"Books, pens, timetable?" Rita asked as Ina rolled her wheelchair inside the school.
"All check," Ina replied. Sydney thought Ina was a very funny person. For someone who was badmouthed and impressonably loved to bully people, she made friends with someone as calm as Rita. They were like two opposites.
"Locker?" Rita asked again. That was when they both remembered that Sydney hadn't claimed her locker.
"You guys go ahead. I'll catch up." Without waiting for a go-ahead, Sydney dashed off. She was able to locate her locker as per the instructions given. Hers was the number 155, a red-colored one. She was able to unlock it and reset the lock code to the one she preferred. All the textbooks she would need were already inside. Immediately, she brought out her timetable to check what classes she would be having in the morning.
While busy, a body bumped into her, pushing her to hit her head on the edge of one of the overlaying boards. Angrily, she turned around to see a group of boys staring at her but she didn't mind. She was ready to beat them all up if they misbehaved.
"Which one of you douchebags pushed me?" She asked but none of them said anything.
"Are you all deaf? Or do you want me to repeat myself?" She situated her bag in the locker and cracked her fingers.
"What are you going to do, pretty face?" One who seemed to be their leader spoke.
"I pushed you. Are you going to report me to your daddy?" He imitated the voice of a little girl. Sydney didn't know when her hand moved but all she knew was that it landed on his face, causing him to retreat a bit. He felt some metallic taste in his mouth.
"There's more where that came from," Sydney warned him. "Don't ever think you can harass me and get away with it, maggot."
The punched boy wanted to retaliate and hit her when she turned to collect her backpack but his intention was intercepted by another. Sydney turned to see the two men glaring daggers at each other. The guy whom she had punched forcefully dragged his hand from his foe. Together, he and his gang walked away.
"Not even a thank you?" The guy asked when Sydney wanted to walk away.
"Uhm... Thank you?" She shrugged and continued walking. He rushed to her side, astonished by the fact that she was able to stand against all those guys. Almost everybody in school feared them.
"And why are you following me?" She asked, not sparing him a glance.
"Nothing. You're new here?" He asked.
"Yes, and you're bugging me. Beat it." She complained. When she didn't know which other turn to take, she stopped and looked at the map. She became quite confused and the only person around was the person she just told to get lost.
"Do you need help?" He offered and she just sighed.
"I have English now and I don't know where to go."
He took the map and timetable from her, only to find out they were headed to the same class.
"Follow me then." He smiled and gave her back her things. The walk to the classroom was a silent one. Sydney used that time to check out her guide as she never really cared to look at him when he first approached her. She noticed how tall and handsome he was, which reminded her of Abel. She also noticed the arm badge he wore.
"School president?!" She explained, almost stopping in her tracks.
"I hope I'm not in trouble on my first day." She stepped away from him a little but he only laughed.
"Not at all. You were only standing up for yourself. And here was are," They stooped in front of a closed door. He opened the door and stepped aside.
"After you..." Entering inside, the class was rowdy and luckily, nobody seemed to notice her.
"Thank you, school president." She muttered and walked hurriedly to Ina before he could reply.
"Now I see why it took you so long to get here. You were with the school president. How wonderful that you have caught his attention." Ina stared at her with ogling eyes while Rita just laughed a little.
"You wish. I was lost and he helped me out. Well, it's a good thing I'm not in trouble for punching someone on my first day. Such a nice president." She smirked.
"You punched someone? Who?" Ina squealed. Sydney opened her mouth to reply but was rudely interrupted by the shutting of the door. It was the gang she had met earlier. The guy whom she had blown in the face sighted her and sneered. Before long, they took their seats.
"You punched Mark in the face? Girl, you're fire. I wonder what he did to incur your wrath."
They didn't have enough time to chat as their homeroom teacher came in. Skipping the new student introduction, much to the delight of Sydney, he went straight to the lesson of the day.
During the lunch break, Sydney was preparing to go out with her clique when the gang surrounded them, with the wounded guy standing directly opposite her.
"Did you come back for more?" She smirked and regressed in her seat.
"Or what? Are you going to report me to your mommy?"
"You'll pay for this, one way or another." He growled.
"Ooof... I'm shaking in my boots." She mocked and stood up.
"Get lost, bozos. Or I'm going to dethrone your boss here and make you clean the whole toilet for a week." She threatened them. At this time, the entire class's attention was now on them. Not the kind of spotlight she wanted. But Ina was thrilled about it while Rita stared frantically.
"You're fortunate George stepped in. You would have been on the hospital bed today."
"Good for me then." She walked past him, nudging him a bit on the shoulder.
"Wait up babe," Ina yelled, pushing Rita fast to catch up with Sydney. As Mark was about to go back to his seat, George intercepted.
"Leave her alone. Whatever happened was all your fault." He warned. "It was already embarrassing enough for you. Don't let it get worse."
"Of course, I'm not so stupid to let it get worse. I'm going to show her who's the boss here to preserve my reputation. And the best part? I'm going to do it in front of the whole school."
