He hoped that by helping this child find the truth, he could at least provide him with some sense of closure. It was time for him to atone.

Their first stop, however, wasn't Everett. Adeline insisted they meet the Duchess first. She said it was essential, though the man didn't fully understand why. Adeline had a plan, and he was in no position to question it.

They reached the Duchess's quarters just before dawn. Inside, the Duchess lay sound asleep, only to be roused by a light but persistent knocking at her door.

She furrowed her eyebrows but didn't get up. Nothing was more important than sleep.

The knocking only became more frequent annoying her. The sound grew louder, more insistent. She groaned, pulling the covers over her head, silently willing the knocker to take a hint and go away
