บท 10: May I Ask the Doctor’s Age

"What does that mean?" Amelia asked. As an art student who had never passed physics, she tried to listen attentively but couldn't understand.

"There's a theory that in a four-dimensional space, there are several identical worlds existing parallel to each other on the time axis. If for some reason, two or more parallel worlds collide, it could cause people from World A to end up in World B or C. This is known as a time-space shift," Sophia explained.

"That's so profound," Amelia said, looking puzzled.

"In simpler terms, it means that the people who existed in our world didn't disappear but might have moved to another parallel world," Sophia said. "Of course, it's also possible that only a few of us have ended up here, while the others are still in the original world."

"Is there a way to return to our original world?" Amelia asked.

"It's possible! If we find the coordinates of the previous parallel universe and have the right transportation, we can go back," Sophia replied.

"Could others break into our world?" Ethan asked, raising his most pressing concern.

"It's possible, using the same principle," Sophia said, analyzing the situation like a scientific report.

"Does that mean our world could be invaded at any time?" Ethan asked again.

Their world wasn't severely damaged, but with few people and poor defense capabilities, a strong mercenary team could easily take over. Ethan couldn't allow others to become the rulers of his world.

"Correct. Although the probability is low, it's still a possibility," Sophia replied.

"Where did these zombies come from?" Ethan continued.

"My specialty is in energy bodies. From my perspective, if humans are affected by certain energy, it could cause their bodies to mutate, potentially turning them into zombies. Although they're still alive, their brains are out of control, like lower animals," Sophia explained.

"Can zombies mutate or evolve?" Ethan asked.

"Of course. Every organism is constantly evolving, albeit at different speeds. These beings, mutated by special energy, might evolve rapidly into higher-level zombies," Sophia said seriously. "I need to conduct further research to provide you with accurate answers."

Whenever Sophia discussed her field, she was exceptionally confident and composed, contrasting with her usual delicate demeanor.

"Oh, I see," Ethan said. He decided to quickly catch up on related knowledge at the library. Without a common language, how could he win over someone like Sophia?

Fortunately, he had eyes like a scanner and a brain like a database, making learning as easy as drinking water. If he wanted, he could become the greatest scholar overnight.

"Hahaha…" Thinking of this, Ethan couldn't help but laugh.

As he laughed, he suddenly realized the room had fallen silent. Glancing around, he saw the two women looking at him coldly.

To shift the topic and ease the awkwardness, Ethan asked, "By the way, Dr. Sophia…"

"Don't call me Dr. Sophia; it sounds too formal. Just call me Sophia," Sophia said warmly.

Hearing this, Ethan and Amelia were both taken aback.

Judging by her appearance, Sophia seemed the youngest of the three. With her doll-like face and smooth, fair skin, she could easily be mistaken for eighteen.

"Sophia, I have a question that might be a bit impolite," Ethan said hesitantly.

"Go ahead," Sophia replied.

After a pause, Ethan asked the question that had been on his mind and on the minds of men everywhere:

"May I ask, Sophia, how old are you?"

"Thirty-seven!"

"What?" Ethan and Amelia exclaimed in unison.

Although the number wasn't exceptionally large, it came as a huge shock to both Ethan and Amelia.

They couldn't believe that Sophia was nearly forty. But in the face of such beauty, age was just a number. Ethan paused, then asked a question that everyone who admired Sophia would want to ask:

"Sophia, are you... married?"

"No, I started working at the Ability Research Institute when I was very young and rarely interacted with men," Sophia said. "And for some reason, I've always had an innate fear and aversion to men."

Hearing this, Ethan felt a chill run through his heart. He hadn't expected that out of the last two women left in the world, one was afraid of pain and the other had androphobia.

But for the sake of humanity's continuation and development, even the toughest challenges had to be overcome. He had to strive and cross this mountain to let the spark of life spread.

"However, when Ethan carried me out of the research institute earlier, I suddenly felt that men might not be so scary. Being on his back gave me a sense of security," Sophia said, then started eating her noodles again, "These noodles are really good."

At this moment, Ethan felt a slight comfort.

This showed that there were no insurmountable obstacles, only legs not long enough. He thought he should use this warm opportunity to learn more about Sophia, to better ensure the continuation of humanity:

"Sophia, what's in those crates you asked me to move?"

Sophia put down her chopsticks, her expression turning serious. She looked at Ethan, hesitated, and then said:

"They contain top-level secrets!"

"This project, I've been working on it for nearly ten years. Originally, today was supposed to be the day for the next phase of the experiment, which might have led to new breakthroughs," Sophia said, her words tinged with regret.

"But now, in this apocalypse, those secrets are no longer secrets. There's no harm in telling you."

Sophia's words piqued Amelia's curiosity as well. She wondered what could have been important enough for such a genius doctor to spend ten years researching.

"Ten years of hard work down the drain," Sophia sighed again. Without a strong team, she couldn't continue this massive project alone.

"Sophia, what exactly is it?" Ethan couldn't help but ask.

"They contain a special type of energy," Sophia explained. "Everything, whether human or other substances, is essentially a form of energy, emitting various waves. For instance, the feeling of love at first sight occurs because people emit waves at similar frequencies or multiples."

"Oh, I see," Ethan nodded slightly and glanced at Amelia.

Amelia rolled her eyes at him and said, "Pay attention!"

"Ten years ago, we discovered an ancient organism in the depths of the ocean. These creatures lived in colonies, with one leader and all the others as its subordinates," Sophia explained.
