Just as Wade had predicted, the Slytherins didn't go to the professors to complain.
Seven or eight Slytherins had ambushed a single Ravenclaw of the same age, only to lose and end up crying in fear. Even someone like Malfoy, who constantly bragged about his "father," didn't want anyone to know about such an embarrassing incident.
After Wade left that day, the group helped each other to the infirmary, claiming they had accidentally caused an explosion while privately practicing potions.
Such mishaps were common among students, but it was still strange for so many to be injured at once. Madam Pomfrey believed Professor Snape had failed in his duties to supervise properly and spent over half an hour complaining about it.
When Snape heard that several students from his house had been injured, he rushed to the infirmary. Even before he entered, he could hear Madam Pomfrey's complaints.
A confused Snape: "..."
Not knowing what had happened, he assumed it was indeed his fault and stood silently at the door, enduring the scolding.
—After all, back when Snape was a student at Hogwarts, Madam Pomfrey had already been the school nurse. Snape often got into conflicts with the Marauders (James Potter and his friends) and frequently ended up injured, requiring Madam Pomfrey's care. Nowadays, Snape could argue with Dumbledore, but in front of her, he still held back his temper.
Though Snape said nothing, his cold gaze swept over the injured students. He immediately recognized that the large patches of swelling on their bodies were caused by failed Cure for Boils potions.
But who, after more than half a year of Potions classes, would still make such a rookie mistake?
If it had been Neville Longbottom from Gryffindor, or the "explosion expert" Seamus Finnigan, it would have made more sense.
After Madam Pomfrey went to tend to other students, Snape walked over and asked, "What happened?"
Malfoy, his face covered in ointment, kept his head down, making it hard to read his expression. In a low voice, he replied, "It was my mistake, Professor."
Snape narrowed his eyes.
Draco Malfoy's attitude reminded him of something familiar—like his own self from over a decade ago, when he would lie in the infirmary and give the same kind of response to others.
But back then, Snape had known that telling the truth wouldn't help him; it would only invite ridicule and more bullying. Draco Malfoy, who is spoiled by his parents and unaware of his own arrogance, is now hiding the truth for what reason?
Still, since the whole group had suffered together, Snape didn't bother to dig deeper—he had always thought that with Draco Malfoy's arrogant and sharp-tongued demeanor, it was only a matter of time before he got into trouble.
…
The next day at lunch, Michael and Wade were heading to the Great Hall for a meal.
When they ran into some Slytherins, Michael instinctively tensed up, but the two Slytherins—Millicent and Nott—just lowered their heads slightly. It wasn't until Wade and Michael had walked past that they resumed whatever they were doing.
"—What did you do to them?" Michael asked in disbelief.
"Uh..." Wade thought for a moment. "You might not believe this—but before I even entered the classroom yesterday, they had already given up resisting."
Michael gave him a suspicious look but then nodded knowingly. "If it's some unspeakable secret, then just pretend I didn't ask."
"It's not really a secret," Wade replied slowly. "I could show you sometime, as long as you're not too scared."
"How scary could it be?" Michael was initially skeptical but then hesitantly asked, "—Did you get your hands on a Boggart?"
A Boggart is a magical creature that can shapeshift into a person's worst fear.
Wade shook his head. "Not quite... though if I had the chance, I'd definitely like to encounter one."
Just then, a group of Slytherin girls led by Pansy passed by. When they saw Wade, they awkwardly nodded at him.
After several encounters like this, Wade noticed a subtle change in how the Slytherins—at least some of the first-year Slytherins—treated him. It wasn't with resentment, contempt, or a desire for revenge, but rather a mixture of fear with a hint of respect and admiration.
It seems that Slytherins have a certain tendency to admire strength...
This thought briefly crossed Wade's mind.
...
Without the Slytherins targeting him, most of Wade's school life became focused on studying.
He didn't even go to watch the Quidditch match between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff, though he heard that Harry caught the Golden Snitch in just five minutes, and Snape, who was refereeing, apparently looked very upset.
The Undetectable Extension Charm turned out to be surprisingly difficult, especially since Wade's goal was to create something like Newt Scamander's suitcase, which seemed like a small world inside.
The complexity of this goal was even higher, and Professor Murray advised him not to rush.
In his spare time, Wade crafted two alchemy creations to practice his skills. One was a slowly rotating Möbius strip with a tiny figure walking on it endlessly.
The other was a small crab that automatically swept and mopped the floor, sometimes spraying cheerful, colorful bubbles, which both Hermione and Padma adored.
By the way, on Sunday afternoon, Wade brought his insect sparring partners to the Umbrella room. The result was a cacophony of sharp, unprecedented screeches from everyone present.
Harry disarmed a praying mantis with a powerful Disarming Charm, while Hermione successfully cast a Shield Charm for the first time. Michael used a fire spell to burn a spider, causing it to screech loudly.
It turned out that although the insect sparring partners were hideous in appearance, their teaching effectiveness was excellent.
By the end of the session, even Neville showed significant improvement—when Padma was being attacked, he jumped onto a spider's back and thrust his wand into one of its large, compound eyes.
Lupin's magic tutoring had also begun, and the first spell Wade requested to learn was the Memory Extraction Spell.
[Lupin: May I ask—why do you want to learn this spell?]
The words Lupin wrote in the notebook had a cautious tone, and he subtly warned Wade.
[Lupin: According to the Ministry of Magic's regulations, any spells that manipulate another person's memory are illegal.]
[Wade: The user is myself.] After a moment, Wade's response appeared on the page: [Wade: I've forgotten something important and need to remember it. Also, I want to learn Occlumency—do you know it?]
[Lupin: Of course. During the Wizarding War, we all had to learn how to prevent enemies from extracting information directly from our minds.
But to be honest, I'm not an expert in this field. Someone truly skilled in this kind of magic would be Severus Snape.]
[Wade: I just need to know the basic methods of practice. At the very least, I want to prevent others from silently invading my mind and taking control of my will.]
Wade had no intention of going to Snape to learn Occlumency. Those skilled in Occlumency were often also adept at Legilimency, and there was no way Wade would allow anyone to peer into his thoughts and memories.
This method of communication through the book of friends made Wade feel much safer. Even if the learning process was slower, he could gradually improve through practice.
Inside the Room of Requirement, Wade finished writing a sentence and, while waiting for Lupin's reply, glanced at a gray stone basin placed on a nearby pillar.
The basin was wide and shallow, empty without a drop of water inside. Its outer edge was set with a ring of gemstones, sparkling and giving it a very ornate appearance.
