บท 10: Chapter 10: Unmasking Emily
I poured over the book, determined to uncover Emily's true nature. She wasn't human, that was for sure so I decided to go through all the creatures in this book to see which one she was using the characteristics that I already noticed from her. I crossed off vampire - I would've sensed her if she was one of us. Werewolf was unlikely too; she didn't have the distinctive scent that came with the full moon besides werewolves are known for their super strength, when we were attacked, she would've been the one to save me and not vice versa.
Changelings were also ruled out; if she were one of them, that other changeling wouldn't have tried to kill her. Demons were long gone from Earth, they found earth boring so they left, many years before human civilization grew, and elves... well, they emanate magic like a beacon, unable to hide it. Plus, they were too weak to resist mind-wiping. They are smart and full of magic but super strength was one of their many weaknesses.
That left us with two possibilities: a Witch or a Shapeshifter. Both were elusive and rare, but I had to consider them. Witches were known for their cunning and magical prowess, while Shapeshifters could blend into any form. Either one could explain Emily's mysterious nature. Shape shifters and changelings are alike but not the same. Many people confuse them for each other, I fell into this category too. They have the same powers but one has more power than the other. Changelings powers are basic, they can change to any living thing they see. Their original form is monstrous, some having wings, some having only claws and some having all. They pick a human form and stay in that form to avoid being attacked by scared humans. That's their only power. Changelings are very loyal and will never attack one of their own no matter the cause. They punish their law offenders by imprisonment or banishment. They're a very intelligent species but also very mortal. Their life span is roughly a hundred to two hundred years. A shape shifter on the other hand are like the superior changelings. They hate being compared to changelings, they feel superior 'cause they are actually so if you ever mistook one for a changeling, they can literally tear you to pieces for that alone.
They are extremely aggressive creatures and have a lot of fights among themselves, they and changelings are never on good terms so they fight a lot most times about the most trivial things. They can change to anything they want, whether living things or non living things. They don't have to see something before they change, they can just draw a picture and change to it. They are very intelligent and also very dangerous. They are not super strong but any injuries they inflict on a vampire can't be healed by our healing factor. It'll just stay there and rot unless treated by other vampires.
She could be a witch too. Basically witches are humans who have access to magic. Only few humans are born with the gift. They cast spells and..., you know, witch stuff. They can be the most powerful beings in our universe if they reach their full potential that's why all supernatural beings try to kill any witch they find. If Emily was a witch then that would explain why the changeling was after her but something doesn't add up, witches, even at a young have a spell in them that don't allow them to be tracked so you could be standing next to a witch and not know it. Even the most powerful vampires can't detect a witch so how would the changeling had found her?
A shape shifter can't have their mind wiped because their mind changes as they change shape so the vampire trying to wipe their memory won't know which form's memory to wipe. Shape shifters are witty enough to hide from other creatures but so are witches.
She could be either, but which one?
"You think she's one of these?" Ava asked, distracting me from my thoughts.
I nodded. "It's possible but we need to keep digging."
We spent hours researching, comparing Emily's behavior to the characteristics of Witches and Shapeshifters. Ava pointed out that Emily's adaptability and quick thinking could be signs of a Shapeshifter, while I argued that her intuition and empathy hinted at Witchcraft. There were reasons why Emily could be any of the two creatures that we suspected her to be so we were stuck in a loop. Just going back and forth.
Then suddenly, I had an idea.
"All supernatural beings have a weakness." I started. "As well as shape shifters and witches..."
"I think I know what you're driving at."
"Just as vampires are scared of stakes and werewolves of wolfsbane..."
"And elves are scared of fire..."
"Shape shifters and witches will have what scares them too."
"Now we know exactly what to look for." Ava replied as she flipped the pages of the book. "Shapeshifters are scared of salt water, it burns their skin while witches are scared of ..."
"What?"
"It's a long list. You know witches are basically humans." Ava said. "Well humans with magic, they're vulnerable to everything a typical human is vulnerable to. Are you sure you want to use these weaknesses to see what Emily could be? She could really get hurt and besides even if these weaknesses were to weaken her it could also mean that she is a human. All humans are vulnerable to these things."
"We still have to try. If we don't, we'll never get the answers we're searching for."
"I have a better idea." Ava said. "Using her weaknesses on her could actually kill her. There's something else we could try."
"What do you have in mind?"

บท 11: Chapter 11: Waiting for a Slip-Up
"I don't think using their weaknesses is a good idea," Ava said, shaking her head. "It's too risky. We could hurt her. I propose we follow her. Just hang around her until she uses her powers for something. Even the tiniest spark will be enough to find out what she is."
"But she's trying to hide her identity," I countered. "She won't just use her powers in front of us."
Ava smiled knowingly. "All supernatural creatures have one thing in common: they can't go days without using their powers. They'll feel caged if they don't. So, we'll wait for her to slip up. Sooner or later she'll have to use her powers."
I nodded, understanding. "Something like a stake out?"
"Do you have to liken everything we do to a movie?"
"Yes I do."
And that's exactly what we did. I watched her closely in class, trying not to draw attention to myself. I observed her every move, every gesture, every expression. But she seemed perfectly normal, just a typical high school student. Nothing out of the ordinary except her mesmerizing eyes, beautiful lips and sparkling hair. Okay I'm going out of point here. What I'm trying to say is that she's a beautiful girl, that's not what I was actually trying to say. Well so far, everything seems normal but I also seem normal until you get into my house so...
Well as normal as a vampire pretending to be a human can get.
In the cafeteria, I sat elsewhere, giving her space. I pretended to focus on my lunch, all the while keeping an eye on her. She chatted with her friends, laughing and smiling, but I still saw nothing out of the ordinary. This girl is really good at hiding her powers because how can someone go a whole day without using their powers? Well I guess that's just one of the many things that she's good at.
After school, Ava and I followed her from a safe distance, tracking her movements around town. We trailed behind her as she ran errands, went shopping, and met up with friends. But she never once exhibited any supernatural abilities. If I didn't have concrete proof of her not being human I would've believed that she was human too.
But do I actually have concrete proof? Could she really just be a normal human with information about us?
Damn... This girl is so good at hiding her powers that I'm even starting to question if she could actually be a supernatural being too.
Finally, she arrived home and went inside. We climbed onto her roof, careful not to make a sound, and peeked through her window. She was studying, oblivious to our presence.
Night fell, hours passed, and we remained still, waiting for something – anything – to happen. To be honest I wanted to go home. This stake out was pointless. Nothing's going to happen.
"Let's go home." I whispered to Ava. "She's human. There's nothing to see here."
"Patience my dear brother. Supernatural activity is more prominent at night."
"So you knew this and made us wait the whole day?!" I asked, my whisper now showing a bit of anger. "We could've just waited till night fall and climbed here."
"You were the one who wanted a stake out and how you got it. So what are you complaining about now?" Ava replied, her voice still as calm as ever.
"Fine." I said. "We'll wait."
A few minutes later Emily's parents came home, and she greeted them warmly. I was starting to think we'd never see her powers in action.
"How was school today love?"
"It was fine dad. I didn't see the subject throughout today. It was just distant." Emily replied. "What should I do?"
"What do you mean by you did not see the subject?!" Her dad replied. "I sent you there for one reason and you can't even do that?! I thought the subject was into you. What happened? Did you upset it?"
"No...no I didn't." Emily said. "What should I do dad?"
"Make sure you meet the subject tomorrow. I don't care how you do it. We need to find out everything we can about it and it's family." Her dad said. "Our lives depend on it."
"Yes dad. I won't fail you again."
"Good." The father proceeded to leave the room but suddenly stopped in his tracks. "I smell something dead. There's something in this vicinity! Find it and kill it."
Emily and her mom rushed out of the room to find the dead thing that was in the vicinity. Maybe a rat died. Wait... Aren't vampires undead? Oh my God! We were the ones that they were smelling.
Sigh... and I thought I smelt good. So much for deodorant.
"Ava we have to get out of here. They've noticed our presen..." I looked around and didn't see Ava. "...and she's gone. What the fuck is wrong with this girl?! How could she leave me here alone? I have to stab her a few times when I get back."
I jumped down from the room and started running for the gate. I ran as fast as I could. No I can't get caught by humans... Shapeshifters... Witches. Well whatever they are. Not again...
I was so close to the door when I saw Emily standing in front of me.
"E...Ethan?"
"Yes I'm the one. Look I'm sorry I entered your compound without permission. I wanted to know if you're as beautiful in your house as you are at school. It won't happen again, I promise. Please just help me get out here."
"I'm sorry Ethan... But I can't let you leave. You know too much."
"W-what do you mean?"
"I'm sorry about this. I really am." Emily moved at the speed of light and just held my arm and everywhere went dark.
Yes! Even though I'm unconscious and might be strapped to a machine in an abandoned factory somewhere where they might run tests on me, I now know that Emily is not human. I was right about her not being a human. One thing that exceeds my fear of the unknown is my love of being right about something.
I don't know how this information about Emily will help me as I'm unconscious and all...
Emily grabbed my leg and in seconds, her mom and dad appeared in front of me. I was drowsy but I could see some things going on.
"The subject came here on it's own?"
"Yes. He did." Emily replied.
"Perfect."
This was the last thing I heard before everywhere went dark again.
