บท 49: Cornered

The cold, jagged peaks of Belkan territory loomed around us, bathed in the faint, eerie glow of the moon. The drones that once guarded the entrance to Zaitsev's hideout now lay in flaming pieces, their smoldering wreckage scattered across the frozen landscape. Task Force Phoenix had cleared the skies, and we were about to descend into the heart of Zaitsev's last sanctuary. This time, there was no place left for him to hide.

"Phoenix, we're clear to move in," I said, my voice steady but carrying the weight of the moment. "We breach the hideout, and this time, we're taking him down."

Viper's calm voice crackled over the comms. "Copy that. Drones are down, but the radar's picking up activity inside the mountain. Zaitsev's not done fighting."

Echo chimed in next, tactical as always. "I'm reading automated defense systems inside the facility. We'll need to neutralize them before we can get to the core."

Rook, always ready for action, cut in, her voice filled with a quiet determination. "We've come too far to let him get away. Whatever defenses he has left, we'll tear them down."

As we approached the entrance, the tension in the air was suffocating. This wasn't just another mission—this was the culmination of everything we'd fought for. The installations we had destroyed, the lives we had saved, and the battles we had won all led to this moment. Zaitsev had played his final card, and now we were about to call his bluff.

New Mission: Breach Zaitsev's Northern Hideout

Objective: Infiltrate Zaitsev's last hideout in the Belkan mountains and neutralize his final line of defenses.

Threat Level: Maximum

Reward: XP: 60,000, Zaitsev Captured

Failure Penalty: Zaitsev Escapes

The ground rumbled as we made our approach. The hideout was built into the side of the mountain, its entrance barely visible among the rocky outcroppings, but our intel had pinpointed its exact location. Inside, automated defense systems were already powering up, ready to fend off any intrusion. Zaitsev had prepared for this moment, but we had the advantage now—he was out of tricks.

"Phoenix, hit the entrance hard," I ordered, locking onto the blast doors that sealed the facility. "Let's open this place up."

Missiles streaked from our jets, slamming into the blast doors with a deafening explosion. The reinforced metal buckled under the force of the strike, sending a plume of smoke and debris into the air as the entrance crumbled. The path to Zaitsev was open.

"We're in," Viper said, his voice sharp with focus. "Ground teams, you're clear to move."

Monarch's voice crackled over the comms from the southern hideout, where Hitman Squadron had already begun their assault. "We've breached the facility. No sign of Zaitsev yet, but we're closing in."

"Copy that," I replied, my attention focused on the task ahead. "Phoenix, we need to move fast. Zaitsev won't wait for us to get comfortable."

Inside the facility, the radar lit up with hostile signatures—automated turrets, drones, and defense systems designed to repel any attack. This wasn't just a hideout—it was a fortress, built to protect the last vestiges of Zaitsev's empire.

"Defense systems online," Echo warned, her tone calm but urgent. "We need to neutralize those turrets before the ground teams can advance."

"Viper, Echo, take the lead," I ordered. "Blaze, Raven, provide cover."

New Objective: Destroy the Automated Defenses

Objective: Eliminate the automated defense systems inside Zaitsev's northern hideout and secure a path to the command center.

Reward: XP: 50,000, Defense Systems Disabled

Failure Penalty: Ground Teams Delayed

Viper and Echo surged forward, their jets diving into the narrow canyon that led into the facility. The turrets along the walls opened fire, their energy beams cutting through the night as they targeted our approach. But we had faced these kinds of defenses before, and we knew how to handle them.

"I've got lock," Viper said, his voice steady as he fired off a volley of missiles. The first set of turrets exploded in a shower of sparks, their systems shorting out as the missiles found their mark.

Echo followed close behind, her jet weaving between the incoming fire as she targeted the next set of defenses. "Taking out the northern turrets now."

The explosions rocked the facility, sending debris tumbling down the mountain as the turrets were systematically dismantled. Blaze and Raven provided cover from above, their jets circling the facility as they kept the skies clear of any additional threats.

"Turrets down," Raven said, her voice calm but fierce. "The ground teams are moving in."

Objective Complete: Defense Systems Disabled

Reward: XP: 50,000, Path to Command Center Secured

With the defenses down, the path to Zaitsev's command center was wide open. The Belkan ground forces moved in, their heavy vehicles rumbling through the narrow pass as they stormed the facility. Inside, the corridors were a maze of automated systems, but the ground teams pressed forward, cutting through the last of Zaitsev's defenses with ruthless efficiency.

"We're inside the facility," Phantom Leader called over the comms, his voice tight with focus. "Pushing toward the command center now."

My heart pounded as we closed in. Zaitsev had run out of places to hide. The hunt was almost over, and this time, there would be no escape.

"Phoenix, let's stay sharp," I said, locking onto the facility's core structure. "We take Zaitsev down, and we end this."

The ground forces breached the final doors, and the command center lay ahead—an imposing room filled with the hum of advanced technology. But it wasn't the machines that caught my attention—it was the figure standing at the center of the room, calmly watching as we closed in.

Zaitsev.

He was tall, his presence commanding despite the chaos around him. His face was a mask of cold calculation, the eyes of a man who had orchestrated death and destruction without ever flinching. But there was no fear in his expression. No desperation. Just a quiet, unsettling confidence.

"You've done well to make it this far," Zaitsev said, his voice smooth, almost amused. "But do you really think you've won?"

Phantom Leader's voice cut through the comms, filled with finality. "We've got you, Zaitsev. There's no place left to run."

Zaitsev's lips curled into a thin smile. "Run? No. I've never been running, Phantom Leader. I've been leading you. And now, the game is about to end."

Before I could react, the room shuddered violently. The walls began to tremble, and the floor beneath us shook as Zaitsev activated a final failsafe. The entire facility was rigged to explode.

"He's going to bring the whole place down on us!" Rook shouted, her voice filled with urgency.

"We need to move!" I called out, adrenaline surging through me. "Phoenix, pull out! Ground teams, evacuate immediately!"

Zaitsev remained in place, his cold eyes locked on us as the facility began to collapse around him. "Goodbye, Phoenix. You've been worthy opponents."

And with that, the screen flickered, and Zaitsev was gone. A trapdoor beneath him had opened, and he had vanished into the depths of the mountain.

New Objective: Escape the Collapsing Facility

Objective: Evacuate the facility before it collapses and regroup outside the mountain.

Threat Level: Critical

Reward: XP: 50,000, Escape Successful

Failure Penalty: Mission Failure

The walls began to crumble as explosions rippled through the facility. Smoke and fire filled the air, and the ground beneath us trembled with each detonation.

"Move, move, move!" I shouted, pulling my jet into a sharp turn as I headed for the exit. "We need to get out of here now!"

Viper and Echo followed close behind, their jets dodging falling debris as they made their escape. Blaze and Raven provided cover, their movements precise and controlled despite the chaos erupting around them.

"We're almost clear," Rook called out, her voice tense but steady. "Just a little further!"

As we burst out of the facility, the mountain erupted behind us. The explosion lit up the night sky, sending a massive shockwave rippling through the air. The entire hideout collapsed in on itself, reduced to rubble in an instant.

We had made it out, but Zaitsev had escaped again.

Objective Complete: Escape Successful

Reward: XP: 50,000, Facility Destroyed

As we regrouped in the skies above, the weight of the moment settled over me. We had come so close, but Zaitsev had slipped through our fingers once again.

"We'll find him," I said quietly, my gaze fixed on the horizon. "This isn't over yet."

The hunt would continue, but now we knew just how dangerous Zaitsev truly was. He wasn't just a mastermind—he was a predator, and we were still in his sights.
