As Lara was going towards the temple, she did see what chaos the Yaaxil were able to cause.
They were agile, fast, and around close to peak human in strength. Most importantly, they were not afraid of dying. You can compare the Yaaxil with the Volatiles from Dying Light.
Just as she was climbing, she jumped onto a ledge to the left because a helicopter was going down—Yaaxil had jumped on it, entered the cabin, and killed the personnel. As it was crashing, it hit right where Lara had been moments earlier.
Getting up to the level of a bridge connected to the temple, Lara saw some Trinity guys who had been killed. She took a radio from one of them to hear what was happening on their side.
"This is Commander Rourker. The entire high council is here to personally oversee our victory. We will hold the perimeter at all costs," came the voice over the radio.
Lara, hearing all this, wanted to laugh. 'They came all here. This is like giving me all of Trinity's high leadership on a silver platter.'
At the same time, a helicopter dropped an armored car with a machine gun, which drove into the temple. Seeing this, Lara went back to climbing to reach the top where Amaru was.
Getting over a ledge of a platform connected to a circular stone door, Lara saw some Yaaxil running and jumping around. Near the door stood Crimson Fire, who was waiting for her.
Arriving at the door, Lara noticed one Yaaxil dragging a poor Trinity soldier while Crimson Fire spoke to them. Then the door opened after Crimson Fire stopped her speech.
Inside were Amaru, some cultists, and Trinity soldiers.
Amaru was thanking Kukulkan, stopping when he heard the door open. Turning around, he saw Lara, Crimson Fire, and the Yaaxil.
"They are with you?" Amaru asked, looking at Crimson Fire and the Yaaxil.
Lara, realizing he was addressing her, said, "Yeah, yeah, they're with me. They want to power the sun, not change reality."
Amaru said, "I'm doing this to protect Paititi. They chose wrong."
'Should I tell him that Crimson Fire doesn't give a fuck about Paititi and the Yaaxil even less?' thought Lara, but she asked him instead, "Did you kill Unuratu?"
Amaru, a bit offended, said, "I did not want to kill her. My insiders heard her discussing the location of the Silver Box with Uchu, and Rourke took her hostage. She was about to kill him, and he shot her. I did not want it to come to this."
Just as Amaru finished, he turned around. Lara, realizing he intended to run, drew her pistols and fired at him. Surprisingly, Amaru was extremely fast and even dodged the shot intended for his head, so it only hit his back. Even though he was shot in the back, he didn't slow down at all. Lara threw one of her ice picks at him, but Amaru sliced it in half with the Dagger of Chak Chel, like a hot knife through butter, before darting through a door that quickly closed behind him.
Lara was just dumbfounded. The bastard got shot in the back and didn't flinch, wasn't even affected. He dodged the bullet aimed at his head and even cut one of her secondary adamantium ice picks in half. 'That was five million pounds, asshole. Also, what is that dagger made of?'
On the floor was blood from Amaru, and he was even bleeding from the back. Lara had seen it; the bullets had penetrated. 'Does Amaru have a healing factor or something?' thought Lara. Even if he was just enchanted, he couldn't shrug off several bullet wounds like that. Even Captain America would have a hard time with multiple back wounds, and Lara herself would be in critical condition.
Seeing a way to the left that the Yaaxil were taking, Lara decided to follow, entering another portion of the temple. She quickly took cover behind some debris.
"Die, you fuckers!" shouted Rourke, firing the machine gun mounted on the armored car that was blocking the entrance to the tunnel.
The Yaaxil being gunned down didn't care as more swarmed in. Unfortunately for Rourke, Crimson Fire emerged from behind, leaping onto the car and ripping the machine gun off with ease.
Rourke attempted to draw his pistol, but as he saw the bottom of the machine descending toward him, he screamed, "Wait, no!" He had no chance to say anything more, as the first blow struck him, followed by the second and third, turning his upper body into a meat paste.
"That was a brutal finisher," Lara remarked, stepping out from her cover as Crimson Fire tore off the machine gun. She then used the armored car as a boost, jumping onto a wall then climbing up.
As Lara was climbing, she heard some news on the Trinity radio that made her happy. "The High Council got massacred. I repeat, the High Council got massacred."
Another voice added, "Commander Rourke is also dead."
"So who the fuck is in charge?" another voice asked.
A few seconds later, a desperate guy was heard, shouting, "All units, retreat!"
"But the perimeter," said one of the voices.
"There is no perimeter! Everyone is dead! Get the fuck out of here! Befor—" "Ghehegh," a low demonic sound interrupted the broadcast, and the radio stopped transmitting. The poor bastard got killed by the Yaaxil, as the other poor bastards surely would be.
Lara gripped the last ledge and finally climbed onto the roof of the temple. Just as she got up, Amaru finished his prayer to Kukulkan and inserted the dagger into the box. The energy of the Star Child inside the box began spreading over his arm in a golden glow, like the radiance of the sun. The energy coursed from his arm to his upper body, other limbs, and head.
Lara fell to her knee for a moment. The energy of the Star Child was overwhelming to a human, the difference in power insurmountable. Her non-human DNA, created from the genes that weren't human, gave her a mix of fear and admiration toward the energy, as though she stood before its creator.
Shaking her head, Lara pushed herself to stand, ignoring the fear and admiration. As a reincarnator, feeling fear and admiration just toward the energy of a Celestial was a shame she couldn't allow. If she couldn't be defiant against it, she was the biggest waste. As she steadied herself and her mind began to focus, the non-human DNA within her stirred. It shifted from loyal reverence, like Michael toward his creator, to rebellious defiance, like Lucifer's ambition to overthrow his creator.
The non-human DNA within her surged, hungry and defiant, as if it wanted to devour the energy. With the defiance burning inside her, Lara stood tall.
Amaru, having removed the dagger from the box, looked at Lara before lunging and stabbing her in the stomach with astonishing speed.
Lara, caught off guard, looked like a deer in headlights. She had expected Amaru to follow the ritual like in the game, not to attack at the first chance. 'Jonah was right,' she thought, begrudgingly admitting it.
As Amaru pressed the dagger deeper, he said, "I was a friend of your father, but he was close—"
"I know," Lara interrupted, placing her hands on the his hand that had the dagger. "No need for a villain monologue. Just tell me, how did you shrug off the bullet wounds?"
Amaru paused briefly before answering, "I wasn't chosen by Trinity for no reason. At a young age, I awakened my powers. Enhanced strength, speed, reactions—these are just secondary. The most important is my ability to heal myself."
Lara nodded, her eyes fixed on Amaru's hand as it cracked from the powerful energy before healing, only for new cracks to appear and heal again. The energy from the box was to powerful. Without his healing factor, Amaru would have been dead already.
While Amaru spoke, he failed to notice that some of the energy from the dagger was leaking into Lara, who was quietly absorbing it into her body.
As he finished speaking, Amaru asked, "Any last words? Don't worry. When I recreate the world, you and your parents will be happy."
Lara looked up at him and replied, "You know I'm British, right?"
"Yes?" Amaru responded.
Lara smiled, channeling the energy she had absorbed into her arms. As the golden energy surged through her, she yanked the dagger from her stomach. Amaru, seeing her glowing arms, tried to pry her grip loose, but he couldn't. With her strength boosted by the celestial energy, Lara turned the dagger and plunged it into his chest.
As Amaru stared at the dagger embedded in him and the energy flowing into Lara's body, she smiled and said, "Then you should know that beating natives like you is in my blood."
THE STONES!
To my readers from Britain: please know that this joke—and the ones before it—aren’t meant as hateful jabs toward you. I just couldn’t resist writing them because they were too good to leave out in a fanfic with a british protagonist. Much love to all the British gentlemen and ladies out there!
Also, this is only the beginning of the fight.
