The car glided to a stop in front of the imposing glass and steel structure that I figured out was our destination.
Alexander turned to me after parking, his gaze soft. "Ready?"
I offered him a weak smile, my hand already reaching for the door handle. "Yeah," I replied, forcing a smile and shoving down all thoughts of the impending doom that would happen if or when Alexander found out about my deception.
The hurried walk through the lobby did little to calm my nerves. Finally, we reached the designated conference hall, a dimly lit large space buzzing with low conversations and the soft glow of a big projector screen.
As we entered, heads turned in our direction, before quickly going back to the screen. Following Alexander's lead, we slipped into the two empty seats at the back. My hand instinctively reached for my pen, ready to take notes.
