Lian examined his special attack ability value, and as expected, after reaching level 8, the increase was significantly higher.
Previously, it had risen by 23 points, but this time it jumped to 26 points, directly boosting his special attack to 251.
This indicated that Combat Points could surpass the base stat limitations, and moreover, it seemed exclusive to Lian. Once Treecko's speed reached its maximum limit, there was no further way to enhance it.
With over four hundred Combat Points available, Lian wasn't sure how much more he could increase his special attack, knowing that the cost would escalate as he progressed.
He then began clicking on the plus sign.
252... 253... 254...
Suddenly, Lian stopped. When he increased his special attack to 254, it consumed 60 Combat Points.
A sudden urge to curse arose within him. Although he anticipated the increasing consumption of Combat Points, realizing that just one point of special attack now cost sixty points - double the previous amount - fueled his desire to beat up the system itself.
Now, he had only 397 Combat Points remaining. If each increase continued to cost sixty points, it seemed he could only boost his special attack by six more levels.
What's the point of just six extra levels?
With each level-up, his special attack directly increased by 26 points. Yet, using nearly four hundred Combat Points to enhance his special attack yielded less than one-quarter of that gain.
Lian understood this discrepancy arose because his base stats had improved, making the benefits from leveling up even greater. In other words, as he progressed further, he would become increasingly formidable.
However, Lian wanted to be exceptionally strong right from the start!
He may have already reached the maximum potential for special attack, but his current level was insufficient. To put it simply, although his potential was immensely powerful, he needed to develop and grow stronger first.
To forcefully increase his special attack, the required consumption of Combat Points would likely become progressively more daunting. Currently, it cost sixty points, but next might leap to one hundred twenty, followed by two hundred forty, and so on.
Just contemplating this trajectory filled Lian with despair.
Battling relentlessly is exhausting!
Initially, having over four hundred Combat Points felt substantial, but now Lian couldn't help but feel it was pitifully inadequate.
With a sense of determination, Lian tapped six times, increasing his special attack to 260 points. Although it was a small increment, he focused on future growth rather than immediate gains.
Now with only 37 Combat Points remaining, Lian decided to explore further improvements and noticed Treecko's moveset had a dimly lit Mega Drain ability.
Treecko had already reached Level 10, two levels higher than Lian. This was due to its daily combat training, allowing it to progress much faster than him.
Since there were only around thirty Combat Points left, Lian opted to unlock Treecko's Mega Drain move, enhancing its capabilities.
Unlocking Mega Drain consumed another ten Combat Points, leaving Lian with just 27 points remaining.
Satisfied, Lian reviewed the data panel. Although his special attack increase was modest, from now on, he wouldn't be fighting alone. By nurturing Treecko, he could ensure a continuous supply of Combat Points.
***
Early morning, before the sun had risen.
Treecko woke up from its slumber and, as it attempted to stand, suddenly felt a change within its body.
Confused, Treecko looked down at itself, then gently hopped around, noticing a newfound lightness.
With a swift leap, Treecko darted astonishingly fast, instantly covering a significant distance.
Excited cries erupted from Treecko; its speed had significantly increased, by a remarkable margin.
Thud.
Suddenly, due to its excessive speed, Treecko crashed into a window. Fortunately, hotel windows were sturdy and did not shatter upon impact.
The crisp sound startled Kalia awake, her eyes opening just in time to witness Treecko's energetic display.
"Why is Treecko so lively all of a sudden?" Kalia wondered, puzzled. Although Treecko was usually feisty, it typically remained calm and composed after waking up. Today, however, it exhibited unexpected exuberance, appearing highly excited.
After getting out of bed, Kalia approached closer and noticed the changes in Treecko. Having spent considerable time together, skilled Trainers are keenly sensitive to their Pokemon's transformations.
"Wow, its speed is incredible!" After observing for a moment, Kalia was astonished by Treecko's significantly increased agility.
The sudden transformation puzzled her; it seemed likely that Treecko itself also sensed these changes, leading to its heightened excitement.
"It's unfortunate Cianwood City doesn't have specialized equipment to test Pokemon potential. Otherwise, I could assess Treecko's capabilities," Kalia murmured to herself.
Each Pokemon has unique potential, and with advancements in technology, the Pokemon League developed instruments long ago to measure this potential.
However, only some advanced cities in the Sebas region, like Rhine City, possess such equipment, while Cianwood City does not.
After its initial excitement, Treecko gradually calmed down. Kalia scrutinized Treecko closely but couldn't discern much change. A Pokemon's potential typically unfolds as they grow, making Treecko's abrupt significant enhancement quite rare.
Nevertheless, these changes were undoubtedly positive. Now, once Treecko learns Mega Drain, she would be ready to challenge the Kana City Gym immediately.
As usual, Lian was gently shaken awake by Kalia holding his tail, and after so many days, he had grown accustomed to it.
Immediately upon waking up, he noticed Treecko's transformation.
Fifteen minutes later, they entered Kana Forest.
Within the forest, Treecko showcased its exceptional speed even more, darting swiftly between trees.
Lian wasn't surprised; he had spent over 400 Combat Points to maximize Treecko's speed ability to its limit.
This meant that, based on normal growth rates, Kalia's Treecko now possessed the fastest speed among all Treeckos of the same level.
Lian's training objectives remained unchanged: practicing Ember, occasionally slacking off, finding wild Pokemon for battles to gain practical experience, and utilizing daily combat rating opportunities.
Perhaps Treecko's improvement lifted Kalia's mood, as she didn't get upset even when Lian took breaks.
Lian found this favorable - lounging around, taking naps, and basking in the sun while Kalia focused solely on training Treecko, leaving him undisturbed.
"Treecko, use Absorb."
In the forest, Kalia directed Treecko to employ its Absorb move. Over the past few days, she sensed that Treecko was close to mastering Mega Drain, so she intensified its training regimen.
With Treecko's current speed and her guidance, most wild Pokémon couldn't even touch it. Using Absorb from a distance, despite causing minimal damage, provided excellent training effects.
Upon receiving the command, Treecko typically cast Absorb towards a distant Tangela. However, in the next moment, a massive suction force emanated from Treecko, draining substantial energy from the Grass-type Tangela.
The glowing energy formed a beam, continuously absorbed by Treecko, replenishing its stamina.
As Treecko felt its stamina recovering, it didn't notice anything unusual, assuming it was just like before. But Kalia, observing closely, recognized this wasn't ordinary Absorb but rather Mega Drain.
It's important to note that Grass-types have some resistance against Grass-type moves, making Absorb minimally effective on Tangela. Only Mega Drain could absorb such significant energy.
"Has it mastered it?" Kalia was ecstatic; Treecko consistently amazed her.
To confirm, Kalia ordered Treecko to use both Mega Drain and Absorb again.
As expected, there was a noticeable difference between Mega Drain and Absorb, solidifying her belief that Treecko had indeed learned Mega Drain.
"Wonderful! Now we're ready to challenge the gym." Kalia remained excited; without Treecko mastering Mega Drain, challenging the Ground-type gym would have been quite challenging.
However, with the understanding of Mega Drain, all they needed now was some practice for Treecko to fully master it before heading towards the gym.
Honestly, even Kalia didn't anticipate being able to challenge the first gym within just about a week.
