บท 4: Choosing A Starter

"Go Seel!"

"Alright your turn."

In a small room similar to the infirmary he woke up in, me and Caitilin were sitting around a table playing Go Seel. I was currently winning.

"Do you have a Pecha Berry?" I shuffled the cards in my hand around, the boredom of playing the game was setting in.

"You know, I'm starting to think you're the psychic trainer here, guessing all my cards right. Whatever, what does a Pecha Berry do?"

"You're a psychic trainer?" I perked up, though I already learned this fact yesterday. Caitlin was the first elite member of the region I searched up.

"Humph, let me tell you kid," Caitilin jumped from her seat onto it and raised one hand to her chest, the other on her hip.

"I am the strongest Psychic trainer in Unova, one of the strongest in the entire world, you don't understand how privileged you are to be in my presence."

"Caitilin, get off my chair!" Juniper snapped, she was in another room on her pokédex.

"I won't fall, you should know I'm a three time gold medal gymnast"

"Really?" I couldn't help but comment.

"No."

"…"

"A-Anyways, answer the question?" Caitilin looked away, her cheeks puffed out with a ruby tint.

Cute. Despite being 20, I learned Caitlin acted much younger, and I almost let out a laugh.

Though I don't remember my age, with how new memories like my first presidential voting felt, I would guess 18 - 24 years old.

"A Pecha Berry cures a pokemon if they're poisoned. For the berry to work, the pokemon must consume all of it, and…" I proceeded to tell Caitlin what I knew about the item.

It has been two days since I woke up in Juniper Lab, and a few new things occurred.

First… I was handsome as hell.

Alright I was still 10 (in a few days), so a lot of that "handsomeness" was really cuteness, but cracks of handsomeness were appearing. I believe that there was a connection between a person's body and their soul, because my appearance differed from my memory. Max was a 5'1 caucasian boy with chestnut hair and blue eyes. But after taking his body, I appeared older now. Despite turning 10 in a few days, I could pass as a 13 year old. At 5'4, my face is sharper, now adorned with black hair and green eyes.

I also credited my looks to the fact that 10 was around the time a person would look their cutest.

I also started playing games with Caitilin as a form of studying pokemon information. Juniper was especially adamant about broadening my pokémon knowledge.

"Almost all information currently known about pokemon can be found in the pokédex; however, that doesn't mean you can slack on your pokemon knowledge. If in battle, there's no time to search up an opponent's moves during battle, scenarios like these are when a trainer's knowledge is imperative to a battle's outcome."

Despite wanting to broaden my Pokémon knoledge, she hadn't let me meet any pokémon yet. Appparently a fight between two pokémon recently occurred and a Garchomp busted through the pokemon enclosure, leaving them rattled. The two suspects were still unidentified.

Speaking of Juniper, I could hear a little of her pokédex conversation, from the way she spoke, it seemed like a friend.

"You want Atlas to travel with my daughters?" On the other side of the pokédex was Mage, the mother of Rosa and Hilda.

"Mage you should come over with Rosa and Hilda later today. I'm telling you, Atlas is one of the smartest and cutest 10 year olds I've ever met. He'll instantly befriend them."

Over the past two days Juniper was convinced more and more that Atlas was a future pokemon master. Unlike others his age, he soaked in information very fast, and was extremely kind as well.

"Alright, visiting a day ahead would be good for us. We're all anxious for tomorrow." Juniper spoke with Mage for a few more minutes before turning the pokédex off.

I couldn't help but smile at those words.

How come, despite being in the damn Pokémon world of all things, was I able to sit still in Juniper's lab? Why did I stay in this lab and not go out and meet some pokémon.

The reason was I knew my journey would start tomorrow, when I could pick my Pokémon starter.

"Ugghhh…Finally done," I watched Juniper lay down the final boxes of materials in the closet, she wiped the pooling sweat from her forehead.

I couldn't help but take a long look at Juniper's figure. She broke all the stereotypical norms of a scientist with a pretty face, and athletic hourglass figure. She appeared so young, I was shocked when I learned she was in her late 30's.

I took a glance at her large breasts as I sat my boxes down, which fit tightly into her shirt.

I was only human.

After finishing my new chores, I went and took a shower in the bathroom near my room. Because of the large size of the lab, Juniper had multiple spare bedrooms in the building. There was also a large living room for me to lay and use my pokédex. After I sat on the leather adorned couch, I head a voice.

"Atlas…why don't I show you the indoor pokémon enclosure."

I turned to Juniper with an excited expression.

My excitement must have been obvious to Juniper, who gave me a smile and took my hand into hers.

I followed Juniper down a series of halls. The pokémon enclosure was connected to the outer part of the building and it took a few minutes before we arrived at its entrance.

We stepped in, and I was immediately shocked by what I saw.

There were pokémon everywhere.

I saw magikarps, rookidees, and even a charmander.

I wanted to approach them, but before I could take a step Juniper gripped my hand harder, halting my steps.

I looked over to Juniper, who looked back at me.

"I don't want to scare you Atlas, and you seem very mature. Do you know how many people die from pokemon a year?"

I shook my head.

Juniper gave a slight sigh and looked at me with a stern face.

"8% of all yearly deaths occur because of pokemon. That's millions of people, per year."

Juniper took a look around the enclosure, before continuing.

"There's a 3% mortality rate for all new pokemon trainers in there first two years of training. Do you understand what I'm trying to say?"

"That pokémon are dangerous," I gave Juniper a firm nod.

Despite the dangers, nothing would stop me from achieving my dream as a pokemon master.

Seeing the determination in my eyes, Juniper gave a small smile and released her grip on my hand..

"Don't worry, all these pokemon you see are domesticated. They won't hurt you."

As I began moving through the enclosure, I looked at all the different types of pokemon. Similar to me, I noticed how much of an attraction I was for all the pokemon, their eyes following my steps.

However, the pokemon didn't approach me. At least, not at first.

Before I knew it, four pokemon approached and sat in front of me.

One was a small bipedal crocodile with blue skin, its red scales shooting out of its spine

The second was a red and black pig with a red bulb on the end of its tail.

The third was a round bird with two leaves on its chests, mimicking a green tie.

Finally the pokémon that caught my eye the most was a cute rabbit with white and red skin. Its red eyes looked up to me with curiosity and vigor.

The four pokémon were Totodile, Tepig, Rowlet, and Scorbunny.

I noticed they were all starters.

"Ms. Juniper, these pokemon…are they my possible starter choices tomorrow.

In the corner of my eye, I saw Juniper walk up to me from a few dozen meters away.

"Good eye Atlas; however, they are your starter choices for today, not tomorrow."

For the first time since entering this world, I had no words.

"You wouldn't believe the conflict that can arise between trainers who want the same pokemon, so I decided to give you first pick today. There's two fire starters since fire is the most popular."

"Your serious, you mean I can pick my starter now."

"Yes, pick your starter Atlas," Juniper confirmed with a wide smile.

This was one of her favorite parts about being a professor, watching the excitement and passion fall on a child who's realized their adventure would begin.
