Chapter 11: Secrets and Lies
Alex's eyes locked on Ethan's, her mind racing with questions. What was he hiding from her? And why?
Ethan's expression was neutral, but Alex saw a flicker of something in his eyes. Something that looked like guilt.
"What's going on, Ethan?" Alex asked, her voice low and even. "Who was that man, really?"
Ethan sighed, rubbing his temples. "Alex, I told you, he's just a friend," he said, his voice firm.
But Alex wasn't convinced. She saw the way Ethan's eyes darted around the room, the way he avoided her gaze.
"I don't believe you," Alex said, her voice firm. "You're hiding something from me, Ethan. What is it?"
Ethan's expression changed, his eyes narrowing. "Alex, I'm trying to protect you," he said, his voice low. "You don't need to know everything."
Alex's eyes flashed with anger. "I don't need to know everything?" she repeated. "I'm in this with you, Ethan. I have a right to know what's going on."
Ethan's face was grim, his eyes locked on hers. "Fine," he said, his voice tight. "If you want to know, I'll tell you. But you have to promise me one thing."
"What's that?" Alex asked, her voice cautious.
"You have to promise me you'll trust me," Ethan said, his eyes burning with intensity. "No matter what I tell you, you have to trust me."
Alex hesitated, unsure of what to say. Could she really trust Ethan? Or was he just trying to manipulate her?
But as she looked into his eyes, Alex saw something there that made her heart skip a beat. Something that looked like sincerity.
"Okay," Alex said finally, her voice soft. "I'll trust you."
Ethan's face relaxed, his eyes filled with relief. "Thank you, Alex," he said, his voice low. "I promise you, I'll tell you everything."
As Ethan took a deep breath, Alex felt a sense of trepidation wash over her. What was Ethan going to tell her? And would she be able to handle the truth?
"Ethan, what is it?" Alex asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Ethan's eyes locked on hers, his expression grim. "It's about my past," he said, his voice low. "About the people I testified against."
Alex's heart skipped a beat. What did Ethan's past have to do with their current situation?
But before she could ask any more questions, Ethan's phone rang again.
Ethan's eyes flicked to the phone, his expression changing from grim to alarmed.
"What is it?" Alex asked, her voice tight with fear.
Ethan's face was pale. "It's the marshal," he said, his voice low. "He says we have to get out of here. Now."
Alex's heart sank. What was happening? And where were they going to go?
As Ethan grabbed her hand, pulling her towards the door, Alex knew that their situation had just gotten a lot more desperate.
They were on the run again. And this time, they might not be so lucky.
