บท 2: HARLEY: Flash Marriage

"Dad, let go of me."

I glared at my father, who wouldn't let go of my wrist as he dragged me down the hall toward a brown double door. "Dad, let go! I'm not marrying that man, and—"

"You will!"

Amadeo yelled at me, his shoulders rising and falling in raging breathing. "That stupid boy you're seeing, I have paid him off, and you will never see him again! Now listen to me." He snatched me roughly by the chin, my cheeks puffing out on either side. "We and the Jones have made a deal, a company partnership, and this marriage will be sealing it once it's over, do you understand?"

"I'll ruin this wedding!"

"Harley!!"

"Why me? Why does it have to be me? What about my sisters?"

"What makes you think I would use my daughters?"

"I'm your daughter too!"

"You are a bastard's child. I don't know how many times you need me to spell it out for you. I. Am. Not. Your. Father, and I will never be." His eyes held hostility as if he couldn't stand looking at me. What have I ever even done wrong to him? "Take this marriage as a way of paying me back for looking after you since you were a baby and raising you to be the woman you are today. How about that?"

My chest tightened with a kind of deep aching pain, and I searched his face thoroughly, hoping for a scrap of kindness in them, but there was none. "Why are you so cruel to me?"

"Cruel?" He laughed. "Girl, if I were cruel to you, you would know. I would have let you die after your whore of a mother ran, but I didn't, did I?"

"Listen." He smiled at me, unamused. "If you don't do this, I will make you miserable. I will take everything from you and I mean…everything. Don't forget your twin brother is stuck in the hospital fighting for his life, and who pays his bills? I do. So you better behave because if you don't, I will make you pay a price high enough to equal the loss of this contract. Now tell me, will you go in there and behave yourself?"

I drew in a deep breath to soothe the ache in my chest. "You're willing to go that far, Dad?"

"Believe me. I will do much worse. I cannot loose that contract." His tone was sinister.

I stared at him for what seemed like forever, completely at a loss for words, before frantically nodding my head with a light smile. "Okay." And without objecting, I let him drag me into the now open door, the interior of the church coming into view.

There weren't many people inside, just simply bodyguards, and at the altar, a priest and a man I'd only met once in my life—someone I disliked from the very first day I laid eyes on him.

My hands clenched beside me, and I could feel their watchful gazes, probably having to do with how rough I looked.

Once I was forced onto the altar to stand opposite him, Sylus Jones, the first son of the Jones family, my face darkened a fraction. I could see the judgment in his gaze as he ran his eyes over my appearance. Unlike me, he was perfect. His thick jet black hair was left in a neat low man bun, not a speck of dust on his three-piece suit.

"What is this?" He looked at my father.

My father tried forcing a smile. "Please forgive the whole thing, Mr. Jones. We had a rough time coming here."

Sylus looked back at me and waved a finger to the priest.

"Do you, Mr. Jones, take Harley Legan to be your lawfully wedded wife?"

"I do."

"And do you, Miss Harley Legan, take Mr. Sylus Jones to be your lawfully wedded husband?"

I stared at my father, hatred burning deep within my soul. A bastard's child or not, that shouldn't make me so dispensable he didn't even think twice about selling me off to this man and with a threat to back it up. But I wasn't going to make it easy for him either!

"Um…?" The priest looked between the two of us, confused and nervous by the heavy tension. "Miss. Harley?"

If they thought I was going to agree so easily, then they were in for a disappointment, especially my father. There was no way I would willingly step into a life I didn't want. And since I had no choice, it wouldn't hurt to make a little mess out of it.

A small smile crossed my face.

"I. Don't," and I emphasized those words, wanting to etch them into Sylus's brain, not once breaking eye contact with him.

"What?" His voice, smoky and deep like a cold night, thrummed through my ears, and I watched his eyes narrow dangerously, my stupid body involuntarily taking a step back. But I still wasn't going to give him what he wanted.

Not so easily!

"Do not test me."

"Or what?"

He frowned. What was that expression? I couldn't read him at all. It was as if he had a stone wall replace every emotion he had to give.

But his sharp green eyes looked right through me as if I were an open book. Dammit! They challenged me as if he was waiting for me to mess up, and what that earned from me was a grin, a nervous one.

Hell, he was intimidating.

Sylus Jones was dangerous, so dangerous, he was the spitting image of danger.

A step, another step until we were just an inch apart, and I could feel his oozing body heat. My eyes fought to rise and meet him, his 6'6 figure towering over my 5'6 self, reminding me just how small I was compared to him.

He could crush me if he wanted to, yet no reaction, only his impassive gaze drawing closer and closer, drowning me, until I felt his hand wrap coldly around the back of my neck, forcing me closer. His face was right next to my ear, and I stood there, my lungs burning as I held my breath. In what? Anticipation?

"Say, I do," he whispered.

บท 3: HARLEY: Kidnapped

"I do." My body shuddered.

Sylus's intimidation was a hell of a lot, but something in me enjoyed pushing his button—a man like him who stood at the top of the world, someone who people, including my father, had to think twice before provoking too far.

The priest, though stunned, went ahead to mutter the rest of his lines and announced with a smile, "You are now married."

The signed folders my father and Sylus held were exchanged between them and a full smile emerged on Amadeo's wrinkly face. He reached out for a handshake, but Sylus gave nothing but a glance, ignoring the gesture.

"You'll be called shortly, Mr. Legan. The contract will be finalized in two months, and I hope nothing goes wrong by then," he said to my father behind a warning, a dry smile on his lips. "Your daughter isn't exactly what I'd prefer, but she'll do."

Funny. We'll see how long I'll do, Sylus.

My father smiled at him. "We'll be waiting for your call, Mr. Jones. Hopefully, my daughter won't be giving you too much trouble."

"Hopefully," Sylus pointed out and snapped his fingers. His entire bodyguards within the hall followed immediately, and they exited the church as if I didn't exist.

"You've got to be kidding me." I turned to my father, who was already gazing at me with threats in his eyes. "Mess up, Harley, and I assure you, you won't be able to deal with the consequences. This contract is very important to me, so if you know what's best for you, behave with Mr. Jones. He is not a man you should mess with."

A grin tugged at my lips, and I shrugged. "I'll decide that myself." I stormed past him with my hands balled into fists, stalking after Sylus, who was walking to the matte black Rolls Royce parked outside.

He didn't let me come with him, but instead had me board a different car. As offending as it was, I had no choice but to get into the SUV driven by two of his bodyguards. We sped off into the road, heading straight for his house.

We were ten minutes out of the busy road when the driver suddenly took a turn into another dark route. I frowned, tilting my head in a bit of confusion. Sylus's car didn't take this route, so what was going on?

"Hey, where are we going?" I asked.

Neither of them answered me and I immediately reached for my phone, but I stopped at the feel of a cold metal suddenly pressed against my forehead. "What are you doing?" I raised my eyes to look at the black-haired one, staring at me with warning in his gaze.

"Drop the phone. Now!"

"Are you kidnapping me? Sylus—"

My words were cut short as a sudden bright light flashed, blinding us for a second. Looking up, I only had time to hear the honking of both cars before the loud bang of a gunshot sounded and everything went absolutely blank.

Tires screeched, everything fell into chaos, and the car barrelled off the road, crashing right into a pole. My forehead slammed roughly against the window, cracking it, and I momentarily went deaf as if I'd been submerged underwater.

"Urgh," I grunted, lifting my head to look at the two bodyguards, but I went still, my gaze crossing over their slumped bodies. They were dead, both of them, I think.

Oh god.

I quickly opened the door, ignoring the blood streaming down my face, and got out of the car. Every instinct screamed to run, and I hissed, my head banging in pain. I staggered in the opposite direction to get away and grunted as I smacked into something. I stepped back and looked up into an unfamiliar face.

My breath immediately caught in my throat.

Was he one of them? But he was dressed just like Sylus's bodyguards. The stupid satin suit with a blue undershirt. He definitely wasn't one of them, he didn't seem like it. Did this mean I was safe, or…was he the bad guy?

Vigilance flashed in my eyes.

"Ha! You really are a sharp one, just like my boss said," the man said to me suddenly, grinning before he pulled out a pistol.

"Who's your boss?" I asked.

"Why—"

"James! You jerk!" Someone groaned from the car and we both turned our heads. One of the guards was still alive and he was glaring at the man aiming at me with betrayal in his eyes. "Why…d-did you hit us? Weren't we—" He coughed up spurts of blood, clearly on the brink of death. "We are working together on this. why?"

"You're not needed anymore. I am doing most of the job and I won't be sharing my payment with any of you. so kindly rest in peace now." He turned to me, removing the safety of the pistol. "As for you…"

A car raced towards us and pulled over. "You don't have to know who my boss is. It's none of your business." He gestured to the car with a slight tilt of his head. "Get in the car, Harley."

I swallowed thickly. "You know my name."

His smile fell away. "Get in the fucking car you brat, or I'll shoot you right here and be done with it."

I could run, I could take that gun from him, or better yet, I could beat him if I tried. But my vision was getting too fuzzy. I felt dizzy.

"Move!" he yelled. I didn't even get to obey before I felt something solid slam into the back of my head, and my ears rang so loudly that I screamed in pain.

Darkness closed in on me at a rapid pace. I staggered from one side to another, before I eventually lost it and collapsed into large arms.

Shit.

Was I going to die before even making it to my new husband's house?
