Spector adjusted his glasses, the unsettling grin still etched across his face. "You may address me as Spector," he declared, his eyes gleaming with a sinister spark.
Despite his childlike appearance, something in his aura hinted at a hidden, dangerous power.
He swept his gaze across the new arrivals—Viktor, Lucas, Ryan, Nyx, and the rest of the group that had followed them into the Tower.
"As for your objectives, they are quite simple," he announced, his voice echoing ominously through the vast lobby. "Read."
The single word struck like a physical blow, and an oppressive weight settled on the shoulders of everyone present.
Only Nyx seemed unaffected, standing stoic and unfazed.
"You are to select a book and complete the story," Spector continued, addressing them all. "A maximum of two people may enter each story at a time. What you gain within the narrative world is yours to keep, but rewards will not be granted until the story is finished."
He let the implication hang in the air, adding, "Fail, and you will lose much more than you bargained for."
Spector paused, tilting his head slightly. "I do believe that covers everything," he said with a faux sigh of weariness. "Any questions?" His gaze roamed the group, challenging them.
Nyx raised his hand, his movements calm and deliberate. In an instant, Spector was standing inches from Nyx, his eyes void of warmth as he leaned in.
"And what would your question be?" he asked, his voice dropping to a whisper, laced with an eerie curiosity.
Nyx remained composed, unfazed by Spector's unnerving proximity. "Does time spent inside the story worlds pass the same as in reality?" he inquired smoothly.
Spector straightened, his grin widening. "Ah, my apologies for neglecting that detail," he said, pulling back.
"Time flows differently within the stories. Each day spent there is but a single minute in the real world."
He spread his arms with a mock flourish. "Anything else?"
Nyx shook his head. "That will be all."
Spector nodded, stepping back into his original spot with an unnervingly fluid movement.
Nyx turned to rejoin his group, who had watched the interaction tensely.
"That guy gives me the creeps," Lucas whispered, shivering slightly.
Ryan clenched his fist, his jaw set. "Yeah, I get what you mean, Boss," he replied.
Viktor's expression hardened. "Stronger," he muttered to himself, his frustration and determination boiling just beneath the surface.
Nyx's gaze was merciless as he looked at them. "I don't need weak subordinates," he said coldly. "If you can't become stronger, you're better off dead."
Viktor's grip on his own fist tightened. He remembered the fear that had gripped him in the face of those monstrous orcs, the way his dagger had trembled in his hands. I couldn't even hold my weapon steady, he thought bitterly. I have to get stronger.
Lucas, despite his fear, felt a new rush of adrenaline. The stronger I get, the more fun things to do, he thought, his spirit igniting with reckless excitement.
Ryan's mind wandered to the past, hearing a child's voice call, "Big Brother!" Memories he had tried to suppress resurfaced, but he forced them back down. I don't care anymore, he told himself. I'll survive this rotten world.
"I'll get stronger," Ryan vowed quietly, "so I never feel that weakness again."
"I'll get stronger," Viktor echoed, his voice steady with resolve, "For Revenge"
"And I'll get stronger," Lucas added, a small grin forming, "So I can do what I want"
"Good" Nyx said while turning his back to the three, with a slight grin that scratched his usual cold face
