"A Meowth that can speak human language?" Nurse Joy's voice was filled with disbelief. In all her years as a nurse, she had never encountered a Pokémon that could speak human words. Not even in her studies had she ever heard of such a thing.
Misty, though equally surprised, found herself more shocked by the revelation that the group in front of them was none other than Team Rocket, the notorious organization terrorizing the Kanto region.
Ash, however, remained calm. He knew that while Team Rocket had been a persistent nuisance, their strength was generally subpar. The trio's antics and failures were well-known, and their rank within Team Rocket was low. If not for James' influential family and Jessie's mysterious past, they would likely have been kicked out by now.
James came from a wealthy family with ties to the Johto region, but Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket, was cautious about offending him. Jessie's situation was even more complex. While she had grown up poor, her true background was much more extraordinary—she was the daughter of the former leader of Team Rocket and one of Giovanni's closest allies. These family ties kept Jessie and James in good standing within Team Rocket, despite their frequent failures.
"Are you surprised that Meowth can speak human?" Meowth growled, clearly frustrated. "We are Team Rocket, after all! It's not just about the talking cat!" He was proud of their villainous reputation, but it was clear that the focus on his ability to speak was irritating him.
Nurse Joy, Misty, and Ash were momentarily taken aback, but Ash quickly took charge. "We need to get those Poké Balls back!" He was already observing the large bag that the trio had brought, which appeared to be filled with stolen Poké Balls.
Jessie sneered at Ash. "You want to take back the Pokémon from Team Rocket?" she mocked. "Just a little kid thinking he can defeat us?"
James, twirling his rose in an exaggerated manner, gave a smirk. "You're just a child. What do you know about fighting us?"
Meowth wasn't going to be left out. "You're about to see what Team Rocket can really do!" He bared his sharp claws, showing his readiness to fight.
Nurse Joy, visibly nervous, looked to Ash and Misty. She wasn't much of a fighter herself, so she could only hope that the two of them could handle the situation. After all, Team Rocket was a well-known threat, and their strength shouldn't be underestimated.
"Ash…" Misty spoke hesitantly, worried about what might happen. She had no idea how strong Team Rocket was, but their reputation alone was enough to make her anxious.
"It's okay. Trust me," Ash reassured her. He turned to Pikachu, who had been waiting on his shoulder. "Pikachu, use Thunder Shock!"
Jessie, still dismissing Pikachu, laughed derisively. "A cute little Pikachu? You think that's enough to stop us?"
But Pikachu was ready. He leapt from Ash's shoulder and, before hitting the ground, unleashed a powerful Thunder Shock. The bright electric energy crackled through the air, lighting up the dim hallway.
Although Pikachu's stamina hadn't fully recovered, after a full night's rest, he had regained a significant amount of strength. The battle with the Spearows earlier had further attuned him to the latent energy within him, making him even more powerful than before.
The speed of Pikachu's attack caught Team Rocket off guard. By the time they registered what was happening, it was too late. The electric shock enveloped them, causing a sharp crackling sound as they screamed in pain.
Misty and Nurse Joy watched in awe as the three members of Team Rocket, along with Ekans—Jessie's Pokémon—fell to the ground, smoke rising from their mouths. The attack had clearly been more powerful than they had anticipated.
"Incredible…" Nurse Joy exclaimed, her eyes wide. She could tell Pikachu's strength had grown significantly. To think that he was able to defeat Team Rocket with a single attack like that was impressive, considering the trio's reputation.
But Ash wasn't ready to celebrate just yet. He had a nagging feeling that something wasn't quite right. As he scanned the area, he realized that something was missing. Koffing, James' Pokémon, was nowhere to be seen.
"Pikachu, watch out!" Ash shouted, his voice urgent.
Before they could react, a strong wind blew past them. Ash instinctively grabbed Misty and pulled her to the side, dragging Nurse Joy with them just in time.
A spherical shape shot past them, missing Pikachu by inches. The impact left a small crater in the ground, showing just how powerful the attack had been.
"What? It dodged?!" James exclaimed, shocked. He had seen his Koffing floating quietly behind him, but hadn't issued any orders. However, he trusted Koffing to know what to do.
Koffing had been waiting for the right moment. When it saw the opening, it charged forward, launching a surprise Tackle aimed at Ash, Misty, and Nurse Joy. It was meant to knock them out of the way and strike Pikachu. But Pikachu's quick reflexes allowed him to avoid the attack.
"Pikachu, use Thunder Shock again!" Ash ordered without hesitation. This time, he knew the only way to ensure they'd win was to take Koffing out of commission.
"Pika! Pika!" Pikachu responded energetically, unleashing another burst of electricity. The Thunder Shock hit Koffing head-on, knocking him out cold.
With Koffing defeated, the last of Team Rocket's fighting strength crumbled. The situation was now completely in Ash and the others' favor.
"That's it…" Ash said, his body relaxed for the first time since the confrontation began. Team Rocket had been completely defeated, their Pokémon incapacitated. It was over.
Nurse Joy sighed with relief, her shoulders relaxing. "Thank you, Ash, Misty, and Pikachu. You saved the day."
Misty smiled at Pikachu, who was catching his breath. "You were amazing, Pikachu."
Ash looked down at Pikachu, grinning proudly. "We make a great team."
With the threat neutralized and the stolen Pokémon safe once more, the group took a moment to catch their breath. As they watched Team Rocket retreat—having failed yet again—it became clear that no matter how many times they were defeated, the trio would always be back, ready to cause more chaos. But for now, Ash, Misty, and Nurse Joy had won the day.
