บท 20: Central Plains and a Hill

Sargon and Pharis left the inn after eating breakfast. Sargon thought aloud while walking, "I think I'll buy a bestiary on the way out. I saw a bookstore a little way down the road." Pharis praised a good idea and they went and bought one. On the way out, they were stopped by the same old guard. The guard had some things to deliver, "Hello Sir Jupiter, before you leave, Marquis Ophris wanted to deliver a message to you. He welcomes you to Fereldyn and has granted you honorary citizenship for your prestige, you can now use the other gate freely to come and go. He wants you to know that a noble one such as yourself is very welcome here. I won't you hold you up any longer now Sir Jupiter."

Sargon was pleased with the recognition, "I am very grateful for his words and the gift. Thank you for the message." They then left Fereldyn and headed to the border. The border would be a nearly half-day walk, but at their enhanced speed, they reached the border way before noon. They crossed it without stopping and continued traveling into the central plains. They started curving up to the north instead of going completely east to get closer to the monster lands. They stopped around noon because the monster lands had come into view, and they were already quite close to them now.

After looking around, Sargon saw there were a good number of hills around them. They were spread out across the plains in this area. He decided to make a hill camp that can easily become a fort later. "Mother nature provides.", he muttered with a smirk. He turned to Pharis, "Pharis, we are going to dig into a hill and make camp in it for today. Later we can properly hollow it out and make it cozier." Pharis liked the idea, "Living in a hill sounds cool Master, hehe."

Sargon picked out a tall and wide hill. Tall enough to be a four-story building and it had a radius of around 100 meters. Sargon realized after another look around, he had chosen the biggest hill in the area. He was happy with his choice. they rushed over to the hill, set down their gear, and started digging with their hands. They made short work of the hill and hollowed out a large space where they easily fit two bedrooms and bathrooms, a large kitchen, and a large living room.

Satisfied, they moved their gear inside. They decided to exit and stand atop the hill to take a look at the surroundings that have become their yard essentially. They spotted a herd of very hairy grazing creatures. Sargon pulled out the bestiary and flipped through it looking for the creature. He found the page, "Liklak, a bovine with long thick hair and strong legs for extended running. Adorned with two short horns pointing diagonally forward and a very hard forehead. Hair is often used for tough clothing, rope, blankets, and bedding for its soft texture and strength. Liklak cows produce slightly sweet and creamy drinkable milk."

"We need to get a Liklak cow or two later after we build a fence for them.", he said excitedly. Pharis happily agreed too. They spent the rest of the day gathering astra and adding stars to their sky. When night came, Pharis went to sleep. Sargon instead went to the top of the hill to meditate under the stars. After the library visit, he was even more convinced that there is a way to establish some sort of connection to the stars.

So he sits there in full armor directing his astral sense into the sky. Even within his astral horizon, he was meditating. In his deep meditation, even his astral became slightly visible to the naked eye, overlapping his physical body. The silence in his mind was broken by a soft chime. He focused on the chime and it became more pronounced rather than faded. The chime stopped and was taken over by ethereal singing. The voice was inhuman and sounded like a genderless choir. He focused best he could on the singing, but could hear nothing more than the choir.

If you were watching from outside, you would see some faint starlight on his figure coming from the sky. For the whole night, he listened intently to the choir. As morning broke, the choir quieted for a few seconds. Then a female voice said angelically, "Keep looking to the stars." Soon after he was jerked from wherever he was and he opened his eyes like he was startled. To his side, he saw the sun rising and the stars fading out of the sky. He did not feel tired in the least depsite meditating all night. He sat there contemplating what he heard until he could feel Pharis rustling and waking up sometime later.

He went into the cave and they some dried meat for breakfast. During the short meal, Sargon noticed when inspecting his astral world that nearly his entire sky was full of stars now. He only had a little bit left. Soon he would be able to break through to ebony level. He decided, "Pharis, we are going to the monster lands to hunt materials to improve our new home and food for our bellies. We won't go too deep today, but still, always be wary. Always consider yourself behind enemy lines when in the monster lands." Pharis acknowledged Sargon's words seriously.

Leaving the cave, they ran to the monster lands. Pharis had her short bow, while Sargon only had his sword. They found a few beetle monsters that were the size of large dogs. Pharis made quick work of them. Sargon killed some hairless thin bipedal lizards with very long claws with neck slices. They didn't want to damage the bodies of their prey too much. They hunted some more animalistic monsters by noon. Sargon thought they had hunted enough. Now they would have many furs, skins, bones, and other materials to improve their new home with and make some basic things.

They returned from the monster lands with no issue. The dead prey was taken into Sargon's astral horizon. A skill he was glad to have learned. The rest of the day was dismantling corpses. Claws and bones were made into tools and knives. Bones became bedframes and grass was used to fill fur mattresses. A door made from the carapaces from the beetle monsters. Leather was made from the lizards and meats were dried. Sargon learned on Earth all of these skills he was using. Despite never using them on a monster before, he did very well still. Nothing went to waste and by dinnertime, fresh meat was cooked.

All the materials were harvested and properly dealt with so they don't stink or decay. They would continue their home improvement task tomorrow. Pharis went to sleep on her new bed while Sargon was again on top of the hill meditating.

His mind became silent in deep meditation and listened for the choir. He found it and focused on it. Listening to the choir again, the night went on.
