บท 69: Bringing Down The Mummy III

Crynn POV

"Ferrous! Ferrous! Sand spikes behind us!" I shouted in alarm, looking back as speeding tracking spikes flew with ease and speed after the plane. "I got it," Ferrous looked back and clenched his fist stopping the sand spikes in their tracks. And unclenched as the spikes dissipate into sand that fell down onto the earth.

"That's taken care..." A golden beam shot out from the desert below, cutting off my words as it pierced the tail of the wing. "We're going down! We're going down!" Winston pulled flaps back and readied for a hard landing in the sands. As we're about to hit the ground, the plane miraculously stopped and floated a mere inches from the ground.

I looked right to find Ferrous holding onto the plane and if vampires could sweat, he would sweat liters by now. As seen by his facial expressions, he is currently having a hard time lifting the plane. And... Drop! The body of the plane gently dropped down onto the soft sand as I unstrapped myself from the wings and went up to help the others.

"Winston, we owe you a lot and I'll make sure to compensate for the damages but for now, stay here and wait for us," O'Connell patted and shook Winston's hands. Bringing out his revolvers, checking once more for full ammunition and safeties off, he's ready to go. "We should be behind Hamunaptra and the statue with the book must be right below the back entrance!"

Evelyn approached two tall pillars standing side by side, looking quite majestic and very inviting. "The problem is, how are we going to get down to the statue? Surely we don't have the time digging for it," Evelyn looked troubled while sitting herself on one of the huge cracked stones. "Dynamite! Henderson's team has a lot of dynamite and they're still there!"

O'Connell has his eyes pinned onto some large crates by the camels. I'm guessing everyone on Henderson's crew got killed by the mummy, not a very happy ending. O'Connell then dragged back the box of dynamites, opening it to reveal red sticks with ropes leading into them each. "Is that what we're blowing?" Jonathan pointed at the small building.

A 2 meters tall and 2 meters wide structure with a circular cover in the front of it. I'm guessing that must be the back entrance or is it the back exit, doesn't matter much really. "Yes we are," O'Connell fired three dynamites at once, lobbing them across, hitting the circular entrance and dropping on the sand. "Take cover!"

O'Connell ducked as everyone did and 3 seconds later, a huge boom resounded and the sand went flying everywhere. I took a peek to see the entrance completely decimated. Old buildings never last long against explosives especially one over 3000 years old. "Let's get in," I spoke out and shined the first rays of light to have graced this staircase in quite the while.

Taking a dozen steps down, I'm directly faced with said statue containing said book. "If it's like the statue housing the other book, there's bound to be traps," O'Connell warily approached wiping the dust off the base of the statue. "Ferrous, how good are you in manipulating liquids," if I remember correctly, Henderson's men were vaporized by acid upon opening the statue.

"Good enough," Ferrous answered curtly, nodding a few times. "Great! The moment we pull the side board, will be the moment you prepare to contain the acid in the acid trap," I briefly said to Ferrous and calling O'Connell to pull the right of the board and I the left. Pull! One moment of struggling later, we successfully pulled open the damn board, launching ourselves in momentum.

Slowly, Ferrous' fingers start moving in a graceful way, almost like the actions of kneading clay. And then, from the top of the statue base, colorless fluids started flowing out, Ferrous slapped his hand to the right, and all the acid flung to the stone floor, evaporating some of it, really vicious. I inserted my hand into the opening under the statue and gripped something hard, dusty and smooth.

I grasped it out and oh what a striking book! Made almost entirely out of gold, not a hint of rust and damage on it. It's as smooth as any modern day preserved gold bar, but maybe the most magical features is that it's as light as a feather. Not just that, the royal feel the book is exuding is also enough to put weak willed people on their knees.

We're however not weak willed as no one seemed to be too fazed about this, not even Jonathan. "Great, now only thing left is to put the mummy back to the sarcophagus!" O'Connell waved his fists in the air, just need to say one verse from the book and the mummy iwll be gone, and then I will go my merry ways.

The sounds of gears turning, that ain't good. The ground below me opened up as I stepped back. It revealed a staircase and already lighted torches. "Is it just me, or is this a bit ominous," Jonathan whispered to Evelyn, though everybody could hear it. "If this path is indeed as ominous as you said, then it might just lead us to the mummy."

Whoa, that is a totally flawed remark by Evelyn. There's no way creepy passageways with torches that still light after ages long to be fine. But here I am, going down the damn staircase with 4 other damn fools after their own deaths. "Stop!" O'Connell halted in his tracks and it seems that we've arrived in a dead end.

"Is that a lever," Jonathan squinted at a small tug on the wall and pushed it up. The dead end opened up without warning, the blinding light sent us all to close our eyes. This, what is this, such light, such gold, such yellow! The room literally opened a whole new world, filled with endless mountains of gold, decorated swords all over, statues of jewels.

This whole scenery would make any Gringotts vaults look like chump change! This is what people call a true treasury of a vault!
