บท 1: Locked in the Darkness

"Orion?"

I woke up, alarmed by the sudden voice.

"Lucy?" I croaked, my eyes barely open and my throat dry like a desert. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine, as for now. I heard some strange sounds outside and I thought you'd better check it out. You know, we don't wanna get eaten by cranky zombies tonight." She laughed. "Okay…so there might be thousands of zombies surrounding our train."

Lucy was an important person to me — my best friend since childhood — but sometimes she procrastinated telling people important things, and in this situation, extremely important things.

"What?!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, surprised I hadn't awakened everyone in the train. "Sorry, sorry. Ah, could you inform the others?"

I strided to the other side of the train, trying not to bump into anything, considering the lack of illumination, as Lucy's voice started to trail off toward the other side of the shelter — our safe haven.

The shelter, built in a busted up train, — that was in way better shape before the zombies attacked — had been originally built for the survival of the remaining thirty people, or so, alive from the zombie apocalypse. Lately, however, some survivors began to complain about the leader about not being "good enough" or "strong enough" to keep the group safe.

I, as the group leader, would try to divert the group's attention by changing the subject to avoid the group from falling apart — but I knew it would happen one day. However, I never thought that the day I was talking about would happen so soon…

"Keok?" I said, trying to awaken one of the survivors that surprisingly hadn't awakened despite all the noise.."Keok??"

Keok was one of my closest friends. Or was. The whole zombie apocalypse problem broke our relationship apart into pieces of only our past memories.

"Huh...? Oh. Orion. What do you want?" Keok groaned, his tone changing from half awake to distinctly annoyed upon merely seeing my face. "What's that sound in the—"

"Listen, Keok, there's thousands of zombies outside. Could you please help everyone get to safety?" I pleaded.

Keok looked pissed off, not in the way he always did whenever I asked him a favor. This time he looked pissed. I could sort of relate as I would be annoyed if I woke up to find out that there were thousands of zombies outside — waiting to devour you.

"This is the third time something so disastrous has happened! We would've been a better group without you! Because of you, our group has been in dangerous situations several times, half of us almost dying!" He shouted, furiously.

I stood there stunned as all the others started to wake up from his thundering.

"You know what I think? We should form a new group with me as the leader. I'd be better, and way safer as the group leader." Keok grinned. "Who agrees?"

A bunch of people nodded or murmured yes as anger seeped into me.

Right when I was going to snap and vehemently yell, "That's because you just want to be the group leader!", the door barged open. Mobs of zombies were squeezing their way into the shelter.

I knew I had to get the group to safety before Keok could accuse me for anything else.

"Everyone—"

"Everyone, follow me so we can escape." Keok interrupted confidently.

Everyone followed him to the other train door, leaving me puzzled. I could hear Keok's voice echoing, commanding everyone to follow him, assuring the survivors that he'll lead them to safety.

I quickly remembered I'd be devoured by a bunch of zombies if I didn't react. I ran toward the other end of the train, seeking the door.

By the time I reached the door, everyone had escaped. I saw Lucy as she was about to exit the train, her blonde hair highlighted with streaks of pink swaying gracefully in the cold wind blowing outside.

"Lucy! What happened? Where's Keok bringing the group? Why—?" All my questions were interrupted when I saw her face that had finally turned over to look at me, guilt written all over it.

"I'm sorry…" Lucy told me, her voice dry.

Thud!

She had locked the door from the outside, leaving me and the mob of following zombies only.

"Lucy..?"

I was abandoned, trapped in the darkness with the zombies closing in on me. I began to panic, my heart racing as I realized I had no way out.

As the zombies got closer, I looked around frantically for a weapon, or at least something to defend myself with, but despite the lack of illumination, I knew there was nothing nearby.

I stood there, devoid of hope. I could sense that my "journey" was reaching its conclusion at that very moment.
