My hand tightened around the cool, smooth surface of the Pokéball.
I stood on the makeshift battleground, the lines on the ground faded but still there, ghosts of battles long past.
With a flick of my wrist, the ball snapped open, and the red light poured out, materializing into the small orange frame of Charmander.
He blinked up at me, his bright blue eyes taking me in for the first time.
His tail flame flickered, casting a faint glow on the ground.
He toddled forward, stumbling slightly, then wrapped his small arms around my legs.
My first instinct was to pull back, but the warmth—both literal and metaphorical—made me pause.
I knelt down, eye level with him.
"First time meeting me, and you already like me?" I said.
He nodded, the flame on his tail giving a quick flick as if to agree.
A half-smile tugged at my lips as I ruffled the smooth scales on his head. "Alright then, let's see what you've got."
Charmander pulled back, standing upright, his flame casting a long shadow in the sun.
His small claws flexed, ready.
"Growl," I ordered, stepping back.
He let out a low, rumbling growl—not intimidating, but not bad for his size.
It echoed off the walls behind me.
I nodded, eyes narrowing in approval.
"Now, scratch."
Without hesitation, he lunged forward, claws swiping at the air, leaving faint trails in the dust.
His balance was off, but his enthusiasm was there.
I could work with this.
I tossed my bag down on the cracked ground and pulled out the guidebook, flipping through the pages.
I opened right to the section I needed.
"Let's see," I muttered under my breath, eyes scanning the fine print. "If I want to teach you Ember... nine days, five hours each day."
I looked over at Charmander as he circled me, his claws kicking up little puffs of dust.
Nine days of that? Seemed doable, but maybe there was something faster.
I wasn't exactly known for my patience.
"We could stretch it out… change the routine… but that'll just drag it longer. Depends on us," I muttered again, rubbing the back of my neck.
The heat was getting to me, making it hard to focus.
I flipped through more pages, my eyes catching something that stood out—Mega Punch.
I let out a low whistle. "One day to teach, huh? But you'd be out cold after."
The thought of Charmander throwing a punch that could shatter rocks made my blood pump faster.
A one-day skill sounded good, but leaving him exhausted, unable to fight? That could be dangerous.
I leaned back, sprawled out on the ground, and started reading through everything the book had on Mega Punch.
The techniques, the stances, the timing.
The more I read, the more it sounded like the right move.
Charmander had the potential; I could see it in his eyes, in the way he moved, even if it was a little clumsy.
I didn't even notice when I'd drifted off.
One minute, I was running through training routines in my head, the next, Charmander was poking me with his claw, his small face inches from mine.
His flame flickered close, warm but not burning.
I blinked, sitting up quickly, wiping the drool from my chin.
The sun was lower now, casting long shadows across the battleground.
"Alright," I grunted.
I stood up and dusted off my pants, stretching out the stiffness in my legs. "Let's teach you Mega Punch."
Charmander's eyes lit up, the flame on his tail flaring for a moment.
He nodded, determined.
