บท 9: Why are (women) Like That?

All I wanted at that moment was a good pair of wings to get out of there. But instead, I was lying on the ground, bleeding like a tragic hero in a cheap drama. The grotesque birds were circling outside, looking ready to devour us the moment they got the chance.

"Phil, please hang on," Laura said, trying to hide the panic in her voice.

I tried to smile, but it probably looked more like a grimace.

"Exploring an alley in a horror movie scenario is my dream, you know? I just didn't like getting the role of an extra."

Hana was still holding me.

"We're not leaving you here," she said firmly, though her eyes showed how desperate she was.

"Why don't you guys just leave? Just go and find help. I'll hold them off," I lied, trying to sound brave. But the truth was, I was paler than a ghost and felt weaker by the second.

Laura knelt beside me, placing her trembling hand on my leg.

"Phil, you have to try. We need you."

The radio crackled again on speaker.

"Laura, what's the plan?" Will's voice was clearly shaking with fear.

"Will, we're going to try something risky here, okay? You need to stay calm so the others can calm down too. We're going to try to escape from here and come to help you, understand?"

"I understand. But first, let me say something to Phil. Oh, man… You're alone with two women in a place that's surely dark because everything in this city is dark. So, are you going to take your time wooing them?"

"Why don't you shut up, Will?" Laura snapped.

"Huh?" Hana's reaction was simple but funny because her eyebrows shot up so high.

And I just laughed.

The connection cut off, and Laura turned her attention back to Hana and me.

"Okay, here's the plan. We need to get out of here as quickly as possible. We'll use the back of the store and try to lose these creatures."

"But how are we going to run with Phil in this state?" Hana asked, worried.

I knew I couldn't run. My legs were too weak.

"You'll drag me," I said jokingly.

Laura and Hana exchanged glances, then looked back at me.

"We know you're joking, but that's exactly what we're going to do," Laura said.

"What?"

They lifted me with effort, and we began moving slowly toward the back of the store. Every step was torture, but I kept my mouth shut to avoid worrying the girls further. The sound of the birds outside was terrifying, and I expected the glass to shatter at any moment and for them to attack us.

Finally, we reached a door leading to a narrow corridor. Laura opened it cautiously, and we were greeted by a terrible stench. It was a dark and dirty corridor, but it was our only chance.

"How blessed are we to have such a random corridor?"

"Shut up and move," Laura whispered.

We advanced down the corridor, each step a challenge for me. The blood kept flowing, and my vision began to blur. But I couldn't give up. Not now, right?

We reached another door, and Laura opened it carefully. On the other side was a deserted street. No birds in sight. We stepped out onto the street, and I started to feel like we might have a chance. But suddenly, I heard the disturbing sound of wings again. The birds were following us.

"We just need to go a little farther! Let's go!" Laura shouted.

But I couldn't go any further. My legs were too weak, my eyes barely open, and I had no strength left. Letting go of them, I collapsed to the ground, breathing heavily.

"Go. Run, go," I said to them.

"Stop saying that. We're going to get you out of here," Hana insisted, crying. She was trembling but seemed stronger than me.

"I can't, Hana. I have no strength left. You need to get out of here now," I was very pale, dehydrated from the blood loss.

"Laura, say something to make him come with us, please, say something!"

Laura just stared at me. She said nothing, just shook her head in disbelief. Maybe she was disappointed in me? I had no idea because my mind was fogging with the lack of blood.

The piercing sound of the birds grew louder and more frightening.

"What are you waiting for? Go."

"Is that what you want? For Hana and me to leave you here to die, is that it?" Laura asked, her voice filled with anger and fervor as she gestured with her hands.

"Why are women... like this? Go. Go."

With a lot of reluctance and anger, Laura threw a backpack next to me. She grabbed the other backpacks, took Hana's left arm, and they started running together. But she couldn't leave without saying one last thing.

"I'll never forgive myself, Phil. Never," Laura shouted, her voice full of potent rage.

Laura, and do you think I would forgive myself?
