"So you're sending the WEAK LINK to challenge the great Cooler?!" Cooler realized with a growl.
"I'll be more than enough to take you down, Cooler." Gohan told him calmly, "Hanna offered you an out, you know. You can still take it." He reminded the Frost Demon, hoping that he would take it. Despite the fact that this Gohan was notably more aggressive than the canon one, it didn't change the fact that he didn't like the idea of hurting others.
"Gohan, he's a Frost Demon just like Frieza. Once you start fighting, you can't hold back. It'll be you, or him, end of conversation, all right? Don't let anything hold you back." I called out.
"She's right, son!" Goku agreed with me. If Cooler ended up savable at the last moment, that'd be one thing, but in a fight for your life, you don't have the freedom to hold back out of fear of killing your enemy.
After a moment of hesitating, Gohan nodded in response to what Goku and I said, but I could tell that he wasn't totally convinced. He was probably going to hold back. That was something that he'd have to break through on his own, or he was going to lose.
"He's still hesitating." Piccolo noted with the first clash, fist on fist between Gohan and Cooler, Gohan was instantly thrown back like a rag doll, his fist having been dodged by a counterattacking Cooler. From there, Gohan stayed on the defensive, his 200 million Silver Mode power level simply not strong enough to challenge Cooler's power, which was likely at around 450 million or so. But even with that in mind, they weren't exactly leagues apart. He should've given Cooler a pretty good run for his money with the training that he'd been through in the last four and a half years. Even Frieza would've easily lost out to Gohan at this level, but it wasn't challenging Cooler's final form, because he wasn't using all of his power.
"Solar Flare!" Panicking, Gohan used a Solar Flare to get some distance between him and Cooler, but Cooler didn't let up beyond a moment of hesitation, which Gohan used to get some distance and charge ki into the palm of his hand.
I was pretty sure that he was trying to charge up something like a Kamehameha, but as soon as Cooler started rushing in even though his eye was still closed, Gohan realized that he didn't have the time he'd expected. "Breaker Orb!" With only a split second to react, Gohan apparently decided to use one of the simple techniques he'd learned from sparring with Raditz, condensing the energy he'd gathered into a ball the size of a beach ball, tossing it at Cooler with everything he had.
When Raditz did it, he usually condensed his energy into a ball the size of a fist. The extra size didn't help, but rather hinder the potency of the technique itself, which was now weak enough that Cooler simply ignored it, even as it exploded in his face. In fact, the explosion distracted Gohan enough to slow his reaction when Cooler flew through the explosion to punch him in the face.
"Hellbuster!" Cooler shouted, creating an energy orb around the same size as Gohan's, but containing far more energy. As the force of Cooler's punch blasted Gohan into a hill, the Hellbuster followed after him, exploding a moment later with enough power to completely destroy the hill itself.
"Come on, Gohan." I muttered to myself, sensing out my brother's energy. That Hellbuster had been more than strong enough to deal serious damage to Gohan, but I knew that he had to be okay. Piccolo and Goku beside me believed it, too. Gohan wouldn't lose to something as stupid as that.
A few moments later, my residual fears were assuaged as a small explosion rocked the landscape. Gohan had busted out of the hole that the Hellbuster had collapsed in around him. He wasn't in perfect condition. He'd clearly been hit head-on by the energy from the blast, and his jacket had been reduced to threads that slipped off of his shoulders, falling free in the wind while the shirt beneath was now about 2/3 of a shirt, covered in blood from the cauterized cuts all over his torso, but it was clear from the fire in my brother's eyes that the wounds weren't deep. There was no fear in his eyes, only something akin to rage.
"I can't lose to you." Gohan said quietly. Quiet enough that I barely heard it, but Cooler was closer than me.
"Too bad. You're still too young. You're barely in control of the powers you have." Cooler chided Gohan, making the ghost of a smile creep onto my face. Cooler was entirely right, and that was my brother's biggest trigger.
"If I'm going to catch up to Hanna... and dad, then I need to beat you! You'll help me get to the next level, Cooler!" Gohan declared.
"Yes. I'm sure you have talent, so young. You may very well surpass all of your friends someday... BUT! YOU! WILL! NEVER! DEFEAT ME! With nothing but talent! Your talent does not make you special! It does not make you better than those around you! I WORKED FOR YEARS TO OBTAIN THE POWER THAT I HAVE! OVERWHELMING POWER, AND TALENT ALONE WILL NEVER BE ENOUGH TO ALLOW YOU TO DEFEAT ME!" By the end of his tirade, Cooler was breathing hard, having screamed so loud that he'd actually uprooted a few trees with his speech. Clearly, talent was a big trigger for him. It was clear that he'd worked hard for his power. He had far more control than even Piccolo, as far as his power went, comparable control to Goku, who'd trained under Raika, but there were certain things that simple work wouldn't overcome, unless you knew what you were working for. Cooler had worked as hard as he could to surpass his younger brother, and he had, but he'd never known beyond that. Without direction, most of the hard work since he'd unlocked that new form was totally wasted.
Gohan's hard work on the other hand... he still had barriers to shatter.
Could he do that today, though?
