She then ignored him and went to check out the wind caller. As it was badly injured, it was still crouching there, otherwise, it would have escaped earlier.
Its crouching position was rather strange. Though it could no longer support itself, its two fore hooves were still supporting it against the ground, as if afraid to trod on something.
When Gu Xijiu got nearer, it immediately whistled angrily while raising its head as if giving a warning.
However, as it was severely injured, its whistle was not as intimidating as before.
Gu Xijiu said, "I’ll not hurt you; I only want to cure your wound." She took out some medicine and showed it to the wind caller.
The wind caller did not show any appreciation but whistled again, this time taking its voice up a notch.
"Master, it said that you remind him of a weasel paying a courtesy visit to a chicken, albeit with no good intention." The mussel opened its shell in Gu Xijiu’s sleeve and translated lazily.
Gu Xijiu had a thought and pulled it out, "You know how to speak the language of the beast? Come, be my translator and tell it that I will not make it surrender to be my mount. I’ll let it go immediately after I cure it."
As soon as the mussel reached the ground, it went back to its original size - as big as a small house. It opened and closed its shell, drooling while staring at the windcaller, "Master, it’s severely injured and is not able to recover in a short period of time. Besides, it does not appreciate your offering. It would be better if I eat it; its meat is very delicious…"
Gu Xijiu was annoyed and slapped on its shell, "Eat it if you dare! Be careful, for I may turn you into stew!"
The mussel was unhappy, "Master, you’re being partial…" It mumbled but it did translate Gu Xijiu's words to the wind caller.
It definitely added some of its own thoughts, "You’re known as the wind caller, right? You're just able to run faster but you are still much poorer than I am! My master just got me, so how would she fancy you? She was just being kind, wanting to cure you. But you are so stubborn and not being grateful! If she had harboured any bad intentions, how would you be able to escape with your current condition? If you don’t even understand this, that's stupid of you, no?"
Its last words obviously hit the wind caller’s weak spot, which let its guard down and nodded towards Gu Xijiu.
Gu Xijiu heaved a sigh of relief and felt that having a beast acting as a translator made things easier.
It seemed that the mussel she kept was rather useful, and not just a useless gourmand.
There were many wounds on the wind caller’s body and many of them needed to be stitched.
As Gu Xijiu needed to fight her way out of the Dark Forest herself, she had a complete set of medicine and bandage as well as surgical suture and needle. She quickly helped the wind caller with its wounds…
After Si Chen stood and observed her for a moment, he went to lend her a helping hand. With a vague smile, he said, "Ah Sheng, I didn’t know you were so kind."
Gu Xijiu slightly pursed her lips but said nothing.
Even though she knew the good and the bad, she usually disliked to be nosy.
She helped the wind caller this time, because she somehow felt pleased to see it for unknown reasons…
Furthermore, she admired its character of not being subdued by force. Therefore, she tried to save it.
The windcaller also felt her kindness and finally let down its guard, allowing her to apply medicine and even to suture its wound…
However, it was still subconsciously protecting itself and disallowed anyone to touch certain parts of its front chest.
Because that part was not injured, Gu Xijiu did not pay attention to it. She was shocked to see that there was an opening out of a sudden and thus, she took few more glances at it.
It seemed like something was wriggling out of it and that the hole was getting bigger.
Gu Xijiu wondered if the wind caller had the same function as a kangaroo, where its abdomen had a pouch to carry its young.
The wind caller also seemed to be aware of it as it quickly covered the hole with its fore hoof.
But before it could do that, a purple light shot out from its pouch…
Gu Xijiu was stunned, as she wondered what it was.
Meanwhile, Si Chen pulled her backwards, "It's a level eight mythological beast! Its pouch is actually carrying a level eight mythological beast!"
Gu Xijiu widened her eyes but before she could respond, the mussel behind them suddenly opened its shell to get the two of them in before closing it tightly back. It then drilled immediately into the earth while explaining in an urgent tone, "Master, a new born of a level eight mythological beast requires a blood sacrifice! You all mustn’t end up being its food! Quickly escape!"
The mussel was good in drilling. Furthermore, it used a lot of energy to save themselves and thus, it managed to drill a large hole in a blink of an eye and disappeared from the ground.
The wind caller was shocked and was looking at its own pouch.
Because of the bright purple light shooting up into the sky, its eyes were not able to adapt. It moaned in response.
As it was only a level five beast, it was instinctively afraid of the level eight beast. Therefore, the purple light frightened it that it crouched down, not daring to even move.
With an undulation on its pouch, an egg which radiated purple light bounced out.
The wind caller was stupefied.
The wind caller was oviparous and an egg would need to be nurtured in the pouch for two years before it could hatch.
Though the wind caller laid an egg three years ago, it lost it in a fight and finally managed to find the egg after it searched eight times at the same spot.
At that time, it somehow felt that the egg was larger and darker but it thought it was different probably because of the effects of falling out from its pouch. It was very excited when it found the egg, so it carefully put the egg back into its pouch. Also, because it learned previously, it became more protective of the egg when it fought. It thought the egg would hatch in two years but it did not, even after three years. And the egg’s color did not change too, it was still yellow and slightly reddish.
The windcaller felt a slight change in its egg and had signs of hatching only today. Therefore, it was delighted and was also more alert while crouching in its nest.
Yet, it did not expect to have met Dao Qingyang and his people…
With the help of Gu Xijiu, it was finally safe and its baby was about to be welcomed to the world, but the egg radiated a purple light instead…
The egg of level eight beast!
It was the egg of level eight beast!
The wind caller stared at the egg but it dared not move at all.
The egg rolled onto the ground and suddenly stopped radiating the purple light, but a vague golden light and a strong fragrance emitted from its shell, permeating the air…
...
Deep underground...
The mussel told Gu Xijiu with a shudder, "Master, hatching the egg of a level eight beast will require absorbtion of a large amount of blood, lest it will not hatch. Fortunately, I’m smart enough to realize it and brought you all away or you all will be eaten alive by the egg…"
Gu Xijiu looked upwards but she only saw a golden light shining, because they were too deep underground.
Golden light? Was it not the radiance of a level five beast?
When she was wondering, she smelled something good; so good that it was mouth-watering.
