To celebrate Jennifer's promotion, Kara and Dani hosted a small celebratory dinner at Kara's apartment.
The three women had grown up in the same small town, so they didn't have many friends nearby. If anything, Dani was the only one currently in a relationship, but she wisely chose not to bring her boyfriend along. This was meant to be a celebration just for the three of them, and bringing an outsider into their tight-knit circle could have made things awkward.
As the night wore on, the party became a carefree gathering. By the next morning, Kara found herself acting as the group's designated driver. She first dropped Dani off at her place, then managed to drag a hungover Jennifer—headache and all—back to her apartment to retrieve the official letter confirming her transfer.
Jennifer's appointment to Gotham City had been finalized, and in three days, she would begin her new role. The transfer wasn't unexpected—Gotham City had recently gone through significant upheaval. With Carmine Falcone imprisoned in Arkham Asylum, the city's criminal underworld had fractured into over a dozen smaller gangs vying for dominance.
Jennifer's reputation as a prosecutor known for her integrity and relentless pursuit of justice made her the perfect candidate for such a turbulent environment. She was determined to seize the opportunity and bring stability to Gotham.
On the third day, Kara decided to drive Jennifer to Gotham herself.
Halfway through their trip, Kara's phone rang. It was Perry White, her editor at The Daily Planet, and he sounded particularly irate. "Kara, where are you? Why haven't you shown up for work yet?"
This was her fourth day back in Metropolis, but instead of returning to work immediately, she had been preoccupied helping Jennifer prepare for her move.
Jennifer, sitting in the passenger seat, winced as Perry's voice carried through the phone's speaker. She shot Kara a concerned look, but Kara merely shrugged it off, holding the phone to her ear with one hand while steering with the other.
"I've been helping Jennifer move," Kara explained casually, unfazed by Perry's frustration.
"Helping her move?" Perry nearly exploded. "You can't just abandon your job like this! Do you have any idea how—"
"Relax, Perry," Kara interrupted smoothly. "I'll make it up to you. How about I score an interview with Bruce Wayne? Or better yet, get you an exclusive photo of Batman?"
Perry hesitated, then sighed in resignation. He knew Kara's work was invaluable to the Planet. Her columns were among the most popular in the publication, and she had a knack for uncovering stories that no one else could. "Fine. But don't make a habit of this, Kara."
Kara grinned as she hung up, turning to Jennifer with a playful smirk. "See? No problem at all."
Jennifer couldn't help but laugh. "You've got Perry wrapped around your finger. He still looks out for you like an older brother. Or…" She trailed off, wiggling her eyebrows suggestively.
"Don't even start," Kara shot back, rolling her eyes. "Perry's like family. Besides, he's not exactly my type."
Jennifer chuckled but let the matter drop. They continued their journey, arriving in Gotham City later that evening.
Kara had already helped Jennifer find a safe and secure apartment in advance—a necessity given Gotham's crime rate. Though the rent was steep, Jennifer's new salary as a prosecutor was more than enough to cover it. In fact, her current earnings had made her quite comfortable, especially by Gotham's standards.
Later that night, Kara made a call to an old friend: Bruce Wayne. She asked him to host a small dinner to welcome Jennifer to the city. Bruce agreed without hesitation, but what amused Kara was Jennifer's reaction when she found out.
"Wait," Jennifer said, wide-eyed. "Bruce Wayne? As in, the Bruce Wayne? You know him personally?"
"Of course," Kara replied nonchalantly. "We go way back."
Jennifer seemed torn between excitement and nervousness, especially when she realized Bruce had no memory of them attending the same college. Still, when Bruce arrived at the restaurant that evening, Jennifer made sure to dress impeccably.
While Kara opted for her usual casual attire—button-up shirt, pants, sneakers, and a simple ponytail—Jennifer had gone all out. She wore a stunning blue dress paired with elegant heels, minimal but tasteful jewelry, and light makeup that enhanced her natural beauty.
Bruce, ever the gentleman, greeted them warmly, though Kara noticed his gaze lingered on Jennifer a moment longer than usual.
The dinner was pleasant, with Bruce graciously offering Jennifer advice about navigating Gotham's complexities. By the end of the night, Jennifer felt more confident about her new role, though she couldn't shake the feeling that Kara's presence made everything seem less daunting.
As the evening wrapped up, Kara couldn't help but tease Jennifer. "See? Gotham's not so bad. You'll fit right in."
Jennifer smiled, feeling a newfound sense of determination. Gotham City awaited, and she was ready to make her mark.
