Colombia, Medellín, Antioquia.

July is the month when summer has fully arrived in the north. Under the scorching sun, cicadas are chirping, and the heat is rising.

Javier was seated in the large living room. On the small table in front of him was a plate of peanuts and a cup of coffee, a local specialty of Medellín.

He watched the TV series, picked up a peanut with chopsticks, took a sip from the wine glass, and let out a comfortable sigh.

Over the past year, Javier's life had been particularly comfortable.

Last year, their son became the head coach of the Butler University Bulldogs in the United States, earning hundreds of thousands of dollars a year! Javier and Maria were overjoyed, and if Liam hadn't repeatedly told them to keep a low profile, they would have spread the news among their relatives and friends.

When they discussed it later, they realized that this was wise. Some people can't stand seeing others do better than them, especially those who come from similar backgrounds. Success often attracts jealousy.

But their lives had changed dramatically.

Although Javier initially disagreed with his son's suggestion to buy a house, he promised Liam he wouldn't sell vegetables anymore. Now, he was living a retired life at the age of 50, playing chess and cards daily.

As he watched TV, Maria brought a plate of spicy potato shreds and a bowl of fried meat. They started to eat lunch together.

Javier was eating and drinking, and after half a glass of wine, he noticed that Maria, sitting at the far end of the sofa, wasn't eating either. Every now and then, she'd pick up her phone, looking restless.

"Maria, what's wrong?" Javier asked, puzzled.

Maria glanced at her phone again, looking concerned.

"Javier, why hasn't Liam called today? He's two hours late."

It was Saturday. Liam usually called them every Saturday at 10 a.m.

The time difference between Indiana and Medellín is 1 hour.

But today, Liam was two hours late, which made Maria worried.

Could something have happened to her son?

In the past, Liam had been late or didn't call because his team had a game. But now, the season was over, and there shouldn't be any problems.

"Maybe he's just busy. Don't worry about it. Liam's grown up," Javier said dismissively.

"You should never turn off your phone in case of emergencies…" Maria's face remained filled with concern.

Knock, knock!

As they were talking, there was a knock at the door.

Javier stood up slightly, pretending to open it. Maria rolled her eyes at him.

"Stop pretending! Go back to drinking your wine," she said with disdain.

Javier smiled and sat down again, while Maria went to answer the door.

"Who 's there?"

When Maria opened the door, she froze for a moment. Standing in front of her was Liam, who hadn't been home in a year.

He was wearing a T-shirt and shorts, with a suitcase beside him. His clothes were soaked with sweat, and he looked exhausted.

"Mom, I'm back!" Liam said with a broad grin.

Maria's face lit up with surprise. She grabbed his hand and looked him over carefully.

"Why didn't you call to let me know you were coming? I was worried! Liam, you've lost weight."

When Javier heard Liam's voice, he rushed over.

"Let the boy in! Why are you blocking the door?"

"Your father and I just had lunch. Are you hungry? I heard airplane food isn't very good," Maria said as she hurriedly pulled Liam inside.

"You've never been on a plane, Mom. How would you know if the food is good?" Javier muttered as he closed the door.

"I just made your favorite fried meat yesterday. Sit down, and I'll heat it up for you," Maria said as she hurried into the kitchen.

Javier smiled proudly, knowing that Maria wouldn't have time to scold him now that Liam was home.

Liam put down his suitcase, took off his T-shirt, revealing his muscular upper body, and sat down. Javier quickly turned the fan up to full speed.

Maria brought out a plate of fried meat and set it on the table.

"You didn't tell me you were coming home. I didn't even prepare your room," Maria said.

"It's fine, Mom. I'll clean it myself later," Liam replied, still smiling.

After over a year, he was finally with his parents again.

A few days ago, Butler University went on break, so Liam left his apartment and flew back to Colombia. Today, he finally made it home after traveling through Bogotá and taking a bus.

Despite the long journey, being home made him realize something: people only cherish things when they're gone.

Life without tinto (coffeeColombian) is truly tough...
