I grabbed the helmet and put it on my head.
"You can't have too much protection." The Puma threw spare bullets at me and I hid them in my pocket.
The Tai Clan and the Firm's members froze on the floor, like frozen sticks. We were slashing our throats four seconds ago, and now the two clans stared at the hole as big as the eye of the hurricane as one unified confused people.
Pretty strange view. But understandable.
The person above this eye of the hurricane was provoking the Underground World.
Boss gave me a nod. She chose me to avenge this provocation.
I wiped off the sweat living between my nape and my helmet, "Don't put too much hope in me. I just got back from that prison, you know."
Boss snapped her fingers, and the White Boss clapped his hands.
David, AKA the Puma, and the new turquoise Queen held me up to the high entrance of the wall.
I wouldn't have any compassion then. Unlucky me.
The black opening invited me to a party I didn't want to be a part of. There surely was a light at the end of the hole, but it would be impossible to guess without knowing it beforehand. Alone, the artificial light of the Firm made the edge of the rocks shine.
"You sure they are still here? Because if it's the case, I'm going to die. I can't see anything."
The Puma threw me in the hole, "Bro, me neither."
I fell back on pointed edge rocks. I cut myself and screamed, "Guys? I'm going to get killed either way."
No response: Fifty stares.
So, here I was gone on my fours, swearing at each of my steps. I got pretty high, to the point I couldn't see any of the mobsters' faces. As I was climbing the tunnel, a broken cable scorched my leg.
"For fuck, sake this is…!" A noise resounded in my ears. But, that wasn't from me. I examined the black rocks on my left and my right.
The right stack of rocks moved. Was I having a hallucination? Or did it gained consciousness?
"Huh? Are you kidding me?"
The second after that, they punched me in the face.
I didn't have the time to understand anything. One second earlier I was grabbing pointy rocks, one second later I was falling into the void.
The…void?
Fuck.
I hammered my fist against the walls and curbed myself. The friction scratched off my skin so hard blackish-red liquid poured out of my fingers. No need to be a genius to know what it was. I clenched my teeth in pain.
I panted. What a stupid idea to give me this mission! The others had to pay me to double for this.
In my peripheral vision, the dark mass moved again. I inhaled and raised my head. My opponent was standing, wearing a bulletproof jacket and a helmet like me. Whatever was my Boss's intuition, those were correct. I'd feel defenseless without my protections.
Them, unlike me, knew how to find balance in the dark tunnel. And the super-soldier mastered the art of fleeing from human sight.
They had a dagger. That was what I received in my visor.
What if they had broken it? My eye socket would have been completely pierced with that much power.
Drops of sweat ran on my face and soon glued my strands of hair to my forehead.
I'm afraid, I thought.
Soon, I could smell the odor of sweat and distress locked in my helmet.
But if I go back down now, if I fail now, I...I will go back to...
Tears formed at the corners of my eyes, but I didn't allow them to fall. I was stronger than this.
I took out my gun from my pocket and dashed toward my assailant. I lifted the weapon like I would have done with a hammer and aimed it at the head.
The super soldier blocked it with their knife. At my contact, their teeth clenched.
Now I was seeing big globes staring at me from the visor. I saw my reflection in a blue filter, and I saw the hate they had for me. No, not for me. For the Underground World.
I let my attention falter, giving them the occasion of punching me in the belly before running away.
I held my stomach and followed them on all three.
As my skin became stripes of flesh and blood under the rocks, I accelerated, "I won't give up before you tell me whom you're working for!"
They said nothing and ran faster.
Our little race brought us into the light at the end of the tunnel. Paris became clearer as we climbed more and more.
The sun hit my eyes. I stopped to pause when, for the first time, they rested from their flight.
I became tired. They became tired. It was the end, and we wouldn't be climbing higher. If I didn't catch them now, I would have failed and I wouldn't survive this time.
With the last leap, I jumped on them.
They turned around and gave me a second punch.
The pain made me grasp their arm, "Argh!"
They hit me again and again until I was letting it go.
They hit my freshly nourished belly. I wanted to vomit. I…couldn't...
Tearing up a piece of their clothing, I fell again into the emptiness.
Gravity took care of throwing me from several meters high. I didn't have the strength to fight back against her. I would have loved to scream. Or to shout for help. I would have loved to.
Buzzing noises and voices became pieces of sentences as I fell closer to the Underground World.
Boss's voice, firm, and full of expectations.
David short sentences, agreeing to her orders.
The big fuss of the Tai Clan and the Firm.
In a millisecond, I went from half hearing them to being entirely engulfed by them. I fell to the ground, but something softened my fall.
"Song-ho! Shit! Warn us before, at least!"
Ah. Wei.
I would have gone away from him if I had the strength. That wasn't an exaggeration. It wasn't particularly ego-boosting to have Boss and the White Boss above you, laughing.
"That's enough!" The no-reflex Queen made me sit near him and examined my wounded hand, "You lost them, right?"
Everything hurt. I was tired. The only thing I had in the hand was that piece of clothing. I opened my fist and it fell on the floor.
The two bosses stopped laughing immediately. Their eyes widened.
My eyes traveled on the subject of their fright and recognized letters. 'French secret police'. It didn't sweat in my face anymore, but salt tears ran down my face this time.
Boss was the first one to react, "We have to get rid of them."
Everybody shared confused glances.
