Volume 3 – Exam Time!
A New (Q)? Part 1
Even though the school was closed for exams, the library remained open for students to study. Shyam saw it as a haven of peace, untouched by the usual noise of his classmates. Unlike others who avoided the library because it only had textbooks and reference material, he appreciated its tranquility.
Two days had passed since his last encounter with Raitha. This afternoon, he was seated in a quiet corner, focused on his notes. The creak of the library door broke his concentration. Without thinking, Shyam moved behind the shelves, his heart racing.
As he peeked through the gaps between books, he saw Raitha enter. Relief washed over him—it wasn't a teacher or someone likely to cause trouble. But before he could step out of hiding, another set of footsteps followed.
A second girl entered—a stranger to Shyam. She had reddish hair, small yet expressive eyes, and wore the school uniform. She carried herself with a friendly air, but her unfamiliarity made Shyam uneasy. Her presence felt like a disruption to his peaceful retreat.
The two girls walked toward the tables in silence until the stranger suddenly spoke.
"Hey, don't you feel like we're being watched?" she said, her voice calm but with an unsettlingly playful edge.
Shyam's heart skipped a beat. Was she talking about him?
Before he could decide what to do, the girl suddenly ran toward the window. Shyam, peeking through the gaps, watched in disbelief as she reached out and grabbed a cat perched precariously on the windowsill.
How did she even know there was a cat there? And how did it get there in the first place?
His focus on the bizarre scene was interrupted by a sudden touch on his shoulder. A jolt of panic surged through him. Turning quickly, he found himself face-to-face with Raitha, her expression one of quiet curiosity.
"I-I was just... uh, checking the name of this book," Shyam stammered, attempting a casual smile while hiding his obvious nerves.
Raitha's gaze lingered on him for a moment before she smiled, ignoring his awkward excuse. "Oh, are you here to study too, Shyam?" she asked, her voice sparkling with excitement.
"Uh, yeah," he replied, trying to steady himself.
"Great! I came to study too. But on my way here, this girl started following me," Raitha began, her words tumbling out in a flurry. "I tried to ignore her, but she kept getting closer. Eventually, I asked her why she was following me, and do you know what she said?"
"What?" Shyam asked, curious despite himself.
"She said, 'Make me your friend.'"
Shyam blinked in surprise.
"At first, I refused—it was such a sudden request! But then she started begging. She wouldn't let it go, so I gave in just to stop her," Raitha continued with a sigh. "And now... here we are."
Shyam glanced at the stranger, who was now sitting with the cat in her lap, seemingly oblivious to the attention she'd drawn. Something about her presence made him uneasy, but he couldn't quite put his finger on why.
