"In just half an hour, we should arrive at the hotel. It seems that danger is behind us!" Just as I thought this, a low hiss pierced the air. I caught a glimpse of the middle-aged man I had seen in Julianna's illusion; his head hung limply against his chest, his face turned toward the ground, as he emerged from behind a large tree in front of me. I could not fathom how he sensed my presence, but he let out a furious roar and raised the submachine gun in his hand. Every hair on my body stood on end, my heart racing faster than a roller coaster. "There's no way I can outrun a bullet!" Instinctively, I opted for the most perilous yet correct course of action. I quickened my pace and delivered a powerful flying kick to the man's chest.
The sound of gunfire reverberated violently in the air as the submachine gun unleashed a barrage. In that life-and-death moment, I watched in disbelief as the enemy was sent flying by my kick. "Congratulations, you have killed a zombie!" Julianna's sweet voice suddenly echoed behind me.
"Julianna! How did you follow me? Are you here to protect me?" Turning to see Julianna in her alluring shorts and crop top, I blurted out this foolish question, which earned me a sharp reprimand. "I'm your commentator and assistant; of course, I must follow you and record all your actions. That zombie you just dispatched was my previous client!"
"Ha!" I chuckled foolishly. Almost immediately, I was about to turn and flee; I certainly didn't want to end up like him, with my throat bitten out and transformed into a monster. To my surprise, Julianna snapped her fingers, and my feet lifted off the ground, floating into the air. "You fool, you need to collect the loot!"
"Right!" I quickly remembered the middle-aged man's submachine gun. "Although this weapon might not be the best, it's certainly better than being unarmed." I swallowed hard and reached for the gun in the man's grasp, easily seizing it.
Having taken this crucial step, I felt no hesitation as I also hoisted the man's belongings onto my shoulder. Of course, upon accidentally noticing his wallet in the pocket of his suit, I naturally pocketed it. All of this took no more than two minutes, but when I lifted my head, I saw a dozen gigantic spiders crawling out from the forest on the hill, hissing sharply, expressing their extreme animosity toward me. The emergence of these creatures, beyond my comprehension, reminded me of a popular online game called World of Warcraft.
Yet the spiders there were quite weak, and I had no idea whether the massive spiders before me were equally feeble. I knew for certain that I was far from being a warrior or mage equipped with powerful skills. The submachine gun roared to life the moment I realized the danger.
The first giant spider was struck by a hail of bullets, its green ichor spraying everywhere, and I finally exhaled a sigh of relief; these creatures could indeed be harmed by bullets. After dozens of shots were fired, one massive spider staggered, nearly incapacitated, but the remaining ten or so still advanced menacingly, and my submachine gun was out of ammunition. "Damn it!" If I still didn't realize I needed to turn and run now, I would truly be a fool.
These gigantic spiders were no slower than I was, and I could hear their relentless pursuit closing in. I frantically rummaged through the belongings left by the middle-aged man. After discarding useless items like a trowel and flashlight, I finally found twenty magazines. When the submachine gun began to spit fire again, the nearest gigantic spider was less than five meters away.
With newfound experience, I refrained from firing at the spider's body right away; instead, I aimed for its eight long legs. After just two magazines, one spider collapsed, rolling on the ground. Having grasped the technique, I focused my fire and managed to incapacitate four more spiders, finally putting a few more centimeters between me and death. These spiders, even larger than myself, possessed remarkable vitality; despite being hit by so many bullets, none had yet fallen.
"Damn it! If only I had explosives!" I muttered in frustration. As I swapped out the magazine, I felt several round objects. "No way! Who is this middle-aged man? How did he even acquire these?" In this age of advanced networking, although I had never encountered real weapons, forums detailing various arms provided more insight than professional soldiers. The popularity of games like Counter-Strike contributed as well. Along with the high-powered explosives, I also discovered two M92s, American military handguns. I pulled out one explosive and casually tossed it behind me; with a deafening boom, three massive spiders were blown to smithereens.
The surviving spiders, instead of retreating in fear, grew even more agitated, their pursuit intensifying. What kind of place was this Devil's Island?
Steeling myself, I tossed all the explosives I had and dove to the ground. The powerful blast wave pinned me firmly to the earth, rendering me unable to rise for some time. The giant spiders had pursued too closely, and when I finally managed to stand, I saw no intact bodies of the gigantic spiders remaining. I grabbed the submachine gun and sprayed down any twitching appendages, dispatching these terrifying giant spider monsters before suddenly realizing that darkness was beginning to descend.
"If you don't hurry, even stronger monsters will appear!" Just as I intended to respond to Julianna, a clear, melodious voice rang out.
"Omni… ah ah ah!" Looking up into the sky, I felt a chill run down my spine as the creature that had bitten the middle-aged man reappeared. "If I hadn't seen her kill someone, I would have surely mistaken her for an angel!" Without a second thought, I turned and sprinted away.
Knowing full well that the submachine gun in my hands would be of no use, I clung to it tightly; at least it was more powerful than my fists. The winged creature, resembling a beautiful woman, glided down from the sky after circling above. Sensing the wind behind me, I instinctively pulled the trigger. The bullets struck the creature's body as if hitting rubber; though I could see them embed within, they inflicted no wounds or damage whatsoever.
