Ariana stiffened upon hearing his question, she opened her mouth but then closed it right back. She seemed tired as if whatever she was fighting, rejecting or suppressing was about to make an appearance.

She often did this whenever she was trying her best to reign in whatever lived inside that prude head of hers. Nicolai had tried understanding her, he swore that he did, but it was not working. 

The only thing that he had figured out by now was that there was no point in giving Ariana the space that she wanted and asked for. It would only make her slip back into whatever zone she typically hides. 

Nope, he needed to make those emotions sweep the rug out of her feet just like how he did tonight. 

Not to mention, he was the kind of man who would act first and think of consequences later. There was no point in changing his modus operandi now.
