บท 4: Death At Midnight- Part Three

CLANG!!

THUD!!

"Useless! All of you!!"

"Sir!!" Sir Dante's face was twisted and his pale ivory skin became as white as a flock of sheep. The commander had just ruthlessly decapitated the head of one of the knights - Sir Tobbas'. He saw the lifeless beheaded body of the man collapse into the pothole filled with rainwater with a loud spattering sound and the dreadful presentation of his head rolled to his side. The rest of the knights in the same armor as Sir Dante genuflected all at once, revealing in orotund voices at the sight of the terror "Spare our lives, Sir. We deeply fought bravely as men"

"You think your wasteful life matters to me! Must I spare your lives? Must I?" The crisp and toneless words of the disembodied commander echoed inside the dark alley. One could deter the anger, pang, and disappointment laced in the tone of these words. Sir Dante did and could not help feeling the cold slither to his skin. Even in the dark, he could flawlessly see the sharpness of the commander's reckless sword flickering with blood as each drops spilled down the water, staining the pureness.

He heard the commander growl out passively, "If my men can't show loyalty to their homeland. How are you vassals of the King? How on earth did any of you succeed in the code of chivalry? None of you are qualified! You are dead as a log of wood" and gritted his teeth. He was tired of expectations. Frustrated by the lack of wisdom of these fools. How unfortunate!

Two knights behind Sir Dante exchanged glances with a look of mendaciousness. Sir Robert was with his head eased to the pool of blood on the ground. He pondered over a thought. The raven-haired squire was smiling cheekily all over. One of the two knights, Sir Osias, mustered his gutsiness as he proceeded forward and opined confidently, "Commander, the problem isn't putting trust in the country. The problem is putting our faith in you. We waited three hours under the pouring rain and yet, you are returning now. Doesn't that make you incompatible? I think so"

Both Sir Dante and Sir Robert became gobsmacked by the sudden bravery of this knight. He was so foolish.

Thunder rumbled in the sky after the brave knight's diction. Next to Sir Tobbas' headless body was the head of the brave knight rolling to the side as a companion in hell. Eerily to say that the two dead bodies were the same men who had bad-mouthed the commander in his absence. The same people calling the commander, irresponsible and immature.

What a coincidence! Or is it?

Next, a pool of blood covered the street where no witnesses prevailed, aside from the people inside the alley. Thankfully, the passage was between two abandoned buildings, and not a single fly was out as the rain poured.

"Sir" Dante called, however, the commander pointed his bloodied sword to his throat, causing the knight to cringe back in fear.

"I'd better have Philip's head before dawn, otherwise you'll be next" The commander announced coldly.

"But sir, we-"

SLASH!!

"Sir... " Sir Dante went stiff with his heart jumping against his chest, and his blood failed to reach his heart the moment that sharp dagger had passed his face - luckily. If he had moved even for an inch, he was certain the blade could have turned him into a blind person, considering the fast reflex of the angered man.

"If you ask me, Sir. It is impossible to get to the General unless we initiate another war" Sir Robert took up the stake to speak. Amongst all, he was renowned as the first knight to have only spoken five lines to the commander. Even though he was dazed he was speaking. He withered at the cowardness in Sir Dante's eyes but continued withal, "That man must have gone into hiding, Sir. I bet he wouldn't even dare show himself to the three most important necessities in his life"

The commander sheathed his sword and appealed to blandly "Speak. They are?"

Sir Robert cleared his throat lazily. He said "Money, Women, and Sex"

The commander scoffed "Such an extravagant life of a man!"

"If his head can't be brought right now, then bring me the heads of those traitors, Sir Dante. You don't want to be the next" Was the demand. "The king asks for victory, not failure," The commander told them. He grunted.

Outraged, he subconsciously pulled the reins of the horse, a little harsher. The horse squealed in protest. Quick to fathom the red temper of the mare, the commander took his hand to the crinet covering his horse's manes, as he patted on them, softly. Be that as it may, the horse squealed once more, and in no time, a huff was stung to the back of the commander. The horse had raised its tail to slap the commander. Choicelessly acknowledging his punishment, the commander took his hand off the horse and sighed.

Such a hot-tempered animal!

"Bring back the traitors or never return" Were the last sentence of the commander before leaving.

Sir Dante darted his eyes at the two bodies and only ran a distance away from them as he crouched down to pile out his vomit into the flooded stone cobbles. He was feeling sick.

'He is never going to spare me. I shouldn't be in the devil's turd, preferably under his clemency'

Sir Dante's face becomes drained of blood and vomited more out, feeling his guts wrenched.

"You shouldn't have led the troops today. They are a bunch of cowards! Surprisingly, you are too" Sir Robert commented behind with his usual blank expression, as he linked his eyes with the bodies. After Dante, he was the other trustworthy man of the commander. These men that were killed topped the commander in age but were smaller in rank compared to him. He understood the levels of their egos. However, he was more annoyed by the sarcasm of the young lad, looking secretive, and by his previous disrespectful words.

"I can't take the sight of blood" Sir Dante refuted.

Sir Robert and the young man exchanged a look of displeasure for one another. Being the first to break the contact, Sir Robert retorted "Ay! Funny enough that this is coming from the mouth of a man who has killed thousands"

At that exact time, they heard some voices outside the alley. Making sure the bodies had been taken away and were hidden, Sir Dante eavesdropped on the conversation of the guards carrying two fire touches in their hands.

"We take the bodies to the forbidden forest," One of the guards told.

"Ay! We will get killed, must we do as the lord says? Ditch the bodies here and save our souls from being feasted on by these creatures. He doesn't have to know anything" The other guard who turned out to be terrified opposed intensely.

Sir Dante wiped his lips as his eyes followed the men in heavy weapons while they carried sacks on their shoulders. He knitted his brows as the blurry rain couldn't make him get a clear view of these men.

'Does the council - I shouldn't meddle in their business' Giving commands to the remaining three knights, the alley momentarily became barren and rain continued to shower the town, endlessly.
