บท 26: A mother's worry
Lu Yu knew that Lei Qian turned crazy when it came to Bai Meiyue but obviously he didn't expect that Lei Qian would actually ask him to stop the car and walk over to the small restaurant where Bai Meiyue had just finished ordering her meal.
Was he not worried about being taken as a stalker? Seeing how confidently Lei Qian was walking, Lu Yu was certain that the man did not even take this matter into consideration.
Lu Yu shook his head before slipping out of the car. He didn't want his boss and friend to be beaten until his face turned the size of a pig and he could only follow him; in case Bai Meiyue caught them, he would lie for Lei Qian and back him up.
However, Lu Yu obviously thought too much. Bai Meiyue had no intention to pay attention to anyone. She was so hungry that she asked the boss to serve the dishes one by one instead of bringing all the dishes together.
The boss was also happy to oblige, as it was quite stressful for him to cook everything as quickly as possible.
With Bai Meiyue telling him that he could serve one dish at a time, the boss was obviously very relieved.
He quickly fished out a giant bowl of rice and pork belly before delivering it to Bai Meiyue's table.
Bai Meiyu wasn't polite either; the second the bowl was placed on her table, she started eating. The chewy, greasy, and flavourful meat with white rice grains brought tears to Bai Meiyue's eyes. Ten years! It had been more than ten years since she last tasted such a good thing.
Once the apocalypse began, animals started to mutate. With the mutations of animals, their meat also became tough and chewy. It was really hard to bite and eat the meat of the mutated beasts, not to mention it didn't taste good.
Back then, she used to tell Bai Cai about the things that she liked to eat. Her son, who never got a chance to eat such good things, would often wish that he too wanted to eat these things but with the world turning upside down, Bai Meiyue never got the chance to make this small wish of her son true.

She soon finished her rice bowl and started on eel noodles. When she was half way through the meal, her phone rang and Bai Meiyue paused. She wanted to first finish her meal and then pick up the call but as soon as she saw the caller id displayed on the screen, her expression changed.
"Bai Meiyue!"
As soon as she answered the call, her brother, Bai Jixuan's, a loud voice came from the other side.
"Brother," Bai Meiyue called Bai Jixuan with a voice filled with guilt. When she recalled how she had never once gone to look for her two brothers and mother, Bai Meiyue wished she could beat her past self, bloody.
Her brothers did not give up looking for her and what did she do?
"Jixuan," a reprimanding voice scolded Bai Jixuan. "Are you talking to Meiyue or are you trying to scare her into hiding? Why are you screaming so loudly?"
There was a sound of scuffling and soon Bai Meiyue heard the voice of her eldest brother, "Meiyue, are you alright?"
As soon as Bai Meiyue heard the steady voice of Bai Zhan, her eyes turned red. She was no longer the same cry baby but upon hearing the voice that she had missed for so long, she couldn't help but cry lightly, "Brother Zhan, I am—I am not fine at all."
She remembered how she was all alone for ten years and despite so many people relying on her, no one asked if she was alright. They only worried if she could lead the team to collect resources or not.
Only her elder brothers and mother cared enough to worry about her but by the time she realised this, it was too late.
Bai Zhan heard her sniffle and sob, and his heart started to ache. He and his family lived in a small countryside and did not have a stable internet connection.
And thus, they had no idea that such a thing happened to Bai Meiyue. It was only when a college student who lived in the capital city returned and told them what happened with Bai Meiyue did they find out that the scumbag father of them had used Bai Meiyue as his cash cow since she was a child!
It was only then did they realise why Bai Qingshi put those conditions in front of their mother and asked her to never look for Bai Meiyue. If not, he would fight and take custody of the two of them as well.
And as Bai Meiyue grew up, she also started to stray clear off their path, thus none of them contacted her.
Who would have thought that the next time they heard about Bai Meiyue, they would hear such shocking news!
Their mother, Yun Wanning, had been crying nonstop for three hours. She kept blaming herself for not fighting tooth and nail with Bai Qingshi; if she had known that Bai Qingshi had such sinister thoughts in his heart, she would have never let him take her daughter away.
After all, how could she believe that a tiger would eat his own children? But only now did she realise that Bai Qingshi was not a tiger. He was a beast!
"Meiyue!" Yan Wanning heard her daughter cry and immediately took the phone from her son before coaxing Bai Meiyue, "Yueyue, don't cry. Mom is here; I will bring you justice, don't worry. Even if mother has to sell all her land, she will fight that bastard and this time I will sue him until he rots in prison!"
When Bai Meiyue heard her mother's words, she couldn't help it anymore and started crying.
