บท 142: 141- Matthew's Misadventures

Matthew regularly got pocket money from his grandpa. But he was a thrifty boy. Over a decade he had been saving his pocket money – first in a big ornate wooden box; recently two years ago, in a private kids' bank unnoticed to anyone. Over fifty grand bucks he had in his kids bank account. He had an ATM card of the bank too; but he hardly used it. He took his ATM card and nothing else – no luggage except his favourite walkman, when he left for Kaerlud not saying anything to his foster parents and grandpa. He went Kaerlud by train. From internet he had already collected Karl the publisher's address. He reached there. Disguised as an old man to add some thrill to his adventure. Located a food truck standing before Karl's house. He ate a plate of noodles from the truck and inquired about the publisher. Then suddenly Karl came out of his house in a white sedan. Matthew hired a taxi and followed the white sedan to a beach condo. He asked the driver to wait there. Matthew saw that a girl was sitting outside the beach condo. Karl and the girl entered inside the condo. From a distance he peeped through the windows. The girl set a camera and Karl and the girl talked before the camera. Twice Karl rose from his sit and put his hands on the girl's shoulder. The second time he did that the girl got angry and hit his head with a brass bust that was on a table. Then she dangled the unconscious Karl upside down. Three other men came out of their hidings from inside the condo. After few minutes Karl gained his consciousness. The men and the girl talked some more minutes with dangling Karl and with a book in hand they got out of the building and the short balding man of the gang who seemed like the leader drove a black Toyota. Matthew asked the taxi driver to follow the black Toyota. In the mid way the black Toyota halted before a xerox shop and the bulky man of the gang got out of the car with the book in his hand. The black Toyota waited for five minutes; then the bulky man came with three more Xerox copies of the original book in his hand. Then the gang went to Green Bank Hotel. He got off the taxi and paid the driver. Then he went to the backside of the hotel. Sneaked into it through the backdoor. Discarded his disguise. Got rid of the fake beard and everything. He saw the gang enter a lift and the lift was pointing floor number four. He used the staircase and saw that the gang members separated at the lift and went to consecutive rooms. The short bald man went to room number sixty nine. He thought: They are going to read the book and discuss their game plans. He rushed to the backdoor, he saw a couple of blue blazers were hanging inside a room. He snatched one and ascended through lift to floor number four. He put the blue blazer behind a dustbin. Then he went downstairs to the front desk. He saw a service boy in a blue blazer and said to him, "Sir, I am from room number sixty nine. I was trying to call you; but perhaps your landline was busy. We need a room service – I mean four cups of tea and some biscuits. If you could…"

The boy nodded his head.

Then Matthew went upstairs again. He saw other members of the gang filter into room number sixty eight. It was good that they did not notice him. Within five minutes the service boy came to floor number four by lift with a trolley – on the trolley were several cups, a tea container, sugar cubes and some biscuits. Matthew smiled at the boy and the boy smiled back. He said, "It is all right sir. You leave it to me now. I will serve it to my friends. Thank you." And he handed the boy a generous tip and took the handle of the trolley. The boy opened the door of the lift and went down. Matthew waited for a few seconds; then rushed to the dustbin and got the blue blazer. He wore it and rushed back to the trolley. The trolley was beautifully decorated by a white table cloth and there was a shelf under the table cloth. Matthew got his walkman out of his pocket and switched on the record button; put it on the shelf under the table cloth. Pushed the trolley before room number sixty eight and knocked at the door and shouted, "Room service."

The bulky man opened the door. Matthew felt that the bulky man did not like him. He did not care who liked him or not. He just wanted answers to his questions. The bulky man told him that they had not asked for room service. Matthew lied him that the manager of the hotel had asked to serve in room number sixty eight. The bulky man dragged the trolley inside the room and closed the door on his face. Matthew was afraid that someone of the gang would search under the white table cloth and find his walkman.

He waited a long half an hour out in the lobby. He was eager to know what they were discussing. But he consoled his heart that if his walkman was found, he would know everything after sometime. When the door of the room clicked open, he hid himself behind a man size statue. The short bald man and the broody man emerged out of the room. The bulky man was still inside. He rushed to the door of the room. He asked in a gentle tone, "May I enter, sir?"

The bulky man from inside the room said, "No need to worry." He dragged the trolley out of the room for him. Matthew thanked him and dragged the trolley to the lift. Once the lift door was closed he got the walkman out of the self. He jumped with over joy.
