CH1: ( Why Was She ( Q ) At Me? )

VOL 2 - Was It Just Luck?

---

In a quiet, modest house early that morning, a gruff yet caring voice spoke.

"Your health doesn't seem too good. You should skip school today."

It was Raitha's father, concerned as ever. Raitha had woken up with a slight fever—not enough to be bedridden, but just enough to worry him.

"I can't miss school again, Dad," Raitha replied, her voice slightly muffled by the mask she already wore. "I skipped yesterday. Missing two days will mess up my studies."

Her father sighed. "Education is important, but so is your health..."

But Raitha, as stubborn as she could be, was already gathering her schoolbag. Knowing he couldn't change her mind, her father reluctantly let her go but reminded her to stay cautious.

When Raitha reached school, she spotted Shyam by the lockers, casually changing his shoes. She instinctively slowed down, wanting to greet him. But then, she hesitated.

"If I talk to him, I might pass this fever to him... I should keep my distance today," she thought, biting her lip.

So, she walked past him as if he weren't even there.

"Hey, Raitha?"

Shyam called out, a hint of confusion in his voice. She ignored him completely.

He tried again. "Raitha! Wait up!"

But she continued walking, not once looking back.

The day passed, and Raitha avoided Shyam at every corner. Every time he tried to approach, she would dodge him with a polite yet distant glance, leaving him bewildered.

"Did I do something wrong?" Shyam muttered to himself during lunch. "She's never ignored me like this before... Did I say something that upset her?"

He spent the rest of the day wracking his brain for an answer, replaying every conversation they'd had. Still, he couldn't figure out what had gone wrong.

"I'll ask her after school," he resolved.

But after class, when he finally managed to approach her, she glanced at him briefly, gave him a strange look, and walked away again without a word.

Shyam's heart sank. That night, sleep evaded him as countless thoughts filled his mind.

"What could I have done? Did I accidentally hurt her feelings? Maybe I teased her too much? No, that doesn't make sense..."

His imagination spiraled out of control, conjuring scenarios more ridiculous by the minute. By the time morning came, he was exhausted yet determined to get answers.

When he arrived at school the next day, his nerves were on edge. He spotted Raitha walking toward him. His heart raced—not with hope, but with dread.

"What if she's still mad at me?" he thought, already bracing himself for another cold shoulder.

But to his surprise, Raitha walked right up to him, her expression soft and apologetic.

"Hey, Shyam. Sorry about yesterday."

Shyam blinked in disbelief. "Sorry? Wait, you're not mad at me?"

Raitha tilted her head, confused. "Mad? Why would I be mad at you?"

Her calm response left him fumbling for words. "I-I mean, you ignored me all day... I thought I made you upset or something."

And then Raitha started laughing—softly at first, but soon it turned into a bright, melodic giggle that made Shyam's cheeks burn.

"You thought I was angry at you? Oh, Shyam, that's so silly!"

She could barely contain her laughter as she explained, "I had a slight fever yesterday and didn't want to pass it to you. That's why I avoided you."

Realization hit Shyam like a brick. All those sleepless hours, all those ridiculous scenarios he'd imagined—they were all for nothing. His face turned crimson.

"I-I see," he stammered, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. "Guess I overthought it, huh?"

Raitha smirked mischievously. "Overthought? That's putting it lightly."

Shyam groaned, covering his face with his hands as Raitha giggled again, her laughter infectious.

After that, they attended class as usual, the awkwardness fading into the comfort of their friendship.

But for Shyam, the memory of his sleepless night and Raitha's laughter stayed with him longer than he cared to admit.
