บท 2: 02 - The Helping Lady

The helicopter's propellers turned at high speed, prompting the vehicle to fly in the air like a bug, avoiding any attack our assailants could try on us.

I approached my face against the glass of the windows. The other corporals, alarmed by the explosions, decided to shoot us. They used all the bullets that they could, but when we reached ten meters, they just gave up. That was a beautiful sight, to be surrounded by gunshots. It looked like a ceremony requiering fireworks. In France, they celebrated the day of their freedom by blasting colourful fires into the sky. That day, ironically, his ennemies were celebrating his freedom.

I closed my eyes and took a big breath. Finally, we were safe. I released the tension in my shoulders.

"Welcome on board."A feminine voice with a familiar-sounding accent said.

I turned my head to the pilot. She had combed her hair so thoroughly that no strands dared to fly. Under her pilot's helmet and her security jacket, not a single fold showed up on her white shirt or her black skirt. She had glasses on her eyes and kept watching the dashboard with laser focus. So focused she seemed to be frozen like a statue. People's life deserved that much focus after all. Contrary to her intimidating demeanor, her tone of voice was relatively warm and welcoming.

Who was this woman? And why was she rescuing them? She was a puzzle screaming to be solved. I didn't know how to talk to her.

"Thank you for your generosity and your courage, Miss."

"Don't mention it, because I'm receiving way more than I give. You know, karma..."

"What do you mean?

She tilted her head towards behind her, "There are bread and water behind. It should be enough for the trip."

Lee Jieung-yong walked towards the closet, opened it, and discovered a huge stack of pastries, baguettes, and lots of water bottles. On the right, security jackets were stacked, alongside with bulletproof vests and parachutes. On the left, there were rifles, semi-automatic guns, and knives. Damn, she was prepared af heck ! How much thoughts was put in this operation ?

Jieung-yong took two baguettes and two water bottles and gave me one of each.

A baguette. The symbol of France and of its breathtaking capital. I was almost too happy to hold one in my hand. The bread's weight wasn't heavy on my hands. It was golden outside and white inside. It felt like a rock at first but eating it revealed its softness. It smelled like a walk at boulevard Haussmann.

Jieung-yong frowned, "You have a problem? I know it doesn't look like anything we eat every day, but if you want to survive I advise you to..."

My throat tightened, "It's not it! It's just..."I turned to the woman who saved us. "What's your name? And why coming from France? I can't believe you're doing it without any purpose.

"Ah, my accent has been discovered. Yes, I come from Paris. Wait until we arrive in France. Then I'll answer all your questions. I promised."

Paris...

Going through the french boundaries...

My heart melted. Memories of entire nights spent dreaming of Paris overwhelmed me. Tchaïkovski's magical melodies played with flutes. My mother's Grands Jeté from another time, immortalized with low-quality cameras. Dancing on pointe shoes to replicate his mother's talent. Paris... This is where we were going? To Paris? The cradle of the Opéra and ballet?

How lucky I was, "You're a lifesaver."

I ate my bread enthusiastically letting my joy show outside. The boy near me narrowed his eyes at my enthusiasm as food went down on his stomach and gave my strength back.

"Miss," Jieung-yong asked. "I wanted to ask, do you happen to have other weapons inside your closet?"

She nodded.

"Is it too much to ask to fly to Manpo and save my mother the same way you saved us?"

"That's a Revolutionnaire thinking!" Jieung-yong said.

"I'm just loving my mom enough I don't want her to be hurt, you know."

The woman closed her eyelids and I would swear she was sleeping if I didn't know she was thinking about my question, "Ok. Let's go." She changed her direction.

"Don't worry Mom, we'll live together in the country of our dreams."

After a small trip through the sky, we reached Manpo, at the camp my mother was. I thought the military service's camp Jieung-yong and me lived for a while was the bare minimum. However, when I saw where my mom was held captive, I reconsidered; we were bathing in opulence. Her hands were attached behind her back, and she stood on a wooden stool. A rope danced above her head.

She was going to be hanged.

That afternoon was a freezy cold for October, and my mother only wore an oversized T-shirt in the snow. Like Jieung-yong, her body was full of blue and red wounds. She spat on the camera in front of her. A soldier near her slapped her while another one wiped the screen.

"But... what the fuck are they doing? They're filming her?" I said.

Jieung-yong looked with disdain, "The chief and his prime minister are enjoying her death, seating comfortably behind their computer."

"Those monsters." I closed my fist in boiling rage.

Soldiers (those were more experienced) walked around each side of her prison. My mother was escorted by those beasts.

"Miss, you think you can explode them without touching my Mom?"

She closed her eyes again for a few seconds, "That would be problematic. I will touch them, but she burns in the process."

"Then how do we do it?"

Jieung-yong touched my shoulder, "It'd be better if you go down there and save your mother with your own hands."

I pushed back his hand from myself, "Are you crazy? I'm gonna get killed if I go down!"

"So, you're telling me that's it's okay to avoid death when it's you, but when it's your mom you hesitate?"

"No, I..."

"She's gonna get hanged if you don't do anything. Chihye's son, do what you should do. Save this country. Don't disappoint us."

He was begging with his eyes to not disappoint him. I didn't have any comeback. But dying without a fight, that was out of the question.

"Fuck, whatever!" I opened the closet and, and put a bulletproof vest on me.

The pilot opened the door and my hair flew everywhere because of the wind and the propellers. I held the door.

Jieung-yong put a semi-automatic gun and a grenade on my jacket, "Be worthy of belonging in her bloodline."

He slapped me on the back and I could have fallen on the white ground. That crazy guy! It wasn't the time to break my spine!

Miss Savior and threw the rope ladder again through the open door.

Soldiers noticed us and were aiming their weapons at us. Jieung-yong pushed me.
