I turned to Rias, curiosity sparking a question. "Hey, Rias-senpai."
Rias, mid-sip of water, choked in surprise. Akeno immediately broke into giggles, Kiba fought to stifle his laughter, and Issei bit his lip to hold back a snicker. Koneko, as always, remained completely unbothered.
Rias cleared her throat, giving me an exasperated look. "What is it, Shiro? Also, please don't call me that. That's just an anime thing."
"Oh, I know," I replied with a smirk. "I just wanted to see your reaction."
Rias sighed and shook her head. "You're unbelievable. So, what did you need?"
"I was wondering if you had any magic books lying around that you don't need. If so, could I buy them off you?"
Rias raised an eyebrow but smiled. "I do have a few, but there's no need for payment."
"Are you sure? I don't mind paying," I offered.
She waved the idea off. "I'm sure."
Rising from her seat, Rias walked to the bookshelf behind her, scanning its contents. After a moment, she pulled down three books and handed them to me.
"Thank you, Rias," I said sincerely.
"It's no problem," she replied, taking her seat again.
I looked at the titles, excitement bubbling up as I read them: Icicle Lance, Chain Lightning, and Metal Control. These weren't just basic spells—they were advanced magic.
Akeno leaned in close to Rias and whispered something I couldn't quite catch. Whatever she said made Rias's eyes widen slightly, and my curiosity was piqued. I used Observe on Akeno.

Unsurprising, but impressive stats nonetheless. Just then, a notification popped up.
Observe has leveled up! 37/100
I didn't pay much attention to it and instead returned to my inventory to continue where I had left off.
Inventory:
• 147 arrows
• 89 vampire fangs
• 237 black dragon scales
• 367 dragon bones
• 110 dragon teeth
Before I could dive deeper into my inventory, Rias interrupted.
"I've just received information about a stray devil hiding out in a warehouse," she announced, her tone calm but serious. "Shiro, would you like to join us?"
"Sure," I replied without hesitation.
….
We arrived at the warehouse, the air heavy with an ominous presence. Rias led the group inside, her commanding aura keeping everyone focused.
"Issei, stay behind me," she instructed. "Watch carefully and learn. You're not ready to fight yet."
Issei nodded, falling in line behind her. Meanwhile, I wandered off a little, my curiosity getting the better of me. The dimly lit warehouse echoed with faint shuffling sounds, putting me on edge.
I returned to the group just as the stray devil appeared, strutting forward with an unsettling smirk. She was tall, with twisted features that barely resembled her former human self. Despite her grotesque appearance, she rubbed her chest seductively as she addressed Rias.
I glanced away, thoroughly uncomfortable, but the stray's eyes landed on me, and her grin widened.
"Oh, what's this? A shy one?" Her voice was sickly sweet, laced with mockery. "Don't worry, little boy. I'll make you into a real man."
My face heated up instantly as I turned away, blushing furiously.
Akeno giggled softly behind me. "My, my, Shiro. You're too innocent for this."
I gritted my teeth, trying to focus. This is going to be a long mission.
I heard the unmistakable sound of a brutal beatdown. Turning around, I saw Koneko absolutely pummeling the stray devil with relentless fury. Her small fists struck with a force that belied her petite frame, each punch emphasizing her anger.
"Don't—" punch
"Mess—" punch
"With—" punch
"My—" punch
"Boyfriend!"
With one final uppercut, the stray devil was sent sprawling, only for Akeno to step in, her signature sadistic smile in place. A crackle of lightning danced around her fingers before she unleashed a bolt of electricity, leaving the stray battered and twitching.
Rias stepped forward, her gaze cold and commanding. "Anything to say before your end?"
The stray devil coughed and spat blood, her voice hoarse. "Kill me."
Rias's expression didn't change as she extended her hand. "Wish granted."
With a burst of crimson energy, her destruction magic consumed the stray, leaving nothing behind.
Koneko walked over to me, her usual stoic expression softening. She got on her tiptoes and patted my head, catching me completely off guard.
"Good boy," she said simply.
I blinked in confusion, unsure of how to respond. Koneko noticed my expression and elaborated.
"You looked away when she… well, you know," she explained, a faint blush dusting her cheeks. "Unlike a certain perv over there."
I glanced at Issei, who was desperately trying to hide his disappointment at missing the action.
….
On the way back to my house, I turned to Koneko. "So, should you bring your stuff here or what?"
"I'll do that Monday," she replied.
"Want me to help?" I offered.
"You know you'll miss school," she said, narrowing her eyes slightly.
"That's the point," I teased with a grin.
She flicked my forehead. "No skipping."
"Oww," I whined, rubbing the spot as she smirked.
….
It was Sunday, and I was walking through the park, enjoying the calm atmosphere. Suddenly, I heard a startled cry.
"Ahh!"
I turned in time to catch sight of a girl tumbling to the ground, her skirt flipping up slightly. I averted my gaze immediately, catching a glimpse of blue-and-white striped panties before I focused on the ground instead.
The girl scrambled to her feet, covering herself with an embarrassed flush. She had long blonde hair, bright green eyes, and a childlike innocence to her expression. Curious, I used Observe on her.

….
I extended a hand to help her up. She hesitated for a moment before taking it, her grip soft yet warm.
"Thank you very much," she said, her voice gentle and sincere.
"It's no problem," I replied with a small smile.
"I'm Asia Argento," she introduced herself, bowing slightly.
"I'm Shiro. Nice to meet you," I said in return.
As I looked at her, I realized who she was—and what awaited her if she reached the church. I felt a pang of guilt knowing I was about to lie, but if it meant sparing her from what I knew was coming, it was worth it.
"You're from the church, right?" I asked cautiously.
Her expression faltered, sadness flickering in her eyes. "Well, no… not exactly. I've been thrown out of the church I was staying at. I'm heading to a new one now."
I leaned in slightly and whispered, my tone serious. "Asia, I know this might be hard to believe, but the church you're going to—it's a trap. The fallen angels are planning to use you. I know we just met, but you have to trust me. I overheard everything when I passed by the church."
Her eyes widened, confusion and fear mingling in her expression. "A trap…? But why would they—"
"They want your Sacred Gear," I interrupted gently. "It's too valuable. Please, Asia, don't go to them."
She hesitated, uncertainty written all over her face. "But…?"
I placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Stay with me for now. I'll explain everything and keep you safe."
I smiled at her kindly, fully reassuring her.
Asia's eyes widened like dinner plates, the shock clear on her face. "A-Are you s-sure?" she stammered.
"Yes," I said firmly.
Her voice trembled with hesitation. "I'm sorry that I have to ask, but… are you a devil?"
I shook my head. "No, I'm not a devil. If you want proof, let me hold your cross necklace. If I were a devil, it would burn me, right?"
She hesitated but eventually took off her necklace and handed it to me. I held it in my hand without issue.
"See? Nothing," I said, showing her my unscorched palm. "I'm not lying to you."
Asia looked at the necklace in my hand, her eyes widening even further. "The color… it changed!"
I glanced at the necklace, noticing its color had shifted to blue.
"This necklace changes color to reveal lies," she explained, her voice trembling. "Blue means the person is telling the truth. Red means they're lying. I… I can't believe it. I can't believe they would do this to me."
Her voice cracked, and tears began to stream down her face. Without thinking, I pulled her into a comforting hug.
….
After Asia had calmed down and stopped crying, I handed her necklace back. As we made our way to my house, a thought nagged at the back of my mind.
Koneko's going to kill me.
We arrived at my home to find Koneko lounging on the couch. Her sharp gaze shifted to us as we entered. She looked at Asia, then at me. Her eyes narrowed slightly as she took in my nervous expression.
"Shiro," Koneko said flatly, "explain who this is."
"How about we let her explain instead?" I suggested, hoping to deflect some of the tension.
Asia stepped forward, her voice soft but steady. "Hi, I'm Asia Argento. Shiro saved me from being sent into the hands of fallen angels."
Koneko's expression didn't waver. "You're from the Church."
Asia nodded, her tone tinged with sadness. "I was thrown out of the Church because I healed a devil."
"Oh, before I forget," I interjected, "Asia, Koneko here is my girlfriend."
"And a devil," Koneko added bluntly.
Asia's eyes widened at the revelation. "You're a devil?"
"Asia, are you okay?" I asked, noticing her startled expression.
Asia smiled faintly, her green eyes softening. "I'm fine. You seem like a good person, Koneko."
"She really is," I said with a warm smile. "I love her very much."
Koneko's cheeks turned a faint shade of pink, and she looked away slightly.
I continued, "You see, I was walking by an old, run-down church when I overheard a group of fallen angels talking about their plan to take Twilight Healing from Asia. Taking someone's Sacred Gear would kill them. I couldn't let that happen, so I brought her here."
Koneko nodded thoughtfully. "Okay. I'll inform Rias about what you saw. Oh, by the way, your candy stash is on the table."
"Wait, what?" I blinked, momentarily distracted.
Asia tilted her head curiously. "Who is Rias?"
"Rias is Koneko's boss," I explained. "Anything supernatural that happens in this town falls under her jurisdiction. Even angels have to get her permission to walk around here. She's very kind but can be a bit commanding at times. Still, she has a good heart."
"I understand," Asia said softly, nodding. "Um… so where do I stay?"
I hesitated for a moment, glancing at Koneko, who raised an eyebrow. This was going to be tricky.
….
After showing Asia to her room, I returned to mine and put on some music to relax. The familiar rhythm filled the air, helping me focus as I entered my Instant Dungeon.
The dark, ominous vampire castle was still there in the distance, but my attention shifted to something more pressing—the skill books I hadn't yet used.
I opened my inventory and took a closer look at their titles:
• Icicle Lance
• Chain Lightning
• Metal Control
• Holy Break
• Hell Flare
• Mist of Death
• Water Slicers
• Dragon Lightning
A prompt appeared in front of me.
Would you like to learn these skills?
Yes / No
