"Is that so? Such an inspiring will and conviction. Captain Shihoin is indeed fortunate to have a subordinate like you; it's truly enviable."
With a hint of admiration and respect, Makoto spoke, indirectly affirming the charisma of Shihoin Yoruichi—a compliment that brought a subtle smile to Soi Fon's face.
Perhaps…direct praise for Soi Fon wouldn't have had as much effect, but by lauding Shihoin Yoruichi, he could certainly win Soi Fon over as an ally.
Makoto's gentle gaze took in every nuance of Soi Fon's reaction, and he couldn't help but reflect that the current Soi Fon was far from the cool, prideful captain she would become in the future.
Right now, she was still so young and innocent…
"How about this…" Makoto's thoughts shifted, and he continued, "I have an ancient family technique for therapeutic massage. It might help alleviate some developmental delays. If you don't mind, you could come to me regularly for treatment. How does that sound?"
In that moment, under Makoto's gentle concern and seemingly harmless gaze, most of Soi Fon's initial hostility had dissipated, even giving way to a growing sense of trust.
Lowering her gaze to her own slender, almost childlike figure, Fon couldn't deny that her development had indeed been rather slow.
'If… I could grow a bit more, perhaps Lady Yoruichi would like me too?'
After a long moment of hesitation, Fon slowly nodded, agreeing to the proposal.
Seeing this, Makoto's face broke into a smile.
With this arrangement, he could treat Soi Fon's growth issues while building a closer rapport with her. Moreover, regular, open meetings would make it easier to avoid the watchful eyes of other members of the Second Division.
A triple benefit.
"Well then, shall we begin today's treatment right now?" Makoto inquired.
"Alright," Soi Fon agreed with a nod.
Once again, she lay back on the bed, feeling far more at ease this time, even allowing herself a few moments to study Makoto.
With his dark hair and gentle eyes, Makoto had a handsome, refined look, and a gaze that always seemed to exude kindness. Once the treatment started, his eyes turned exceptionally focused…
Gradually, Fon slipped into a professional mindset, instinctively gathering information about Makoto in her capacity as an officer, noting everything from his estimated height and weight, the shape of his zanpakuto, down to the length of his fingers…
Suddenly, she felt a sharp sensation pierce her body, and a soft, surprised moan escaped her lips.
"Ugh~~"
In an instant, her face flushed bright red, even her delicate feet turning the shade of pink as if dusted with blush.
Makoto glanced in mild surprise at her feet, which seemed to reflect Soi Fon's genuine emotions. As he continued with the acupuncture, he began chatting casually with her, hoping to ease her mind.
"Miss Fon, is this your first time in the medical division?"
"Mm," she nodded.
"Coming alone—quite brave of you, Miss Fon."
"Actually… it's not that…"
"No, truly, among others your age, you're remarkably outstanding…"
"Well…I just wanted to keep trying…"
"To catch up to Lady Yoruichi…"
"What's Captain Shihoin like? Bearing the title of 'Goddess of Flash,' she must be incredibly skilled, right?"
At this question, Soi Fon's eyes lit up, as though he'd hit upon her deepest passion. She immediately became animated, her previously reserved demeanor transformed into an eager excitement. She began talking ceaselessly about Yoruichi's prowess, beauty, and nobility, oblivious to the treatment that Makoto was still conducting.
All the while, Makoto continued in a gentle tone, maintaining his focus on Soi Fon's treatment without pause. 'Seeds of the Forest' were subtly planted, taking root and beginning to grow steadily within her.
In that moment, Makoto noticed a slight increase in his spiritual energy accumulation. Though not as dramatic as from engaging with Kenpachi Zaraki, it still far surpassed the "nourishment" he'd obtained from Ikkaku. He found himself offering a genuine smile toward Soi Fon, sincerely wishing she'd rise to the rank of captain soon.
After a while, as Fon's enthusiasm for recounting Yoruichi's virtues left her feeling slightly parched, she paused, finally noticing the warmth radiating through her whole body, a gentle and soothing sensation.
"Miss Fon, the treatment is complete. I'd suggest avoiding intense training or combat for the next few days," Makoto said with a warm smile.
"It's… it's done already?"
Fon blinked, trying to recall the experience. All she could remember was the occasional soft touch of Makoto's hands but not much else. Standing up, she stretched experimentally, feeling an unprecedented sense of well-being.
"Thank you, Doctor Makoto."
For the first time, Soi Fon offered genuine thanks, her wariness softened. This young healer seems so gentle and virtuous. Surely, he couldn't be anything… odd, could he?
Perhaps the strange moans and groans I heard earlier were just… Eleventh Division members being themselves?
I nearly misjudged him…
In her mind, Makoto's image shifted from that of an eccentric to a skillful, gentle healer who also happened to admire Lady Yoruichi.
"No need to thank me, Miss Fon. If you truly want to show gratitude, just take good care of your body. Even Captain Shihoin would worry about such an outstanding subordinate, don't you think?"
Hearing the warmth and genuine care in Makoto's tone, , Soi Fon felt a growing sense of trust toward him.
Just as she was about to leave, she paused, remembering her real purpose. Damn! I got so carried away talking about Lady Yoruichi that I forgot to probe for information on Dr. Makoto…
She hesitated, then turned back, looking a bit uncertain.
"What is it?" Makoto asked gently.
After a moment of consideration, Fon gathered her resolve. "To express my thanks… may I invite you to dinner?"
"Dinner?"
Makoto met her slightly nervous, gazing at her with a faint smile.
Only dinner, huh? Generally, he'd refuse an invitation like this, but he understood that Soi Fon's real intent was likely to gather information on him.
Alright, I'll play along…
Besides, today Risa left early with the medical team, so I don't have to worry about her noticing my break…
After a brief internal debate, he glanced at the darkening sky outside and nodded. "Sure. It's almost time for a shift change anyway."
Makoto tidied up his workspace, and the two of them left the office together, strolling toward the shopping district within the Seireitei, engaged in light-hearted conversation.
