Aristophaneso Pretty sure that jumping overboard is incredibly dangerous, especially for inexperienced people on a rocking ship. You need to climb on top of the rail, and if you slip or trip or jump off badly, you could easily flip and either smash yourself against the ship, or land poorly in the water. Fast speed + hitting water = break stuff.
(Pretty sure even on small ships that are basically a feet up from the water, you still don’t jump. You sit on the ship’s ledge and just roll into the water gently.)
