บท 35: Time to Meet
"Em?!" Chloe knocked on the outside of Emily's apartment door.
"Coming!" She could faintly hear Emily's voice, then footsteps, and eventually saw the doorknob turning.
"Ready?" Emily asked breathlessly.
"Mhm." They joined hands and walked outside of the building and got into Chloe's car.
"I can't wait!" Emily squealed from the passenger seat of the vehicle, peeking over in Chloe's direction to see her reaction.
"Me either." She smiled, taking her eyes off of the road for a moment to plant a small kiss on Emily's shoulder.
- - About 15 minutes later - -
"Here we are..." Emily hurried out of the car an opened Chloe's door for her. They walked up to a small building that read 'DINER' in large cursive letters above the door. Once inside, Emily scanned the room for a familiar face, and once she found it, she approached the booth where its barer sat.
"Grandma!" Emily greeted her cheerfully with a hug, then moved a few steps back to where Chloe stood. They were side by side, both standing silently. Emily's grandmother raised her eyebrows, then looked over to Chloe.
"Right, right, right." She cleared her throat. "Grandma meet my girlfriend Chloe, Chloe this is my grandmother." She gestured from one person to the other as she said their name.
"I've heard so much about you." Chloe smiled and reached out her hand. Sara took it, but instead of shaking it, she used it to pull Chloe into an embrace.
"Lovely to meet you Chloe."
Chloe flinched. She recognized that voice. Before it had been menacing, without a name or a face. Now it belonged to the person who raised the woman she loves.
She subtly tried to escape Sara's arms, but she just got pulled tighter to her.
She reached her mouth up to Chloe's ear and whispered as quietly as she could, "Stop it. Now. And just act natural."
Sara let go of Chloe and slid into the booth on the opposite side of the girls.
"So, Chloe, how long have you known Emily?"
Still sliding into the end spot of the booth, Chloe cleared her throat. "Um, well I knew her last year as her therapist, then her friend. I had a huge crush on her and didn't know that she felt the same until later on." Chloe became more relaxed as she spoke about her and Emily.
"How sweet." She smiled at Chloe, then looked over at Emily. "And how long have you two been together?"
Emily raised her eyebrows, looked at Chloe, them back at Sara and finally spoke.
"We um, dated for a few months, but we broke up around this time last year."
As the questions continued, Chloe became less and less tense. She realized that when Sara contacted her, she really did have their best interests in mind; that she was just a sweet old lady caring for her granddaughter.
- - An Hour Later - -
"Well, my shift starts soon, so you lovebirds had better be going."
They both blushed when they heard Sara call them that.
"Thanks...I think we might stay for a few more minutes. Have another cup of coffee, you know?" Emily said with a smile.
"Sure thing, see you later dear. Chloe, loved meeting you." She grinned at both of the girls, then walked behind the counter to start working.
