this time was simple. Pressing the 'red button' that Enrique had entrusted to him. Any child under the age of 3 would have been able to complete the task. But for the umpteenth time, Connor failed as a trusted person after he realised the 'red button' was no longer in his pocket.
'Bastard. I'm sorry, Master Enrique. In the end, I still let you down on our last night together.' Tears instantly rolled down his cheeks.
