บท 1: Chapter One

I look out of the window and watch the rain pour down, bashing against the glass. I find it soothing; I'd always preferred stormy weather over sunny days. I just love staring out the window and listening to the rain as I get lost in my own head; it helps me escape reality and finally feel free. You see I'm kind of like a prisoner in my own home. I'm not allowed outside or else I would be grounded with nothing to do but stare myself into desolation.

"Hannah," my mother scolded behind me, her voice making my soul leave my body as quickly as snapping your fingers. "I've been calling you for the last 5 minutes. Dinners ready." Turning around to face my mother. I mumbled a simple sorry, not wanting to be punished.. I watch as my mother swiftly turned around and walked out of my room. Letting out a heavy sigh I started to follow her out and descend down the stairs.

My room was nothing special in the slightest. It was bleak and small with a white wooden single bed at the far right hand corner as you would come in the door; and facing the bed was a white wooden wardrobe with a desk in the left hand corner as you came in the door. It was white with a pink chair tucked neatly underneath it.

As I descended down the stairs, the one odd stair would squeak under my weight. I quickly take a seat at the two seated glass table and immediately start eating. My mothers roast is by far my favourite. "What is it with you and that window? I shall never understand" she said as she stuffed a roasty into her mouth.

"It's just calming, I guess." I replied, shrugging my shoulders. She was right. She could never understand what it's like, being held captive. She could never understand. Not because it was too hard to, no, but because she doesn't care.

After my mum did the bed check at 10 pm, I waited to hear the lock click in my door. When it went off, my eyes flew wide open. Jumping out of bed I walked to the window. Swiftly, I clicked the lock off and opened it. Then, I slowly and carefully scurried out. I was not too scared about falling, since I do this every night, and I never have. I climbed on to the roof and laid out on my back. I always loved coming up here and just staring at the stars; it was the only liberation I had in my life. If my mother knew I did this, she would freak out and ground me for the rest of my life.

Maybe I can, maybe I can run away. No that's a stupid idea I would never be able to survive out there, there's nothing for miles. All I could see were trees for miles. And who knows what's in that forest. But what if there was a chance I could make it? I would finally be free and I'm nearly 18; maybe it's time I leave. I pondered on the thought for a moment, if there was any chance, I would want to take it. Then it's settled. I'll leave tomorrow night after my mother does the bed check. But I'll need supplies first.

I sat up on the roof and made my way back into my room through the window, trying my best not to make too much noise. I walked over to my door, but stopped dead in my tracks. I had almost forgotten she locks it at night. Now what do I do? I could try picking it with something, maybe a nail file. I picked up the nail file that was sitting on my desk and put it in the lock. I nervously turned it and to my complete relief it unlocks, making my tense muscles instantly relax.

I open my door slowly and as quietly as possible I slip out, and into the landing with only a tiny lamp illuminating light. Tip-toeing over to the stairs, I slowly crept down them avoiding the ones I know will squeak. When I was down the stairs, I made a u-turn over to the press under the stairs and grabbed a backpack. Something orange caught my eye just as I was about to shut the press. Curious, I picked it up and realised it was a sleeping bag. I found that strange, as I hadn't gone camping a day in my life. I also grabbed a warm blanket, but to my dismay, as I pulled the blanket I knocked down something. A large crash echoed in the house. My heart dropped to the floor as I raced out of the room like a horse galloping fiercely on a race track in the race of its life. As I started to panic, I waited and listened for a couple of minutes and then heaved a sigh of relief when I didn't hear anything.

I then start walking over to the cabinets in the kitchen. Grabbing a couple cans of food like beans etc, and a couple bottles of water. I stuffed them in the bag, and then I made my way back up to my room and locked my door using the nail file again.

There was nothing stopping me from leaving right then and there. My mother could find my bag tomorrow and then I would never have a chance to escape again. But I could just leave now, there's nothing stopping you. With that in mind I walked over to my window and opened it wide enough for me to slip out unnoticed. I threw my bag out the window and watched it fall to the ground. I carefully manoeuvred myself out of the window and climbed down the drain pipe. When I was on the ground, I grabbed my bag and slung it over my shoulders. I'm ready to take on the world head first even if I'm going in blind. I started running into the woods, adrenaline pumping through my veins at 40 mph.

I'm ready to live...
