Third Arc (Fallen Heart) - 301. Fair Trade II
Lady Belle swallowed her nervousness, her throat dry as she steadied herself. This was a rare opportunity to speak with Angel alone, and she didn't want to squander it. With a deep breath, she asked, "Why did you summon me, Your Majesty?"
Angel paused, his eyes drifting momentarily to the bracelet on her wrist before meeting her gaze. He genuinely didn't know where to start. He couldn't immediately cut to the case and ask for the bracelet. If he revealed his initial intention, that he was only interested in the bracelet, she would probably refuse to give it to him. After a moment of silence, he finally said, "I happened to see you when I was training earlier. I thought it might be nice to talk for a bit. Why haven't you returned yet? Is the duke still here?"
Lady Belle shook her head softly, trying to calm her racing heart. "No, Your Majesty. I came with my father in two different carriages. He has already left. I decided to stay a bit longer to take a walk in the garden. I love the garden so much," she said, her voice steady but her hands clasped tightly in her lap.
Angel's expression softened slightly at her mention of the garden. "You enjoy the garden here?" he asked, genuinely curious.
She nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. "Yes, it's beautiful. The flowers, the tranquility… it's like a piece of paradise."
Angel leaned back in his chair, trying to maintain a casual demeanor. "So, you decided to check out the training grounds and found me there?"
Lady Belle nodded again, her eyes sparkling slightly. "Yes, I did. I was curious to see the training grounds. I didn't expect to see you there."
Angel's brow furrowed slightly as he continued, "Does your father know you're still here?"
"Yes," she replied, her voice a bit more confident. "He knows I'm here."
Angel's gaze grew more intense. "Did your father say anything to you about the meeting?"
Lady Belle hesitated, her eyes turning melancholic as she recalled the conversation with her father. How he had told her that Princess Rose would become the queen of Euphorion. It was a bitter pill to swallow. Becoming queen had been her dream, and she believed that in this kingdom, no one could take that dream away from her. Yet, Rose had snatched it, despite her status as a political prisoner. But she couldn't voice these thoughts to Angel. After all, it was his decision. Her voice was barely above a whisper as she said, "He just mentioned something happened in Asteria."
Angel leaned forward, sensing her distress. "And?"
Lady Belle's silence stretched out, the air heavy with unspoken words. She felt a lump forming in her throat, her emotions threatening to overwhelm her.
Angel watched Lady Belle's reaction closely, noticing the way her face tightened with suppressed emotions. Her silence spoke volumes. He finally said, gently, "You don't have to answer if you don't want to."
But Lady Belle decided to answer. She took a deep breath, summoning every ounce of her composure. "I have heard your decision to make Princess Rose your Queen, Your Majesty." She bowed slightly, her voice wavering despite her best efforts to keep it steady. "Congratulations."
The words were hard for her to say, each one feeling like a dagger in her heart, but somehow, she managed to get them out. Angel tilted his head, studying her face intently. There was a mixture of sadness and determination in her eyes, and it struck him how much she was holding back.
A small smile appeared on Angel's face, though it was tinged with a hint of regret. "Thank you, Lady Belle," he said softly. "I know this might hurt you, so I thought of giving you a gift to console your heart."
Lady Belle's eyes widened in surprise. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. Angel never gave gifts out of nowhere unless there was a certain important event. Her heart raced, conflicting emotions swirling within her. Did this mean he cared for her, even just a little? Or was it merely a gesture of pity?
"A gift?" she echoed, her voice barely above a whisper. She tried to mask the hope and confusion in her tone, but it was difficult.
