~~~Half-time~~~
I watch as coach Rodgers paces back and forth in the locker room. The game is closer than it should be. I've already got 4 blocks and 8 defensive rebounds this game, and all of them are from John's turnovers. I haven't gotten another opportunity to score yet, so I'm still at 3 points, and I can see that is about to change. "The score shouldn't be 33-36!!! We shouldn't be ahead by only three points on our home court!!" Every game matters to coach Rodgers, be it scrimmage or not. "John, I need you to pass the damn ball!! You have taken 17 shots and only hit 5 of them!! Pass the ball to teammates. They can score!!" Everyone knows he is talking about me. "If you don't do it next half, I'm pulling you out of the game!!" John looks down at those words. Getting chewed out by a coach isn't a good experience.
He slams his clipboard against the locker and takes a deep sigh. "John, you need to get on the right path starting now. This is the only time I'm going to give you this chance. If you don't pass the ball around this half, your out the next two scrimmage game." We all stay silent as the coach looks around at the players. "Let's go out there and win this game cause you can be sure Edwin is coming out strong since it's such a close game." We all nod our heads and shout, yes, to coach.
We stand up as halftime ends, and we make it back out onto the court. The sides have switched up now, and the real game starts now. I get into position as James inbounds the ball to John, and he brings it down the court. We run some pick and roll plays, and John takes another bad shot, but I get the offensive board and hit a beautiful fadeaway shot.
That's 5 for me now, and we are up 5 starting the half. We get on defense, and I've decided to guard their best player, who is their shooting guard. He hit three 3's in the second quarter—5 in total. I have a height advantage of one inch. He tries the fancy dribble moves he used on Kenny after he substituted for John at the beginning of the second quarter. I'm way better at defense, though.
I poke the ball out as he tries to drive on his right. I get the ball right before it goes out of bounds, and I bring it down the court. John is calling for it now, which is nice! Sarcasm. I drive towards the basket, making it look like I'm going for a dunk or layup. I stop abruptly and hit an elbow jumper. I start running back to get on defense.
I'm at 7 points now. Now we are up 7. My impact on the game is probably going to be the most in this quarter. They run some plays, and their center gets an easy layup. James inbounds the ball, and they come down the court. John passes the ball to me for the first time this entire game. My match-up is smothering me, making sure I can't put the ball on the court.
I do the same thing to him as I did to John in our one on one. I bump his chest with my shoulder, creating a little bit of space, and I pull up in his face. I knock the 3 points shot down and jog back on defense without a word. The bleachers, on the other hand, are going crazy. That's 10 points in total now. The game continues as is, and I get many more opportunities to score, and I do. I make every shot I take. Making moves and disrespectful shots all game.
~~~End of the 4th quarter~~~
There are only 6 seconds left on the shot clock, and it's our ball. The score is a sad 67-51 in our favor. I've scored a total of 34 points. I've grabbed 11 boards and ended with 5 blocks and 4 assists—the same assists as our point guard, John. I bring the ball down the court, and my match-up is guarding me deeply. So I decide to show that it doesn't matter, and I shoot a final shot from 35 feet out and sink it.
Giving me 37 points. The man guarding me looks ready to throw a swing, but the refs see this and quickly intervene. The parents and students watching on our side erupted when I made that disgusting shot.
My total statistics for tonight were 37 points, 11 rebounds, 5 blocks, and 4 assists. I hit 14/14 field goals, and 4/4 from three, and 5/5 from the foul line. I know my stats won't be this good the next time I play cause my next opponents will be ready. The Edwins players calm down from the shot, and we do the usual good sportsmanship stuff. After a few minutes, we head into the locker room, and I sit on the bench feeling the calorie burn.
I take a couple of power bars out of my backpack and some water. Coach gets everyone's attention and starts a breakdown of tonight's game. He calls me into his office once he's done. It looks like it's time for a talk. I might get chewed out from that last play I made. That was a little uncalled for, but I couldn't help myself from crushing their spirits. As I think that I get a new badge from the system.
