บท 29: When she returned (12)

"I'm having a rather productive day and decided to answer your call. What do you want?" Cora says, dangerously. "I want Jaxon back."

She glares at me. "There are two reasons I can't do that. Number one, he left you. He chose to leave you because he felt forced out. Believe it or not, he was doing what he did for you."

I feel a sharp pang of guilt. "And number two?" I ask, after a moment. She sighs. "And number two. Did you not see that lightning? He's gone. I'm sorry. I truly am. I know how hard it is to lose someone as great as him. I, unfortunately, lost him years ago though."

I fall to my knees. I didn't think she'd actually do that. Not to her own son. Yet here we are. My eyes fill with tears. "He- he's dead?" I ask, my voice breaking. "I'm sorry. I did what I had to."

I look up at her deep red eyes. "Sorry? Sorry isn't good enough! You murdered your own son and- 'sorry'?"

"I can see you need to grieve so, I did originally have to talk about something but I'll give you your time and come back tomorrow."

I stand. Tears still stream down my face but they're no longer coming out. "You think you can just kill someone and get away with it? You won't. I'll kill every last one of your minions to get to you if I have to."

Cora smiles a little. "I'd like to see you try. Honestly honey, you overestimate yourself."

The void fades into the world around me. Right now the world around me is a cabin with overgrown vines everywhere in the middle of nowhere. But then again, is there anywhere that isn't in the middle of nowhere anymore? I slowly stand and walk into the first room, and then to the door, and then outside. I try my best to retrace my steps but I didn't pay much attention to my landmarks on the way here.

I walk around for what must've been hours before finally finding camp. I stand in the woods a little ways away but I can hear people and I see parts of the camp through the thick trees. I take a deep breath and go into the camp. It's still morning but the camp is very alive. On the general's side, there's several small houses in neat rows. On our side there's a nearly finished large house with four boys working on it.

I walk slowly into the house and go inside as quietly as I can. I quickly grab my blanket, bag, five arrows, and a bow which is leaning against a wall. I then look around the room and notice Willow. I grab him and put him into my bag too. I put everything, except my bow which I hold, in my bag.

I walk to the door, which is just a large piece of wood on wooden, squeaky hinges, but before I can even touch the door handle it swings open, nearly hitting me. In the door is Graham and Jordan. Graham grins. "Oberon! I thought you weren't coming back! I wanted to go find you but Jordan said I should give you your time."

"Don't worry. I'll probably come back. I doubt I can survive out there on my own for long. Unfortunately." I say. "What do you mean?" Graham asks. He notices my backpack and his face turns into a mixture of sad and worried.

"You're leaving? Oberon, if this is about-" he pauses, knowing if he spoke of Jaxon he might not get a chance to talk to me before I leave. "I was only saying what I thought was right."

"Well it wasn't. And yes, I'm leaving for a couple days." I begin walking to the door. "I can't talk about this right now."

I walk out the door but Jordan grabs my arm before I can get too far out. I pull away hard. "Don't touch me." I say. My own voice startles me. It's dark and filled with venom.

"Oberon, he could've brought this whole place to the ground. Why don't we go back inside and talk?" Jordan says. "I told you, I'm not talking about that right now. Trust me, you don't want me to talk about that right now."

Graham talks next. "Jaxon will probably come back when he's ready and even if he doesn't, he's tough, he'll be fine."

"No he's not."

They both go silent and stare blankly. "Did you not hear me? He's not coming back, Graham. I sat there and begged you to help me, so that this didn't happen but you didn't. You let him run to his death."

"Oberon, I'm sure he'll be back. I'm sure be fine. I wanted- I wanted to protect you."

"No. You don't understand. I don't need you protection! Didn't you learn that the first time? The first time that ended with you in jail for my crimes when Kayden could've just gotten me out with no problem? It doesn't matter what you tell yourself, what you tell me I will never forgive you this time."

I shove past Jordan and Graham and head into the woods without looking back. Why should I? They killed Jaxon. Right now all I need is to get away before I do something I regret- or worse- I won't regret it.
