บท 1: The School

The winds of a far away place stirred, the clouds gathered, and the earth rumbled. A storm, an ominous sign for folks of this quaint little town. They hurried on their feet, parents dragging children, and children dragging friends.

Among these, a particular child stood, looking at the storm up above. His eyes shone a gleam, one of curiosity and a desire to explore.

The hurried steps of the people resounded in his ear, but his eyes stayed glued on that storm. He could see, no sense something.

Something beyond a simple storm, a storm that he had seen many times. This one, it held something deeper. The winds picked up, raising some leaves as they increased in intensity. And it didn't help that it was fall.

In one corner of the town, the leaves gathered in a small tornado. In another, they flew in the winds like a bird on its flight.

One leaf landed on his face, but he picked it and threw it just as quick. This storm gave him a bubbly feeling, and he knew these types of storms were harmless. From experience of course.

These storms were a recurring occurrence around here. Well, at least for the past few months. Before, storms were rarer than gold here.

But not as recurring as the lightning that flashed up above, followed by the rumbling infamous for scaring children and adults alike.

Rumbling that grew more intense by the minute, the second, and finally, stopped. The storm, it just paused.

He could see a bolt of purple, still on its way. A leaf in front of him, a few people still getting into their homes,

He looked back a the lightning bolt, only to see it transformed. From purple, it became a pitch abyss black. Everything was still paused, but that lightning bolt.

That already abnormally large zig-zaggy shape of destructive energy became bigger. And bigger.

Then solid. Eventually, the lightning bolt transformed.

A raven, darker than the night itself, but holding a presence even greater descended. As tall as 5 men and as wide as 2, it flapped its wings at great speed.

Every flap was imposing and held the manner of a noble, and its stare pierced through the frozen town. It scanned the place, its wings slowing down as it practically floated in one place.

However, that wasn't for long. Soon, it began shrinking and shrinking until it became the size of a normal raven.

The young boy could no longer see it, as it was too far and too small to see now. But the young boys eyes stayed glued, unmoving and resolute.

"The Chosens Of Heaven Gather." A sound rang, deep and powerful.

"The Center Of The Apex Summons."

"The School Calls You!"

The young boys eyes grew hazy, and he started to limply walk through the town. Everything was dark now, even though it was early morning just a moment ago. The stars that shone so brightly every night, were now gone, replaced by a blackened abyss.

Darkness snuck around, and whispered in his ear. For the first time, the light in the young boys eyes broke. That light of curiosity that danced in his eyes, it broke.

The scene of him waking up with his parents gone flashed through his eyes. When he thought of that, he almost stopped resisting. But then, he thought of the one who took him. His aunt, and the plenty of love she had given him.

This darkness, it no longer intrigued him. He clawed at the air, but all his hands scratched was black. He could no longer see anything within this abyss.

Except for two blazing balls as bright as torches. They guided his way, like the light at the end of a tunnel. He watched as the two torches went further and further away, and the whispers of what could only be beings from heaven come.

"Skealis Erquis Halfor Calin." The voice said in incomprehensible words.

"Come to the depths, to The Netherlands." The words beguiled the boy in a now understandable language.

"Come to the depths, The Netherlands."

These words, they were obviously bull, but they enchanted the boy. They seduced him and stripped him, laying their hands all over him. It was no longer the seducing sound of the voice that was drawing him, but something more.

Something he couldn't quite put his hands on, like when your mind goes blank and you forget something momentarily. And then you would snap your fingers or knead your forehead, attempting to recall what you had just forgotten.

But it wasn't as if he forgot something, but more like he knew that there was something. In the end, what he felt was a confusing thing, something he knew was there but couldn't just quite tell.

In his stupor, he failed to notice the darkness around him receding, only leaving a pitch black raven.

'To the Netherlands? What Netherlands? The Nether of fabled legend, of folklore? No, that's impossible.'

Everyone and their grandmothers knew of the Nether-also commonly known as hell-the punishment for the evil and sinful. The punishment for the villains of the world.

Or better known as the land of the wrongful dead.

But to come to the Nether? What sort of fools joke was this?

The young boy found himself slowly winning, subduing the temptation to listen to that voice. And eventually, he broke out of the daze.

The now dulcet wind cooly flowed, the earlier deafening thunder and lightning gone just like your dad, and the percussive sound the rain would make as it hit the ground was even more gone.

Only a small letter, neatly laid in front of him sat there. He took it, then tore it open:

"To Shaun Evedane Of The Caprius Clan.

First chapter yaay. The world of the Apex is much more wide than you think, so don't believe that these are the only options available. As for what the world of the Apex is, you'll see.

There is still much much more to see. Keep up!
