บท 118: 117- Moonlight Hotel
Papa and Veronica checked into Moonlight Hotel in Ceni. The climate of Ceni was a bit less cloudy than that of Belamundis. Veronica was tired; she went to bed and fell fast asleep. Papa could hear her gentle snore from the next door. They two had taken two separate rooms as usual. He was tired too; but he could not sleep. Sitting at the window he was thinking: What's missing? What's missing? Let's begin from the beginning then.
He remembered he was young then. Chief (Tara by name) was pregnant with Veronica. And her then Right-hand whom people called Rewa in reverence was pregnant with the boy. It was a law in their community that everyone's first son's head was to be offered to the chief.
Human sacrifices were common and frequent there. Men of the community're treated as dogs by women. Women had all the power and freedom there and men took care of households and children. These were violation of human rights according to government. Rumors spread. A government committee, namely Rehetogi Committee, headed by chief justice Rehetogi and other officials, had come to their village. Amid the committee members was there Andrew, as a matriarchy scholar. Papa had seen; even conversed with Andrew. He seemed a good man to him. Andrew met Rewa and her husband Ekus. Papa had a thought that Rewa's husband though meek was not interested in losing his first son. So he talked with Andrew – he was mixing up too much with Andrew, well few noticed it, because everyone thought as Rewa's husband was assigned by Rewa to take care of the committee members.
But Chief's a powerful lady – many officials and minister're her ardent and blind devotees, inclusive of many in Rehetogi Committee. So nothing was found in support of any human rights violation. Everything was found ok. The committee had come by two cars; went by two cars. Later after a week Rewa and her husband were not found anywhere in the village. They were searched everywhere; but were not found. Then Veronica was born. Chief was angry upon baby Veronica, because of pregnancy with Veronica, she was physically and mentally weak. So she could not stop Rewa from fleeing the village with her son. Chief searched for Rewa using her money-men-and-political power. But no. All in vain. Villagers and who knew the matter doubted Chief's celestial supernatural power. To prove her power she brought three burnt dead bodies by the help of Papa: one tall woman's, one man's and a little kid's. People thought these burnt dead bodies were of the escapee family.
Papa noticed Rewa's husband's friendship with Andrew. He guessed that somehow Andrew was responsible for manipulating Rewa to save her son and escape out of the village; and Andrew might have even helped them escape and settle at some secret place with their son. Papa did not tell it to anyone. Now he ruminated these facts again and again. Did he miss something that could have helped him catch Andrew?
It's a rule to sacrifice the boy on its seventeenth day or seventeenth year. The boy lived; but he would be seventeen in three months. That was why Papa and his team were eager to find the boy.
