บท 84: Chapter 84: 【Danger】 and 【Danger】

"Professor?" Wade was somewhat surprised.

"Some people's dangers aren't apparent on the surface." Professor Murray clasped his fingers together, looked at Wade and asked, "How much do you know about curses and contracts?"

Wade thought for a moment and replied:

"I've read about Unbreakable Vows and the Fidelius Charm in books. I've also studied a bit about the magic contract you set up between me and Mr. Marchionne last time, but I haven't systematically studied this area yet."

His time studying magic had been quite short, and there was so much to learn. Knowing that the future would grow more chaotic and dangerous year by year, Wade had always focused on improving his own survival chances.

He no longer placed his hopes for safety on anyone else and urgently wished to gain the ability to handle any crisis on his own.

Professor Murray nodded and did not seem disappointed by his response.

—Or rather, discovering that there were still things Wade didn't know gave him a slight sense of accomplishment as a professor.

Professor Murray said:

"The Unbreakable Vow is an extremely powerful oath. Breaking it results in death, so it's only used in extreme circumstances. It's similar to a blood pact, a vow that even those willing to keep their promises would rarely make. But let's leave that aside for now."

—A blood pact?

Wade's heart stirred slightly.

"The Fidelius Charm is highly complex and powerful. It's a spell used for secrecy, but the choice of the Secret-Keeper is critical — if the Secret-Keeper betrays, the charm becomes useless; if the Secret-Keeper dies, everyone who knew the secret becomes the new Secret-Keepers. This spell essentially places all your trust in one person—"

Professor Murray paused and said, "Harry Potter's parents died because of the wrong Secret-Keeper."

Wade knew this, but still asked, "That person was—?"

"Sirius Black."

Professor Murray slowly uttered the name with a tone of disgust, then continued:

"He used to be the best of friends with James Potter, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew. But he betrayed them, leading to the deaths of two of them, and ended up in Azkaban himself.

The only one still out there is Remus Lupin, though I haven't heard anything about him in many years..."

Wade slowly nodded, "Are you worried that he's a hidden dark wizard who might pose a threat to me?"

"Not only that, he's also..."

—A werewolf.

Professor Murray hesitated for a moment and swallowed the word.

It wasn't unusual for a few Death Eaters to emerge among the students—after all, almost every wizard in Britain had attended Hogwarts, so there were all kinds of people.

But if it became known that Dumbledore had allowed a werewolf into the school to live alongside other children for seven years, even wizards who supported him might think he had lost his mind.

Still, if Wade didn't know about this, he could be at risk.

Professor Murray considered for a moment, then cautiously added, "He's also someone you shouldn't approach on a full moon—you're a smart boy, I'm sure you understand what I mean."

Wade nodded and said directly, "In Professor Quirrell's Defense Against the Dark Arts class a couple of days ago, he talked about various treatments for being bitten by a werewolf. And I have also learned some of them."

"Knowing that, do you still want to make him your agent?" Professor Murray asked. "You realize that means he will always pose some uncontrollable risk—if you need, I can introduce you to some reliable and safe alternatives."

For a moment, Wade was indeed tempted, because he knew that if Professor Murray was offering, it meant he would personally ensure the reliability of whoever he recommended.

But after hesitating for a moment, Wade said:

"I truly appreciate it, Professor. However, I've already promised him this opportunity… to me, that's a commitment. Unless his character proves unworthy, I don't want to break my word lightly."

Professor Murray felt a faint sense of concern but wasn't surprised.

"In that case," he said, summoning a few books with a wave of his hand, "let's pause the alchemy lesson today and talk about magic contracts—this is the most common way for unfamiliar wizards to build trust."

...

Time flowed smoothly and quietly, and in the blink of an eye, it was already Saturday.

It wasn't a Hogsmeade weekend, so most students were still sleeping in their dormitories. Early in the morning, Wade was already dressed and had wrapped a blue-green scarf around his neck before heading to the Great Hall.

It is extremely rare that Professor Murray was also present at the teachers' table having breakfast. This surprised Professor McGonagall, who glanced at him several times before cautiously greeting him, as if to confirm that Professor Murray wasn't an imposter.

"Don't be so strange, Minerva."

Professor Murray smiled and nodded at Wade, then said to Professor McGonagall, "I occasionally want to experience the lively atmosphere that the children bring."

Wade bowed slightly to Professor Murray, sat down at the long table, and soon noticed that the plate in front of him was filled with his favorite food, along with some familiar-looking candies on the side.

He picked up a candy and tasted it first. It was sweet but not overwhelming, just like the ones his mother sent him.

It seems the house-elves' culinary experiments had been quite successful.

After breakfast, Wade headed outside the castle gates. He hadn't been waiting long when Professor Murray emerged, smiling as he said:

"The food at the Hogwarts kitchen has gotten more diverse, and it tastes great. I haven't been here in a while—looks like I missed a lot of interesting changes."

Wade smiled and casually replied, "There must be some house-elves who don't just work to get the job done, but genuinely dedicate themselves to studying the culinary arts, right?"

"Interesting thought—very interesting—" Professor Murray glanced at Wade and said, "Most people would assume some wizard gave them better recipes, rather than believing house-elves would independently study cooking."

"Why is that?" Wade asked, puzzled. "They have intelligence, they have emotions. Isn't it normal for them to have personal hobbies and work hard to excel in them?"

Hearing this, Professor Murray was momentarily stunned, then burst into laughter.

"Wade, oh Wade… you know a lot, but after all, you grew up in the Muggle world… there are some things that others consider common sense, but you have no knowledge of—and that's perfectly normal, absolutely normal—"

He affectionately patted Wade's head, looking at him as though he were a child just learning to speak.

"House-elves don't have a sense of self, Wade," Professor Murray said with a smile. "Or rather—house-elves who develop a sense of self are extremely dangerous to wizards… you should remember that, child."
