Emily's phone was still in her hand by her side.
Emily sighed heavily, coming to the realization that she will have turned 19 in a matter of hours.
She took her left arm out of it's backpack strap and swung the bag around to her chest using her right arm. As she unzipped the front most pocket to put her phone away, it dinged again. A bit reluctantly Emily opened the notification hopping that it wasn't another birthday wish.
Chloe: Hey you, just wanted to say good morning. I'm sorry that I left your place in such a rush earlier. Let me make it up to you with dinner?
Emily: You paying?
Chloe: Only if you say yes ; )
Emily: How am I supposed to refuse free food?
Chloe: lol Pick you up at 8?
Emily: Fine by me. I'll be at school, can you pick me up from there?
Chloe: Sure, send me the address. ttyl
"Shit!" Emily looked up from her phone, and the elevator doors were closing. She figured she was so lost in conversation that she didn't hear them open. She hastily threw her backpack back over her shoulder and tried to catch the door, but the opening was too small for her hand to fit through it.
"Come on, come on, come on..." She mumbled to herself as she pressed the "open doors" button now that the doors had already shut. After a few frustrating minutes, the doors slowly began opening. There were a couple of teenagers standing outside of them waiting to enter the elevator.
"S'cuse me!" Emily quickly brushed past them and jogged to the parking garage exit. She hurried out of the building and across the street so that she was now on school property. She opened the lock screen of her phone, which was still in her hand, and looked at the time.
"8:30! No, no, no, no. This can't be happening." She sprinted to the entrance of the high school building, and didn't stop until she reached her classroom.
"I'm...sorry I'm l-late..." She managed to get the words out through pants. Emily's hands were on her knees for a moment before she slowly raised herself up and took her seat. Her desk was the furthest from her teachers; in the corner diagonal to his desk.
"Ms. Mendozas, so kind of you to join us." Emily's teacher announced sarcastically as he rose from his seat. "What's wrong? Had some hottie sleep over. Make you late?" He joked as he made his way over to her desk.
As the teacher got closer to Emily, she began to blush. She remembered her night with Chloe. The hottie. Her hottie.
She started chuckling when she thought about her.
"So there was a hottie. Good for you Mendozas. Get some." He did a small fist pump as he continued joking.
There were a couple of scattered chuckles throughout the classroom, as Emily had blushed harder causing her face to become extremely red.
"Ah, I'm just screwing with you, Emily. You're a good kid, it's fine. Plus, I'm not going to punish you on your birthday. I'll leave that to your man." He smirked as made his way back over to his desk and started class.
Emily's day was average and uneventful, but as the school day was close to its end, she felt nothing but the butterflies in her stomach. She was completely ecstatic about dinner with Chloe. The only bad thing was she had to stay for her extra curriculars, which lasted until around 7: 45 in the evening.
As Emily was packing up from her last period class, her phone went off.
Chloe: Can't wait for tonight : )
Emily: Me either, I need to see you. Today has been so boring :P
Chloe: Lol. Hope I can change that. See you in a couple hours
"I need this day to be over" She said as she sighed heavily. During the school day she had gotten countless birthday wishes and congratulations. They were sweet at first, but got real old, real fast.
*Four hours later*
Emily was working on tutoring some of her fellow English students when her phone went off again.
Chloe: I'm here, parked in the garage across the street. You almost ready?
Emily: Yeah, just have to finish up.
"Okay guys, I think that's enough for today. Let's wrap it up." She announced as she started putting her materials away and left the room.
As she made her way to the exit of the building- which was currently crowded with other kids from extra curriculars- she saw Chloe approaching the school.
"Hey, there. Ready to go." Chloe said as she was still walking up to Emily. She was wearing a long green dress with ankle high brown wedges. A jean jacket was around her shoulders, and her curls were bouncing up and down as she walked. Emily also notice that as the wind blew, the long back of the dress got swept to the side, revealing a little too much of Chloe's thighs.
Emily didn't reply at first as she was still taking in Chloe's appearance.
"Emily...?" She tilted her head to the side and got close enough to Emily that she could stop walking.
"Hm? Sorry?" She flinched a little bit when she was brought back into reality.
"Dinner. You ready?" Chloe threw her thumb over her shoulder to point at the parking garage behind her.
"Absolutely." She smiled warmly at Chloe.
"Alrighty then, lets do it." Chloe walked beside her to the crosswalk across the street. Before they approached it, Chloe reached for Emily's hand. Their fingers interlocked perfectly, like they were meant to fit together.
Right before Emily pressed the crosswalk button, a small crowd of students gathered behind them.
Emily could hear them whispering amongst themselves and became self conscious. She immediately released Chloe's hand and brought her hand up to her backpack strap. When she did this, Chloe gave her a puzzled look.
"Ba-" She was cut off by Emily clearing her throat, then walking across the street before the sign said to.
The girls made their way to the car, then the restaurant where Chloe had placed a reservation earlier in the day.
When they got to the restaurant, they were seated at a table in the back corner of the room. The entire area was painted white with dark red tablecloths and dimmed lights. There were candles and a vase full of flowers on each table.
Once they were situated and had ordered their wine- Chloe flirted with the waiter until he caved- Chloe looked Emily in the eyes for a moment. Emily couldn't tell what she was thinking. Her eyes were cold, but also condescending and concerned.
"Emily..." She said at last. "What was that? Back at the school?"
