บท 38: 38 - Little Tweaks

I tied my bow as Henriette taught me to. It was hard, but with a little patience and determination, I managed to do it. I was alone, in my room. Henriette had asked me if I needed her help, but I refused. I would hate it if she caught me hiding the Dragon's Breath of Charles de Gaulle.

I looked in the mirror one last time. The last time before we set up our plan, uncover the policeman's identity, and kill him in front of a handful of spectators. My reflection's expression was deeply scared. Afraid to shoot on a policeman, added with fear of being caught by the people watching me.

I took a deep breath and tried to relax. Everything will be fine. At least, Xiao was here to support me in this hard challenge. Once I'll be done, I won't fear being brought back to North Korea.

Yeah. It'll be okay.

When I came out of the room, I saw Xiao and his curly pink hair from the back, discussing with someone through the back door. I went checking on him when someone held my hand.

I jumped in fear.

It was just Bienvenue and Deborah. Their little game scared me to death. I was already nervous, so they shouldn't be adding to this pressure!

"Song! Have you seen it? There are so many people watching us it's unbelievable!" Bienvenue's eyes shone like bright stars.

Deborah crossed her arms, trying to look smugger than her lady friend. She wasn't fooling anyone though, as she was suppressing a huge grin, "There's tons of journalist there! Even Prime Minister Zheng Tai will watch us dance today. Ah, we did it, girls! The Opéra of Paris will finally acknowledge us!"

T...Tons off people? Journalists? Why did they have to come today, of all days? And If Zheng Tai was here, It was obviously not because he wanted to see us dance. I didn't tell them that, though. Being stressed didn't mean I had to stress other people. I smiled it off, trying to appear like a non-mobster.

As the girls squealed about our huge audience, the sounds of cameras snapping caught my attention. It came from our damaged backdoor. The person Xiao was talking to was being snapped by paparazzi.

That meant it could only be Zheng Tai, the Prime Minister. The King and his old Queen? Not a good combination.

I said to the girls I'd stay a little bit backstage, before joining Xiao.

As soon as they were gone, I could understand Xiao's words perfectly, "... You have to own your mistakes once and for all, Tai."

Zheng Tai came closer to my lover's face, and spout in hate, "Listen you little dipshit. If I read tomorrow, one single journal-title that ties me to the Dragon's Breath, I swear that I'll destroy your little organization you dare to call the 'Firm'."

Xiao didn't seem to be shaken by that threat, so Zheng Tai elevated it. He stroked the scar on his cheek, "And I'll make personally sure your smile is getting longer."

Xiao paled in terror, as Zheng Tai returned to the paparazzi, speaking in a loud voice this time."Yes, I think the Nation has to help local artists..."

That son of a bitch! I gritted my teeth and joined Xiao, "How dare he say things like that when he..."

He put his hands on my mouth and closed the door, "I know, it's not fair. He just doesn't want conspiracy theories to trail him down."

"He's blackmailing you. That's the only trick that weak guy has up his sleeve to survive."

"Don't do anything risky. I forbid you to hurt him on my behalf. It's my problem, and I'll deal with it myself. So... Keep calm. Please. Do it for me."

His choice was not understandable. Just because he threatened Xiao, I could feel the rage burning hot in my veins. But Xiao really wanted me to stay calm. He was a capable man, and he could shoot a person in the head if he wanted. Actually, I couldn't understand why he let this horrible man scar him like that. But that was a conversation for another day, so I composed myself.

"Okay. For you."

He smiled. He looked at me tenderly, a hint of sadness flashing in his eyes. He was physically stronger than the Prime Minister, that was certain. But it seemed like Zheng Tai possed something more abstract and more powerful than a mere submachine gun; he had the mind of the people he dominated.

If I could ease this invisible burden Zheng Tai crushed him with, I would gladly do it.

Xiao took out his hand on his lips, "Can I have a hug?"

This kind of favor took me by surprise. I wanted to help him by lashing my rage on Zheng Tai. And, now I was asked to... I blushed immediately,

No. It was okay. Wei Xiaojian was my boyfriend now. And hugging was the kind of thing lovers here in Paris did all the time. I could do this. I spread out my arms, ready for the demonstration of affection.

He hugged me tight, using all his strength to hold me in his arms. Poor Xiao. He was probably scared right now. I couldn't see his face right now, but I was sure that sadness was painted all over his face again.

Someone opened the door leading backstage, "Look! A cute ballerina and a beautiful man in smoking! You two look like a straight couple!" The owner of the voice was probably Jieung-yong if I guessed by his tasteless comments. He burst out laughing.

We separated ourselves, interrupting the hug to give Jieung-yong side-eyes. The young man didn't pay attention to our annoying glances as he was focusing on David.

He didn't laugh at his joke. He didn't even smile or react to him in any way. David bowed in front of us, "Good luck for the gun scene you're going to play out later. There's a lot of people with cameras out there. The Firm firmly believes you'll be able to carry out the mission nonetheless."

The stress I managed to forget until now came back to me all at once. I held Xiao's arms tight, trying to glean a tiny bit of his strength and support, just like he did seconds ago.

Jieung-yong, unhappy to be ignored, threw nonchalantly the precious gem at me, "It'll shine on the policeman during the gun scene as you wanted. Don't miss it."

I nodded, and David joined the main stage back, without caring to know if his comrade was following him or not."

"David! I'm sorry. I won't joke like that again, so come back!" Jieung-yong said as he ran behind David.

Xiaojian and I stared at each other, surprised by the fact the 's' word was pronounced in Jieung-yong's mouth. A miracle.

After all that fuss, I hid the gem loosely on one of the neon lights and joined the main stage too.
