บท 150: Talk about the sacred oath

Let's talk about a few basic settings: guest rights, sacred oaths, and sacred marriage contracts.

Whether it is the original work of Ice and Fire or the Game of Thrones series, these three basic settings are generally followed.

What are guest rights? It means that after the guest accepts the bread and salt provided by the host, neither the host nor the guest can harm each other. Failure to abide by this custom is considered trampling on the sacred oath. Those who violate it will be cursed by the gods in heaven and their whole family will not die well.

In the original work, there are only three well-known incidents of violating guest rights in the entire 8,000-year history of Westeros: the rat chef incident, the bloody wedding, and the mutiny at Craster's Keep.

There are also rules for denying guest rights. The host puts his unsheathed sword across his knees to indicate that he denies the guest rights. Then it's time to fight or negotiate.

The sign of the end is that the host gives gifts to the guests, and the guests also return the gifts, and the guest rights end here. After that, fighting between the two sides is not considered a violation of this custom.

The other two settings, sacred oath and sacred marriage contract, are more common.

The so-called sacred oath is to swear to the gods in the sky to do something. If you can't do it, it is considered a violation of the oath. All the gods on the side of justice will curse you and the person who swore will not die well.

At the end of the third century of Aegon's Conquest, the oath breakers on the whole continent included: Jaime the Kingslayer, Robb the Young Wolf, Eddard Stark who was beheaded by Emperor Joe (guess which oath he broke), Joffrey (blasphemy), and some members of the Bloody Troupe under the name of Vargo Hoult.

The people of Ice and Fire tend to believe in oaths. If someone breaks the oath, no matter what his background is, he will be abandoned by everyone. Jaime Lannister the Kingslayer is a clear example.

Except for the core forces in the West, basically no one looks up to him. Jaime was nagged by Robert for fifteen years, and he also abandoned himself for fifteen years.

Although Jaime killed the king to save hundreds of thousands of lives in King's Landing from wildfires, he himself felt that he had no honor to speak of after breaking his oath. If it weren't for Cersei, he might have killed the Mad King and committed suicide.

He even felt that there was no need to explain to anyone why he killed the king. Regardless of whether people believed it or not, even if they did, they would not forgive his oath-breaking behavior.

In Westeros, people will never swear easily. Once they make a sacred oath, they must abide by it. Anyone who breaks the oath will be identified by the NPCs of the Ice and Fire World, just like trampling on the rights of guests, just like the red names in the game. No matter which city they go to, the guards will actively identify and attack them.

Some people questioned whether the death rate was too high. In the case that the family's off-season soldiers generally swore allegiance to the lord, the big soldiers could surrender or flee after the lord died in battle, was captured or surrendered, otherwise they would be considered oath-breakers.

In the original book, the cavalry of the Karstark family left Robb's army only after they got the promise of their lord, and the lord was beheaded by the higher-level feudal lord, and the oath object was gone.

The oath knights executed it more thoroughly. When the lord was captured or killed, those with a strong temper generally died for the cause, and those who were not brave enough to die generally chose to join the Night's Watch (equivalent to the death penalty).

For example, in the original book, Desmond Grell, the coach of Riverrun, chose to wear black clothes and join the Night's Watch after Lord Edmure was captured.

The evil gods such as the Black Goat and the Night Lion do not value this, so Vargo Hoth, who believes in the Black Goat, will accept the oath-breakers as his subordinates. Other mercenary groups have an attitude of killing the oath-breakers without mercy.

The sacred marriage contract is similar to the sacred oath. Once the marriage is sworn, the other party cannot divorce and remarry before the death of one party. In addition, except for the believers of Valyria, the remaining believers of the gods can basically only marry one wife at a time.

The reason why the Church of the Seven Gods launched a rebellion during the Maegor period was precisely because the king who believed in the Seven Gods married more than one wife. Aegon I believed in the Valyria gods when he married his wife, and did not marry another after converting to the Seven Gods in the Starry Sept in Oldtown, so it was barely considered a violation of the sacred marriage contract.

Even though Walder the Elder married eight wives, the father of "Beauty" Brienne changed his wife every year, and he could only marry a new wife after the previous wife died "accidentally".

Robb, the young wolf, also violated the sacred marriage contract. Although he was not married, the engagement was also considered, so he died so miserably.

In the original book, Joffrey also broke off his engagement with Sansa, which was another act of breaking his oath, and his death was also miserable.

At this point, everyone should have a concept of breaking an oath.

Finally, I would like to mention that the death of Kingslayer Jaime will never be as dignified as in the TV series. His right hand only returned Bran's leg, and the retribution for killing the Mad King has not come yet.
