บท 56: I Just Want a Single Ending [56]

Could that be… Soyo's mom?

After a moment of serious thought, Kamigawa Saku realized why the woman looked so familiar.

It was mainly the brown hair—just like Soyo's—and her overall demeanor, along with that subtle sense of familiarity.

But didn't her mom just get home?

Why would she suddenly be leaving the apartment?

Something didn't quite add up.

No, actually, if she'd come home, it would make sense for her to head out again soon after.

Could it be that she had to leave for work unexpectedly?

Recalling that Soyo had once mentioned her mother's demanding job, Kamigawa quickly connected the dots to what seemed the most likely explanation.

He felt a bit guilty for thinking this way, but if her mother really had left on short notice… then it was great news for him.

From his time with Nagasaki Soyo, he could sense she was someone who truly valued the presence of family.

Putting aside small, irrelevant details, the strongest evidence was her sensitivity to the word "sister."

That's exactly why he had approached her under the guise of a "younger brother" giving flowers to his "older sister," just to see how she'd respond.

Now that her mom had suddenly come home only to rush off for work again, she was probably feeling a huge emotional letdown.

As they say, without expectations, there's no disappointment.

If he could swoop in at her loneliest, most vulnerable moment and offer her companionship and comfort, he'd be sure to make a big impression, closing the distance between them even more.

The only real risk was accidentally gaining too much favor and having her develop feelings for him.

But… it probably wouldn't go that far.

This wasn't a dating sim, after all—girls aren't that easily won over, right?

It was just one time keeping her company.

Of course, to be safe, he'd continue to play the "younger brother" role as a shield.

He'd make her think it was a sibling-like bond, not romantic.

He'd be her friend but could also be her younger brother.

As long as she didn't fall for him, everything would work out fine.

Keeping up the "younger brother" act would be easy enough.

With the plan set, Kamigawa Saku sent Nagasaki Soyo a message.

The only thing left to confirm was whether the person he'd just seen leaving was, indeed, her mom.

Kamigawa Saku: Hey, just wanted to tell you—I saw a lady walking out of the building just now who looked a lot like you. Kind of like what I imagine you'd look like in the future.

Soyo replied almost immediately.

Nagasaki Soyo: That was probably my mom. She just stepped out for a bit.

Kamigawa Saku: Oh, I see. If I'd known, I would've stopped to say hello to her.

Kamigawa Saku: But why'd she step out again? Was it to grab something from the convenience store?

Nagasaki Soyo: There was an issue at work, so she had to go back in a hurry.

Reading her response, Kamigawa Saku couldn't help but smile, feeling his plan fall perfectly into place.

Victory!

Just as he'd predicted, everything was working out entirely in his favor.

"Hah…"

Staring at the chat window showing her message as "read" but without any response, Nagasaki Soyo tried to lift her spirits.

After her mom left, she'd lost her appetite.

Unsure of what to do next, she suddenly received a message from Kamigawa Saku.

Only then did she remember—she still had something to focus on.

She could go back to teaching him bass, just like yesterday.

Even without her mom's company, she wouldn't feel so alone.

Just as she picked up her phone, ready to message him and say she'd be willing to continue the lesson, the doorbell rang.

Hearing the sound, Soyo had a pretty good guess who it might be.

But even so, she cautiously checked through the video intercom.

As she'd thought, it was Kamigawa Saku standing outside.

Without hesitation, Soyo opened the door.

The first thing she saw was a bright sunflower in full bloom, followed by Kamigawa's beaming smile—one even sunnier than the flower he held.

"Good evening, Soyo-nee."

"Eh? N-Nee…?"

Hearing him call her that suddenly, a blush crept across Soyo's cheeks.

"What's wrong?"

Seeing her reaction, Kamigawa felt even more certain his guess was spot-on.

Soyo quickly regained her composure, acting as though nothing had happened, her tone gentle as ever. "Oh, it's nothing. I just didn't expect you to call me that."

"Didn't I mention it last night? I said I'd give you another flower as your 'younger brother,' right?" Kamigawa explained casually.

He knew that Soyo cared about being seen as a "sister," but he couldn't just come out and say that. Instead, he'd drop hints now and then.

When he did mention it, he made sure to sound relaxed, almost like he was joking.

Otherwise, he'd come across as too eager—or worse, weird.

After all, their relationship wasn't quite close enough for him to suddenly declare himself her honorary little brother.

"Right, you did. Well, come on in."

Soyo stepped aside, warmly welcoming him in.

"Excuse the intrusion."

With that, Kamigawa walked into her home, sunflower in hand.

After closing the door and removing his shoes, he asked, "Where should I put this sunflower for you?"

"Just place it on the balcony."

After some thought last night, Soyo had decided that the balcony was the best spot.

It was a sunflower, after all—of course it should be where it could soak up as much sunlight as possible.

"Got it."

With a nod, Kamigawa carried the sunflower over to the balcony.

"Thanks for the help."

Soyo smiled as she looked at the sunflower against the night sky, then turned to Kamigawa standing beside her.

"It's no trouble—honestly, it was pretty easy."

Thanks to his "enhanced" stats, he had more strength than most, and a small sunflower plant like this was barely any effort.

"Oh, by the way, I left the watering can and other things downstairs. I'll go grab them for you."

Even with all his strength, he only had two hands, so it was impossible to carry everything up in one trip.

Seeing that he was about to head out, Soyo quickly stopped him. "There's no rush! You can just bring them up tomorrow or whenever—it's hardly worth making a special trip just for that."

"Alright, I'll just bring them with me when I stop by tomorrow."

"Thank you so much."

After saying this, Soyo suddenly remembered something, a concerned look flashing across her face. "Oh, um… I was just wondering, have you had dinner yet?"

"No, not yet."

Kamigawa lied smoothly, keeping his face completely neutral.

He already knew exactly where this was going.

Soyo extended the invitation, "In that case, would you like to join me for dinner? I just finished cooking not too long ago."
